Richard Avedon & Jonathan Mannion

Richard Avedon photographs are some of the beautiful works because of how his subjects always standing out whether if its there expressions or their body language. Avedon’s portrait style of work is black and white on a white background which shows a lot of contrast in his subjects. Jonathan Mannion is a photographer for hip hop for two decades now. He photographs rappers, artists, designers, and actors. Most of Mannion’s portrait work style is in color and black and white. Which is similar to Avedon’s style. For example, Mannion uses some techniques that he learned from Avedon which is shown in his portrait of Jay Z. He photographs  Jay z in front of a light background which made him standout because of the contrast. Most of his portraits are high in contrast and his subjects also standout like Avedon’s style.

Inspiration: Richard Avedon & Jonathan Mannion

Avedon’s portrait style is shooting in black and white to give contrast to his photos. His choice of a white color background is a a great choice for having his subjects stand out. It gives the deatails in the photo a little more pop. Johnathan Mannion uses the same technique as reference of Avedon’s style of taking portraits and applies it in the photo of Jay-Z by using the same white background, show great contrast, Jay-Z gesture is facing the camera while his head is tilt down a bit along with a 3 1/4 head turn slightly. The style in this portrait is the same as Avedon’s work. Mannion uses short light, broad light, split light, and Rembrandt Light with or without fill. By observing both of their works I have to admit that I’ve learned quite a lot from both of these remarkable artists. This is gonna help push me further into doing more portraiture photoshoots.

Yousuf karsh and Nadav Kander

Yousuf Karsh was an Armenian-Canadian photographer who was born in Turkey. Yousef Karsh’s photograph are black and white. The picture itself tells us a story without any extra added object or features. His style of works are breathtaking. I say that because the contrast. THE Shades of grey in his photos creates emotional storm within us. He has photographed a lot of famous people. They are already mysterious figures. I get a feeling that his pictures helps us understand their charecter and personality in depth.

Nadav Kander London-based photographer He was born is Israel. He shoots portraits and landscapes. His style of photograph takes an artistic turn where he adds graphic elements to the portraits which I found quite amusing. He breaks the boundary. He plays around with the lighting to create a fabricated feeling and story. It does leaves the audience with the space to be more creative as they interpret the images. His landscapes are phonemonal. The colors are amazing it sets a mood and creates feelings that does perfectly with the photographs.

Yousuf Karsh and Nadav Kander

Yousuf Karsh is a Armenian-Canadian photographer who had major in taking black and white photographs. Karsh used  lighting to model his subjects’ faces, and obtaining an idealized presentation that helped promote their public image. When we look at his work he captured photos of writers, actors, artists, musicians, scientists, and celebrities. The reason of taking famous people’s picture is he believed in that it’s the minority who make the world go around, not the majority. I love how he used the light on people’s faces and the angle he took the photographs. Also, I believe black and white photographs make the picture more strong, attractive to the viewer’s eye.

Nadav Kander was born in Israel, who started photography with working in a darkroom printing aerial photographs. He is best known for his Yangtze which is also called “The Long River Series”. His photographs are based on architectural structures where humans are shown as small in their environment. Figures are become smaller  by landscapes of half completed bridges and by Western-style apartment blocks.

Karsh and Kandar

Karsh was a famous photographer from the from the 20th century. He photographed famous people from Winston Churchill to Sophia Loren. His work of portraits tells a story of that era of time. His style of photography is he brings the moment out of a person through there eyes. He had an understanding of light which is still recognizable in today’s time. Many of his portraits have a different movement of eyes which is intriguing to the eyes. Also, his portrait has an attitude which can relate to the audience. The mood of the photos depends on what kind of personality. One photo, I loved is Nelson Mandela because there is this sweet connection which he pulled out of Mandela which he has his hands together for prayer and eyes are filled with happiness.

Kandar was a famous photographer who takes a portrait of people. His work shows more emotion. Each portrait has personalities that show various types of emotion that people don’t talk about on regular basis. His photography is very informative and collectible pieces which have to mean. He uses a lot of contrast to convey and draw people into his work. It tells us what people are going through in this world. For instance, Saqid Khan’s portrait is black and white but has a lot of contrast to show the personality. There is the impact of negative and positive because of split on the face. Both photographers have famous work of portraits but I would like to emulate the contrast and light in photography in upcoming assignments.

