The Lottery is a short story by Shirley Jackson the focuses on a lottery draw occurring in a small village. Through the intro and beginning sections of the story we learn that this tradition of a lottery draw has been happening for many years, and over time the details and customs of it have changed and been lost over time. Eventually the villagers all gather around the box to begin the draw, and one by one they go up and draw a piece of paper. It is tradition to not look a the paper until everyone has taken on for themselves. At the end we learn the Lottery isnt as it seems to be, and the “winner’s” prize is a stoning by the other members of the village
