LETTER

Dear Parents of KIPP AMP Academy middle school,

In today’s society, video games have become rampant in our children’s day-to-day activities. Although these video games may seem very entertaining for your children many of these video games have a negative influence that can impact your children  in aggressive and violent ways. Video games such as “Fortnite, Grand Theft Auto, Call of duty, etc” consists of features that allows you to scavenge for armor and weapons and the primary motives are to kill ,rob banks and hijack cars. In an article on Psychology Today website, “The American Psychiatric Association” states, “in 2015 concluding that playing video games may lead to more aggressive moods and behaviors and attracts the players feelings empathy and sensitivity to aggression”. This clearly shows that because of the savagery shown in these video games children will have a hard time empathizing with others and are more likely to be hostile towards their peers. Also on the USA today website an article named “Study Confirms Link Between Violent Video Games and Physical Aggression”, states that “It was learned Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the two teenagers who committed the Columbine High School shooting played the first shooting computer game Doom”. This text is significant because it shows how two teenagers decided to practice this video game in real life. This violence act had harmed many people in the process also the two teenagers had a lack of empathy. It also states on the Children’s Health website that “Research has shown that when children and adolescents see individuals they connect with in media… they are more likely to adopt to those influencers opinions…research believes the same way happened in video games”. This text is very important because it shows how as teenagers when we identify and like certain people we see on social media we tend to copy those influences and this can have the same effect on violent video games. If the primary goal of video games is to kill people in a virtual world and use AK 47 guns this will continue to have an effect on children’s behavior and social skills.  This is why as parents we need to look at the type of video games our children play so that they would not end up becoming unsympathetic and antagonistic. Therefore, as parents we need to be cautious of the video games we buy for children. Parents need to consider buying children healthier video games that can exercise their mind and help with children’s learning abilities. In the end violent video games should not be bought in a household because children are easily influenced and persuaded to follow the lifestyle of these violent video games.

                                                                                               Sincerely, Arnelle Martinson

Dear CEO of Gamestop, George Sherman,

In this day in age, video games have become the social norm and trend for children and teenagers. These video games that teenagers are exposed to young adults can show very violent and graphic images. Because some of these video games are violent and sexually explicit, it can negatively  impact teenagers to cultivate immoral behaviors. I propose to you CEO of Gamestop George Sherman, that violent video games are no longer sold at Gamestop.

Teenagers that are continually susceptible  to violent acts in video games can send the wrong message to their minds. In an article called “Do Violent Video Games Trigger Aggression?” shows  that a study created by a psychologist named Hull states, “ Hull theorizes violent games help kids become more comfortable with taking risks and engaging in abnormal behavior. Their sense of right and wrong is being warped”. This text comes to show that when children repeatedly play violent video games they are more likely to think its okay to carry out vicious behavior in schools such as being hot-tempered and becoming a bully to their peers without caring about the consequences. Children are supposed to be raised with morals that will allow them to be nice and friendly amongst their peers. Violent video games will lead a child to becoming anti-social and restrain them from taking part in social activities in school, if it takes over the child or teenager’s life. This is why it is very important to remove violent video games such as “Grand Theft Auto,Assassin’s Creed,Black Opps” out of the gaming market.

On the other hand, there are many gamers like you,  Mr. Chairman, who would disagree with taking all the violent video games  out of the market. For example a gamer named Tom Fober in an article titled “ Do Video Games Encourage Violent Acts?”states that “  While this desire might be considered unsavory, it can also be understood as an outlet for our aggression and darker desires, in a safe fantasy world where nobody dies forever.” This sentence suggests that video games is a place where people are able to satisfy their heart desires for violence and aggression in a secure place which is the “video game” without hurting anyone. However, I disagree with this statement because there has been multiple school shootings due to the use of violent video games. In an article on CBSnews.com titled “Do Violent Video Games Lead To Criminal Behavior” points out that “ The games came under fire in 2012 after Adam Lanza gunned down 20 children and six teachers in Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. It later turned out that he was obsessed with violent video games.”  This clearly shows that, although Adam Lanza played video games in his home safely without hurting anyone for a while, he later felt the need to take this practice of violent video games out into the real world and take innocent lives away.  The violent video games he played repeatedly had impacted his behavior in becoming savage and hostile towards others in real life. This example shows why we need put all violent video games out of the market.

In the end, violence in any shape or form ,whether it is in a virtual world or real world should not be accepted. Violent video games can destroy the mind of a human being and can lead it into unhealthy acts of immorality. Ending Violent Video games would put this world in a safe place.

