My research question is how did the Covid-19 pandemic affect the mental health of students? I chose this topic because I didn’t really consider it while everything was shutdown until towards the end of it. The message I’d like to promote is mental health is a crucial part in the development of youth and we should do more to help students in that aspect. The target audience would be students that want to own a business to aid mental health as well as adults that are in positions to create programs or businesses. Right now I’m trying to decide if I wanna create a graphic novel or write up an Op-ed piece. An Op-ed would really allow me to say everything I want to with freedom to just write. A graphic novel however would be easier but not as time consuming so I’d be able to devise more ideas/drafts. Then again coming up with characters, their appearances, and a storyline will possibly be a challenge but we’ll see. To get started on either one I have to decide what exactly I want to for sure say and how to word it.
Wow, Devin, I love your project proposal. I think you will do good on the graphic novel and the Op-Ed piece. And I agree that mental health is affecting young people in the pandemic.
Thank you.I’m hoping it turns out well.
I think the graphic novel would be cool to see. It would be entertaining while still being informative.
Devin:
You write: The target audience would be students that want to own a business to aid mental health as well as adults that are in positions to create programs or businesses.
AND I ASK: why the business angle?
I think your target audience can be parents and teachers who can help students more effectively if they are armed with more knowledge of the seriousness of young adult mental health after this pandemic.
You told me that teen suicide rates are climbing as a result of the pandemic loneliness and isolation …. that is serious! Your research also had one source discussing parental abuse … this is serious!
An op-ed would be a call to action.
A graphic novel would be a more creative way to do this. In this genre, you would use pictures to tell a story of what? YOu need to tell a story — You would be writing a story but telling it in pictures. Do you have a story line in mind? Character, plot, setting…. Can you make a story board as a preparatory step? Do you have time to do the drawings….Maybe you could do a comic strip; that sounds more manageable than a graphic NOVEL. It sounds very interesting and since you do art, you might really enjoy this.
Remember that your story line must reflect the research. Use your research to create your story line.
YOu need a mentor text — find one and show me because I did not post a mentor text for comic strip or graphic novel.
I am excited to see what you produce!
Today’s NYT has an article about the many comic book stores in NYC. Just thought you might be interested.
Thank you cause I’ve been looking.
