Reading Response to Frederick Douglass — Gary

3.What does Douglass mean when he says that “learning to read had been a curse rather than a blessing” ?

To me Frederick Douglass was very naive as most kids are but it wasn’t his fault . Being raised during slavery had to be hard he didnt have any family around he was most likely separated by the slave trade or they passed away. He never got to have a real childhood experience; he always had to work and follow unjust rules. One of the only things he liked to do for fun made him aware of all the unjust laws and unfair treatment going on. Frederick  Douglass doing the thing his slave owners feared the most showed him that the world was cruel and inhuman.  He felt that his existence was cursed because for so long he thought that’s how life was supposed to be but in reality he was a trapped child who was blind to a lot of things going on around him.

“Slavery proved as injurious to her as it did to me”

Slavery has been around for hundreds of years, we all know there’s still racist people out there but nothing like back then. Frederick Douglass was born in one of the most racist eras; he was lucky to have one nice slave owner. She decided to teach him how to read and write because she thought he was a really good slave and because he was young. His mistress thought it would be harmless to teach him how to read and write. She realized he was becoming more intelligent, which made him a threat because knowledge is power. In the end he saw her true colors, she became upset about his progress and she wanted to treat him worse than her husband just to prove a point.

  1. Get right to answering the question. The first sentences in your answer are unnecessary: To me Frederick Douglass was very naive as most kids are but it wasn’t his fault . Being raised during slavery had to be hard he didnt have any family around he was most likely separated by the slave trade or they passed away. He never got to have a real childhood experience; he always had to work and follow unjust rules.

Here is where your answer should begin: [One of the only things he liked to do for fun] made him aware of all the unjust laws and unfair treatment going on.

[One of the only things he liked to do for fun] — what is this one thing — Be more clear and more specific in your writing. READING made him aware of ….

AGAIN you start with sentences that are unnecessary: Slavery has been around for hundreds of years, we all know there’s still racist people out there but nothing like back then. Frederick Douglass was born in one of the most racist eras — get straight to the answer.

You chose a good quote: “Slavery proved as injurious to her as it did to me.” However you need to explain more clearly the words in the quote. Why was slavery INURIOUS to the mistress? When I ask you to explain a quote, you must deal with the exact words that FDouglass writes. How was the mistress, a member of the white empowered class, INJURED by slavery? THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED TO EXPLAIN.
