A great photograph consists of the message, mood and/or emotion in which is being shown or displayed. Sometimes a great photo becomes a theme or describes/shows a scene, person/place or thing to convey a specific message. Photos can be fun and some photos can be used to influence others or inform the public of what is going on around the world, what must be brought to our attention or what can help connect and bring people together. A great photograph should be able to speak for itself when telling its story and it should capture a moment in time no matter how sad, happy, dark or light it may seem to look to those who observe it.

It is hard to take a photo that can speak for itself. Usually a lot of the meaning of a photo comes from its context.
