Vaccinations

Hello everybody! So I just came across this very interesting article on the NY Times regarding vaccinations. Im sure you have heard at some point that vaccinating young kids can cause autism. This article refutes that:

So what do you guys think about vaccinations? Do you think vaccinations should be mandated or the decision of parents?

  1. This idea of vaccination causing autism appeared in an article written by Dr. Andrew Wakefield in 1998 in the British medical journal, The Lancet, and people went nuts over it. Ever since, there have been many, many studies that invalidate this idea, and even Dr. Wakefield retracted himself. Not vaccinating children will cause more damage because something such as measles can come back as an epidemic again. According to a 2008 article in the NYT, “More people had measles infections in the first seven months of this year [2008] than during any comparable period since 1996, and public health officials blamed growing numbers of parents who refuse to vaccinate their children.”(1) So you can see how one person can cause immense damage by providing unconfirmed information.

  2. I think that vaccinations are important for everybody whether it be older people or kids.I .A vaccination is really important for newborns babies when they get sick because they cannot take medicine besides tylenol.

  3. every kids should be vaccinated and it should not be left for parent to decide whether or not their children be vaccinated. some careless parent will be procrastinating and the children will end up not being vaccinated.
Also the benefits of vaccination is far more than its disadvantages. therefore it should be kept mandatory the way it is, and regulated by the government.

  4. Vaccines are important health safety guards, and we should follow our doctor’s advice. However, we should reexamine the type of vaccines we have and the doses. We should always try to make vaccination with less side affects.

  5. I think vaccinations are definitely important and all children should be vaccinated to avoid serious health problems and also to prevent the spread of infections. At this point many early educational institutions require parents to vaccinate the children or the children will not be allowed entry. Young children’s immune systems are weak and they cannot withstand a serious infection which can ultimately cause severe illness or even death. We must remember that that is the ultimate reason for vaccinations. They were made to protect not harm. As a parent myself, I am all for vaccinations.

  6. I completely agree with the article in that vaccinations are in fact a beneficial prevention of certain diseases. In my opinion, vaccinations should be mandated and implemented as part of children’s overall health. Many parents believe that vaccines are not safe or that it may lead to the diseases that they are designed to prevent. As mentioned in the article, one of the most common myths includes how vaccines increase the risk of autism which is not true. There are numerous studies that prove vaccines are extremely safe and important for children. Further, it protects others who are at risk. While the usage of vaccinations remains optional, everyone should be more aware and educated of its prevention benefits.

  7. I think vaccinations are important, they are the reason we can survive and resist so many different diseases that our ancestors would of probably die from. But I do understand people concern with given young children the many different type of vaccines without fully understand how each vaccines react with different type of blood, etc.

  8. Vaccinations pertaining to young babies are very important due to the fact that their immune systems are so under developed. In NYC for example newborns should follow a vaccination schedule for sure just because the city is so populated, and parents need to go out. They can’t be expected to remain quarantined in the house for months on end if something was created to keep their children from getting sick, allowing them to leave the home while being protected. Even if they did stay home thats not a guarantee that nothing can happen since babies learn the world by tasting. You never know what they can be putting in their mouth. Sickness in babies in comparison to adults are so so different and are taken a lot more seriously. A fever can easily start in an infant and many times they need to be hospitalized due to the fact that they cant take all the kinds of cold medicines that we can. As you grow your immune system gets stronger and thats great but I would like my babies to have a good head start and I would like peace of mind if I decide to take them in public. As they get older I would also feel good knowing that they are safe going to playground and school to interact with other children.

  9. This is a very tough decision. I have had all of my vaccinations up to date. It may cause different effects in the body for different people and they may have a bad reaction to it, either short term or long term. It may be hard to pinpoint, and as well there are other factors to look into since people automatically blame vaccinations along, when it could be a person’s’ intolerance for it. Not everyone is built the same, we react to different chemicals differently. Our body is made up of different compositions, things we intake such as food or needles that are in our body can affect others, whether good or bad. Like red dye in hot Cheetos and Takis that can cause cancer.

  10. I think vaccinations should be mandated cause it’s the only way to prevent kids to get some serious disease but at the same time parents should be involved in following the program

  11. One of the most important parts of the debate about vaccination is the idea of “herd immunity” — which is that there are some people and children (those with allergies or immunodeficiencies like Chrones disease, pneumonia, or even HIV) who are at greater risk for diseases like measles, the flu, etc but because of their condition, they are not able to use vaccines. As someone who has a healthy immune system, I and most of the rest of us, are doing those people a service by getting our vaccinations completed so that we, the “herd”, stop any transmissions before they get to the vulnerable people who cannot get vaccinated.

  12. Vaccination is something that I personally believe to be really important to not only our health but the health of our society. Vaccine are something that parents have the option to decide whether they want to give it to their children or not. However, I feel that vaccination should be a mandatory requirement. Individual not choosing to vaccinate are making the most vulnerable population become at risk. The elderly and newborn kids could easily get affected by these life threatening viruses. Viruses that have been controlled we are now seeing a rise in the outbreak of these diseases. However, parent should have a say on the time and span that they chose to vaccinate, have their vaccines further apart from one another.
