I have a white table and a white side drawer. I used these pieces of furniture as my setup for this project, and to make good shadows. I used a plant by the potatoes to give off the impression of such crops that can sprout green plants (like maybe garlic or a beanstalk?). I have a stationary lamb, and a smaller camera light that my dad provided. With these two light sources I tried to make good sidelight and backlight shots. I think my backlight shots give off better shadows.

Lab 11: Food/Fill

Since the pieces of cake are already inside a white container, I didn’t need to do much with the background. All I did was set up a white table and place the food on top of it. I used a lamp I have in my room for the lighting. I had the lamp in one hand and my phone in the other to take the pictures. The two pictures I think came out the best were “Side Light 3/4” and “Side Light Direct”. The quality of those two are my favorite.

Lab #11- Food/Fill

I used a white canvas meant for painting as my background. Using this gave me 18×24 area space to play with. The images shot was during morning time using natural window light. I used a little flashlight as a fill and a small canvas white board to reflect the light. I believe I achieved better results using a fill because the additional light source to reflect the organic window light not only casts a shadow, but the fill emphasizes the shadows making it clearer and the fill also adds dimension to the overall photograph. The image that I think is best is the “backlight fill 3/4” photo. The light source in this image is recognizable and I really like the highlight on the garlic. I also like the different values in shadows that is created by the reflective light.

Background with red mat

Background with black mat

I chose these two styles to show both the purity and poverty aspects of these crops. The vibrant colors with the red mat best show the purity of the onions and potatoes as rich crops. But the dark picture with the black mat can also imply the poverty aspect of not having much food except for these said crops.