Annotated Bibliography Reflection

My annotated bibliography genre was based on restaurant reviews. In the restaurant review annotations, I saw many similarities that all the sources share which is very significant in writing a restaurant review.  All of my sources share the same point of giving the audience a description of the food that is being sold at the restaurant. For example, in one of my sources it directly states the type cuisine being served which is Caribbean food and it tells the audience the specific foods to order when they visit. The second thing that all my sources share is a casual and informative tone in order to describe the restaurant. The reviewers of the restaurant also share one common dislike about the restaurant which is the high pricing of the food served. This sticks out to me because it shows that many restaurant reviewers like to have a restaurant that is affordable and not too expensive. Lastly, the restaurant reviews all share first person point of view because it describes the food and customer service based on how they feel about the restaurant’s environment. This shows that all restaurant reviews are very opinionated and biased. After looking through my annotated bibliography I learned that within my genre you need to have a claim or a well developed opinion and you need strong substantial evidence to back up that claim.  This evidence and claim will help persuade the audience to visit the restaurant or not. I don’t really have a question that remains with me.

Self Reflection

After writing my annotated bibliography genre for restaurant reviews I realized that I have a lot to work on my writing skills. One of the hardest parts of completing this assignment was using a lot of details in order to describe what I am trying to say. I realize that when I wrote my annotated bibliography I was very vague.I feel like I could have gone more into detail and explain my reasoning better. I need to work on using more evidence to describe my work. That was a major challenge doing this annotated bibliography because it is hard when you have to express what the reviewer is trying to prove. This makes you have to look at it from a different angle without copying everything the writer mentions in order to describe the reviewer’s claim. I also feel another challenge I had  was using more vocabulary to express myself instead of using basic words such as “ good, bad, sad, etc”. In order for me to become a better writer I have to expand my vocabulary. I feel that I need to read a little more and copy down different words that I don’t understand on a daily basis and this will help me improve.. My strengths for my annotated bibliography was pinpointing the authors claim and being able to detect whether this restaurant review was well detailed and the evidence was substantial in order for it to persuade the audience.

Annotation

This restaurant review is based on a restaurant named “Tanoreen” which serves Mediterranean cuisine. The infatuation is a venue, which can be found online and this particular review is towards an audience that may be seeking to try delicious Mediterranean food for an affordable price. The tone of this restaurant review is very formal and direct. The reviewer lacks details in the review for the restaurant because this review fails to describe the types of food on the restaurant’s menu and the review lacks describing the customer service. I feel that it is very vague. The reviewer only tells us that this restaurant has good authentic Mediterranean food, but it does not give a good description evidence for the audience to be convinced to try this restaurant.

Annotation:

This restaurant review is about Difara’s Pizza being the best pizza in New York City. Difara’s Pizza is a restaurant that serves well cooked pizza and it is made by one man named DeMarco Domenico, it is also located in Brooklyn, New York. The restaurant review is on  the Infatuation website that gives access to an audience that is looking for a new place to try pizza that is well-prepared and not cheap. The tone of this review is very funny yet blunt it is also straightforward. The review can be very rude as well because the reviewer uses curse words to describe this restaurant. Because of the curse words that are being used it fails to convince the audience that this pizza store is worth going to.

The main point of this restaurant review is to give readers insight about a restaurant named “Marea” that serves wonderful Italian seafood cuisine. This restaurant review can be found on the “Zagot” website which is available to people who want to try food from different cultures. The tone of this review is energetic and casual. The review is also short simple and straight to the point. The reviewer puts enough detail that would make the audience want to try this restaurant because it gives a good description of the different types of food on the menu and it tells about the customer service that is provided. The author appeal shows the use of logic because it provides good reasoning and answers to the questions that we as readers may have for this restaurant.

The review uses a logical appeal by showing data analysis to describe this restaurant. Also the reviewer is well detailed about the customer service ,food and the environment. The venue for this restaurant is on a website called Duke law and the audience is towards Duke law students. The tone is very casual. There are not many details in this review.                  One way that we are all connected to our culture is through food. Food continues to bring all of us together and puts smiles on our faces. Having big dinners and sitting around with our family is a tradition that keeps people from all around the world together. There are many different cuisines that restaurants cook. My favorite cuisine is Thai cuisine. I feel that Thai food is one of the best cuisines I’ve tried. I have been to many different Thai restaurants with my family, however one of the restaurants have stuck out to me the most. This restaurant is called “Jaiya Thai”. This restaurant serves absolutely the most tastiest and eloquent food I’ve ever had from a Thai food restaurant.

When my family and I decided to go to jaiya Thai was really skeptical about going. I was looking through the reviews on  google and they seem good. I hate going to restaurants that their food or service is bad . When I arrived at Jaiya their customer service was on point. The waitress made sure to sit us at a great table and took our coats. When we ordered our food from our tables we did not have to wait too long. When our food arrived it was nice and hot. The appetizers were delicious especially the calamari and spring rolls. The food was well seasoned and fresh. The main entree course that I got was the red fish curry. This entree had a lot of spices and the fish was well done.

