Culture

The clothing culture at Pen America tends to lean more towards business casual for the most part. Every Tuesday and Thursday, I tend to switch styles from business casual to professional and vice versa. The attire among the rest of the staff, including myself, is quite formal. As for the workspace, typically, interns will sit together at an open workspace area, working and chatting amongst themselves, to which I will chime in a couple of comments every now and then.

A typical workday for me on Tuesday / Thursday begins at 11 AM, which basically consists of research and creative work. I tend to do marketing and development research about supporters and donors who helped Pen America along the way. Some of the work I do may include overseeing marketing and development materials, editing and optimizing all documents on a weekly basis, outputting graphics into print-ready files, processing daily donations, and supporting the department’s creative and administrative needs such as print production, copying, data entry, photo retouching, and so forth.

At the end of my shift, around 4:00 – 4:30 PM. I always leave on a positive note, stating goodbye to those who I have greeted earlier in the morning or afternoon. By catching the train before 5:00 PM, I can usually avoid dense rush hour traffic when trying to catch the 2 train at Times Square, which allows me to finish the rest of my lunch (DIG INN) before I get home.
