Reflection # 4

The film we covered in class was called “The Greatest Movie Ever Sold.” The 2011 documentary features a man named Morgan Spurlock who is 100% dedicated to revealing the entire process of product placement by recruiting the companies and agencies who are responsible for advertising to the public.

Rejection after rejection during phone calls and private interviews with over 40 prestigious and well-known agencies and corporations. Morgan Spurlock never gives up on his dream documentary despite the feelings of failure. The rejection fuels Morgan’s ambition and passion even further, fully understanding that his film is a unique and different vision in a sea of corporate complacency.

In that particular moment, I remembered the professor’s words and what she had told us about failure, fear, self-doubt, and rejection – these are inevitable forces. However, to persevere and remain diligent leads to the path of true success. In due time, whether it be a month, year, or decade. Someone is bound to notice your work ethic and effort, but if you give up prematurely due to fear and failure, recognition and success may never come and your future opportunities may be hindered or limited.

Overall, the 2011 film / documentary gave me a much better understanding of corporate design and branding through creative terminology, such as brand personality, brand collateral, product placement, self-promotion, etc. In regard to my own branding identity, I would say it’s creative, conceptual, artistic, playful, and energetic. A personal brand is actually something I have been trying to develop and incorporate into my portfolio. This film taught me that once my personal brand is established I should share and connect my work with agencies and corporations who might find my portfolio appealing to their own cause. It’s not about what they can do for me, but rather what I can do for them.