In the end, “Jaiya Thai” is one of the best restaurants I’ve been to  and I definitely recommend it. This restaurant is clean and the food is well prepared. The prices are very decent also. If you love Thai food then you should definitely make a stop here.

Social media has been able to take away people’s social life nowadays, but as far as for me my only way of communicating how I feel is through my journal. My journal has really became my safe haven. I had gone through one of the most traumatic experience in my life. I thought I had real friends at one point in middle school, friends who are going to be supportive and not turn their backs against me. In middle school I had three friends. We started off as great and had no worries but one of the girls who seemed like the group leader of our friendship became jealous of me. She started throwing subliminals at me and the other two friends laugh along with her. Instead of being my friends like I thought they where they became my bullies.

At first, I ignored their mean comments ;I also kept my distance from them. Yet, they never stopped bothering me and making me feel like an outcast. I was upset and I decided to confront them. The confrontation did not end well. It turned into a fight and it was three against one. This fight was a traumatic experience because my hair extensions were pulled out along with my natural hair. Not only was my hair pulled out but I had no one to talk to after the altercation. I was lonely and it felt like as I walked through the hallways I felt judged and uncomfortable . My English teacher saw that I was not the same as I was before the fight and she realized I had no friends. I also used to participate in class alot but I stopped completely and I became silent. My teacher spoke with me one day after class and recommended I write everyday in my journal about how I felt and how my day went.

The journal, may have been the best thing that ever happened to me. I was able to write about how angry ,happy and miserable I was, without the feeling of being judged by anyone. I had also improve my social skills and began expressing myself more in class without fear. I never cared about those girls anymore and they were surprised that I was also able to make new friends who respected me. In the end, writing helped me express my feelings that was harbored inside my head for too long.

                                                    Literacy Narrative

Social media has been able to take away people’s social life nowadays, but as far as for me my only way of communicating how I feel is through my journal. My journal has really became my safe haven. I had gone through one of the most traumatic experiences in my life. I thought I had real friends at one point in middle school, who are going to be supportive and not turn their backs against me. Yet, my assumptions of those friends being loyal towards me was wrong.

In middle school I had three friends. We started off as great and had no worries. Although throughout the friendship, one of the girls who acted like the group leader of our friendship became jealous . I never understood her jealousy towards me. I had always supported her and shared everything I had with her. She started throwing subliminals at me and the other two friends laughed along with her. She also started to make rumors about me, for example she told everyone how I stole candy from the teachers desk and  she made me look like I was using her to have popularity in our grade. Instead of being my friends like I thought they where they became my bullies.

At first, I  ignored their mean comments ;I also kept my distance from them. Yet, they never stopped bothering me and making me feel like an outcast. They continued to judge me based on the clothes I wore since they were not name brand. Also they brought my self esteem down because I was constantly called ugly and hideous. I was upset and I decided to confront them. The confrontation did not end well. One of the girls slapped me and we started throwing hands at each other. All three girls ganged up on me and we fought back and forth. This fight was a traumatic experience because my hair was pulled out and my hair is very precious to me . Not only was my hair pulled out but I had no one to talk to after the altercation. I was lonely and it felt like as I walked through  the hallways I felt judged and uncomfortable. I felt everyone staring at me. It seemed like they were looking at me to see if I was broken which i was. I felt like I no longer belonged at that school. I wanted to change schools and start over. However, I thank my english teacher, Ms.Stringer for checking up on me and seeing if I was okay. My English teacher saw that I was not the same as I was before the fight. She realized I had no friends and I became very distant from the world. I also used to participate in class alot but I stopped completely and I became silent. Ms.Stringer spoke with me one day after class. She told me that usually bullies are upset with themselves and when they see others who are confident and secure they want to bring them down. She explained to me how I shouldn’t let the fight define me as weak but show me that I can break through obstacles.  She also recommended I write everyday in my journal. Ms.Stringer explained to me that writing would help me define myself and let out my emotions in a safe space

The journal, may have been the best thing that had ever happened to me. I was able to write about how angry ,happy and miserable I was, without the feeling of being judged by anyone. I had also improve my social skills and began expressing myself more in class without fear of being judged. I never cared about those girls anymore and they were surprised that I was also able to make new friends who respected me. The journal was a breakthrough for me and I feel like if anyone is going through problems or a traumatic situation, they need to speak to someone first and begin writing their emotions and feelings down because they would be able to overcome that state of unhappiness or depression and become strong and confident in themselves.
