Discussion #3

Bresson’s ideas on how compositional elements can come together in a decisive moment mentioned how he studies or observes the composition prior to shooting. The background can have sharp lines and shape and a subject that for examples slouches and doesn’t have the similar shape in movement at the background won’t compliment the other elements in the picture. Features such as wrinkles even provide an interesting element to the picture which is something most people would be embarrassed by.

Avar Compositional Moment (Discussion #3)

When in photography, moments are always going to pass you by. You simply just can’t ask the world to redo a certain action. Perfect opportunities come and go and rarely do you get a do over. If you have a camera, and just so happen to come across a certain scenery or subject with the compositional elements you desire, you better as well take that photo before that moment passes. But then you may also want to consider the consent of your subjects; if they want to be in your photos. That’s why at times there’s a bit of anxiety in photography; wanting to capture the right moment but worrying what someone may say if they notice you. You always need to be on your guard when committing to photography.

Discussion 3

Bresson’s ideas on how compositional elements can come together in a decisive moment are using shapes; he says it helps show rhyme. He is particularly fond of Geometry. Curves, lines, and designs are what he pays attention to. He says once a moment passes that is the end of it, as you can’t ask them to pose or remain in the same position to capture the photo.

Discussion 3: Compositional Moment

Try and have a picture which concretizes as a situation which at one glance has everything and which has strong relations of shapes which for Henri Cartier is essential for because it’s a visual pleasure. There’s a rhyme between different elements. All those elements are important to have in mind when photographing.

Discussion 3

Bresson explains at the beginning of the video he focuses on the geometry in a picture. For example:lines, shapes, curves and the relationship that forms between them in a photo. He doesn’t overthink when capturing a photo instead he acts in that moment. Even a small movement can change the photo so if you make a mistake you have to take another picture. You can’t take an exact picture as you did before, as he said “life is fluid” everyone is moving, you can’t go back and ask them to remain in the some position as before, therefore it is important to stay alert and present.
