Updated syllabus & “Law in Culture review” assignment posted!

Hello Students!

I hope you’re enjoying this beautiful weekend, I’m sorry to interrupt, feel free to ignore this post until Monday! But if you’d like a preview of what we’ll discuss in Monday’s Intro class, check out the “Class notes & materials” tab where I’ve posted an updated version of the combined syllabus for these courses, and the “Law in Culture review” assignment that you’ll complete this semester for 5% of your Intro course grade, replacing the “Book review” assignment previously listed on the syllabus.

There are no major revisions in the updated syllabus. All the dates, course requirements, and other important information is the same. The only significant changes are these:

  • My office hours have changed slightly: instead of ending 2pm on both days, now on Mondays they will end at 1:45pm, and Wednesdays they will extend to 2:15pm.
  • “Book review” assignment is replaced with “Law in Culture review” assignment that we’ll discuss Monday, now posted under “Class notes & materials” and “Assignments.”
  • “Summarizer and responder” assignment has been omitted from the list under “Homework and other assignments.” One less thing you have to do! 🙂 Does not change the grade calculation at all, it was not worth any specific percentage.
  • In the “Class Schedules” I have added a notation that classes do not meet on Friday, September 18, in observance of Rosh Hashanah. So our 1103 Civ Pro class will not meet that day. 🙁 You’re not getting an extra day off, sorry–the prior schedule did not have us meeting that day, I just neglected to note the reason why.

All other changes were superficial–typos, etc. Still, you should review it and we’ll discuss it in tomorrow’s class.

DON’T FORGET! By 10am tomorrow (Monday), please email me a question or other short response to the assigned reading, as long as you’d like, though a sentence or two is plenty. Please see the “Assignments” tab for details.

Enjoy the rest of this beautiful day, see you tomorrow (Monday) 11:30am!

Cheers,

Prof. C.

Who I Am!

I am Kerin Coughlin, the instructor of these courses. I am in the Law and Paralegal Studies program because it’s my job! 🙂 I chose it as my job because I love law, and I love teaching. Many moons ago, I was a junior high school Social Studies teacher, then I became a lawyer, then I started teaching law part time while I was practicing law full time, and guess what? I realized I liked my part-time job better than my full-time job. So I switched it up, and thankfully I found this great position at City Tech. I’ve been teaching here for six years now.

Something I want you to know about me is that I love my cats. They’re brothers, and they’re both named Darryl which makes my life easier. You’ll hear me talk about them a lot, and I’ll probably bore you with pictures of them. Here’s one that’s a few years old but they still pretty much look the same, except fatter:

I look forward to working with you and getting to know you all this semester, in these crazy circumstances!

Cheers,

Prof. C.

THANK YOU! and tomorrow’s class!

Hello Students,

THANK YOU all for joining our first class session yesterday!  I truly appreciate your enthusiasm and cooperation as we get acclimated to the new online format.  I’ve posted the information from yesterday’s class here on our OpenLab site: class notes and syllabus are under the “Class Notes & Materials” tab, and the assignment due tomorrow, including links to the pages you need to read, is under the “Assignments” tab. I also emailed this information to everyone, in case anyone has not been able to join this site.

I look forward to seeing you TOMORROW (Friday, Aug. 28) at 2:30pm for our first class in LAW 1103, Civil Law and Procedure! We’ll finish at about 4pm, after which I’ll meet individually with some students. Here is the link, which is the same link as yesterday’s class, and every class!  https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81380874817 (meeting ID 813 8087 4817).

Have a great afternoon and evening, see you tomorrow!
