I grew up on the south shore of Long Island in a town called Islip, although i do call this place my home, i consider the place i truly grew up to be Saltaire, Fire Island. After being born in the hospital on long island it was the first place i came to, and was the place i spent every summer day and any winter weekend i could. My favorite part about growing up here is that everybody at least knows of, if not is friends with each other, and because of this i was able to roam and freely explore the town, beach, bay or anything i wanted from a fairly young age. A unique aspect of fire islands geography, that being a barrier beach with very sandy soil, means that traditional house and pathway foundations cannot be used. Wooden pillars are instead used to provide support for the house and underlying structure, as well as raising the house above the ground level to protect it if the islands water table rises during hurricane season, which it frequently does. Along with the modified house infrastructure, traditional roads, with heavy cars, would be extremely difficult in town areas. therefore, most of the commuting on fire island is done through bicycles on wooden walkways raised slightly above the ground. There is a special case in the winter for people who live on fire island year round, which my grandmother does. We are allowed to drive in the winter seasons over the Robert Moses bridge, through a gate which requires a key, and onto the island. The road is sand and dirt, and requires 4 wheel drive and a lifted vehicle, as well as being one car wide in some sections meaning cars must pull into side walkways to allow others to pass. There is a strong sense of community all throughout the year no matter what town you visit on Fire Island, but there is a special type that permeates the year round residents of this island.
