Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream is located at 2 Rivington Street at L.E.S (Lower East Side). It is a new American ice cream parlor and their focus is serving texture-driven small batches of ice cream that has a renewed attention to flavor and palate. The owner and founder of this ice cream parlor is Nicholas Morgenstern.
The three flavors that we tried during our culinary tourism tour was durian banana, salted chocolate, and black current. My favorite was the durian. Growing up, I ate durian so I am used to the taste and the smell. When you take a bite of the durian banana, you first taste the durian because it was very overwhelming and the after taste was banana. After a while of eating the durian banana, I didn’t taste the banana anymore and all I tasted was durian. The ice cream was soft and creamy. Next flavor was salted chocolate. I don’t like chocolate ice cream and to try it salted did not help me like it one bit. It was weird and it did not taste like chocolate. I liked the black current second; because once you take a bit of it, it was sour. I couldn’t taste the flavor really, because all I tasted was a sourness.
I’ve never been to Morgenstern’s and I’m glad we got to experience this place during our tour. I hope to return when I am around the LES area and try more of their “exotic” flavors.
I totally agree with you. The best part is that they do special like every two week in the past. You should check it out to see if they still do that. They do really exotic flavors which got me wonder, “who will want this,” but people still do like the tourists will stop by.
When we stopped by this ice cream shop, I can remember seeing post and pictures about it featuring kanye west named ice creams but after that I thought we were just going to see the regular flavors such as vanilla, strawberry, chocolate. But they had others such as one that featured durian, black current that was really tart but good. And my favorite was the salted chocolate (YUM) I really enjoyed that one because it is the perfect combo salty and sweet. My least favorite was the durian banana, I didn’t enjoy this one at all. Overall I would love to go back to this ice cream shop especially in the summer time to try some of the other flavors they offer.
The durian banana ice cream it was interest flavor the durian have a weird yet unique smoky and semi rotten taste. I would say it was better than the herrin in cream which was unique due to I don’t eat raw fish often and the cream had a sour flavor to it and have a fishy after taste
Coming to this shop was a nice little experience because it had been so long since I had eaten ice cream due to the winter season and such. I was happy to be able to try three different flavors. I’m not a fan of chocolate ice cream a lot, it’s usually too bitter for my taste buds though the salted chocolate here wasn’t bad but it still didn’t change my general view on chocolate ice cream. The black currant was tart, a good pop of flavor, easily my favorite of the three. The durian I was so skeptical of because of all the negative reviews I had heard surrounding the ingredient and those came true immediately. It was so “raw” with its rotten flavor and it didn’t go down well either. Like Ariel mentioned above, any sort of banana flavor completely went away like it was just purely durian. I can safely say that durian will never touch my taste buds again after that experience. Overall though, I would definitely come back to this shop.
First, I really liked how it looked outside with the opened blue windows. It is a small ice cream shop but cute. I really liked the black current one because I enjoy tartness in food. But on the other hand, I really disliked the banana durian one. I felt like I was eating onions but in an ice cream form. It was not a pleasant taste to my mouth. I never had durian and it hit me so hard because I was not expecting that flavor to be in an ice cream.
If you want a unique ice cream experience then Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream is the place to go. Yes, they offer your typical chocolate and vanilla flavors but they also have flavors like strawberry durian, banana curry and cardamom lemon jam. The flavor combinations and wide variety of ice cream flavors would appeal to just about everyone. The three flavors that I tried were durian banana, black currant and salted chocolate. The durian banana and salted chocolate were rich and creamy, and the black currant was tangy. The salted chocolate was the perfect combination of salty and sweet you don’t only get the creamy rich chocolate but the flavor is enhance with the salty addition. The black currant was to bitter and tangy for me, I personally didn’t like it, however you could differently get the berry flavor. My favorite of all three was the banana durian, not only do you get the banana flavor with its creamy texture but also the addition of the durian that brought a unique taste to the ice cream.
I work for at a liquor store. It is a family business at Jackson Heights. Therefore, I barely get out of my triangle. I am always there, school, internship and home. Occasionally, I do go out and explore my beautiful city. Walking around the LES and Little Italy made me realize the beautiful history this city has. I really like the ice cream shop. My favorite flavor one was chocolate of course. Many people were talking about the Durian Banana flavor. They said it was bland and smelly. My opinion, I do not think it was as bad as they made it seem. I don’t even think I smelled anything funky. Di Palo’s Italian shop is also very history. I felt that shop being very authentic and Italian especially in that community and neighborhood. I think realism in the culture and food is what makes this shop so unique. I think that to many Italians Di Palo’s shop is home to many immigrant Italians.
Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream is a little cute ice cream shop. When we were walking to this location I would have never imagine we were walking to this exact location. When we arrived I read the name of the shop. It sounded familiar. Then I realized it was a well known ice cream shop that many people go for their unique ice cream flavors. There was a time when they featured ice cream flavors featuring Kayne West.
We tried three different flavors.. Durian Banana, Salted Chocolate, and Black Current. The durian banana was my least favorite because the flavor was too strong. When I was about to taste the ice cream, the strong smell caught my attention. I thought it was something in the air, but it was really the ice cream. The Black Current was a sorbet. Even though it had a tart taste I enjoyed it.