Yousuf Karsh & Nadav Kander

Yousuf Karsh; born in Mardin, Turkey. Was and American Canadian photographer better known for his important and beautiful portraits of famous and historical people. He photographed Albert Einstein, Martin Luther King, President John F. Kennedy, President Fidel Castro, Nelson Mandela, Princess Elizabeth and more. His portraits are gorgeous and the way he uses the light is incredible. One of his significant portrait is the one of Albert Einstein. In this portrait we can see that Yousuf Karsh uses a back light to pop up the subject from the background. Also, he uses some extra light for the sides to fill the dark areas; and of course, a key light which is almost on the side and high.

Nadav Kander; born in Tel Aviv, Israel. His better known for his portraits and landcapes. Kander portraits looks more like a composition; an art that his creating using a photograph. It is incredible how Nadav Kander uses a projector or some reflector to add this pattern or texture to the subject’s skin. One of my favorite photograph of Kander is the one attach below. Here we can see how he’s using a projector to illustrate an emotion and create an art out of a photograph. Also using the monochromatic color scheme of green is beautiful and holds the composition together. I would love to try something like this because is eye catchy and I know that the model would love this type of portrait.

Eddie Redmayne, “Forest” By Nadav Kander, 2016

Yousuf Karsh & Nadav Kander

Yousuf Karsh definitely has one unique style and you can see the same sort of style through all his photography. His photography is very dramatic with exquisite lighting. He photographs a lot of celebrities and historic people throughout his career. He specializes in portrait photography and I believe he is successful at it because of his positioning of the subject and lighting. The photos captivate you and make you wonder more about who the subject is if you already don’t know. They give the person an extra sense of greatness. He knew the best way to light the subject and how to get the readers eyes to follow the story in the image. He would learn about his subjects so he could position them in a way to tell their story. He would not prepare in advance for the photoshoot instead he would think of everything the day of. This sort of unpinning is what helps a photographer think on their feet and can usually creat the most interesting images.

Nadav Kander is a modern day portrait photographer that spends most of his time photographing celebrities. He uses very cool colors in his photography work and in lighting his subjects. You can almost instantly tell something is his work from the aroma of cool blue lighting hitting the subject or the frame. I believe Nadav has use this cool light to his advantage in making himself stand out from the average portrait photographer and establishing a style thats true to himself. Nadav also has a great eye for positioning his subjects in an interesting way. He is known for his portrait photography, but he also specializes in landscape and other forms oh photography. But yet you can lost see his style across all different arrays of his work. I believe the cool colors would be the best way to describe his style of work. He loves using them.

Two K’s of Photography

Yousuf Karsh portrait work is very intriguing to the eye and it captures a story. His portraits gives people what his life is about. One image that stands out is the image with his mentor. You can tell in the way that the photograph was taken that his mentor was apart of his long career as a photographer. It portrays the meaning of support and balance that Karsh had. His black and white portraits are keen and meaningful to a photographer that enjoys doing black and white portaits.

Nadav Kander portrait work is very different from Karsh because his portraits are very political. His portraits are very emotional and you feel cold when you look at his photos. Based on his website, his portraits are chosen based on the current time. It does not require one to look in the camera or even be engaged with it.

I plan on emulating more of Kander’s idea of portraying emotion in upcoming assignments.

Yousuf Karsh and Nadav Kander

Yousuf Karsh was an Armenian-Canadian photographer in the 20th century, and he was best known for his portraits. Yousuf Karsh photographs were majorly in black and white, and they were portraits of famous individuals. After seeing Karsh’s work, I notice that his style of pictures wasn’t having famous individuals smile at the camera. His style was to photographed them neither them looking at the camera without smiling or looking away. His photos made the famous individuals look neither powerful, wise or artistic. Each of the portraits showed the individuals just how remarkable they are. One of the Karsh’s portraits I liked was Fidel Castro 1971 portrait. The image is just a close up of Castro’s face. However, his expression shows us how big, and powerful he is. He isn’t someone we shouldn’t mess with. I like how is Castro directly at the camera, and the lighting makes Castro’s eyes stand out.  Overall, the portrait is something similar I want to try to learn, me trying to learn my subject to create a sharp image.

Nadav Kander born in 1961 and he’s currently an active photographer, he’s known for his landscapes and portraits. Similar to Karsh, Kander photographs famous individuals, however, his style is very different than Karsh. Kander work shows artistic pictures, and his work is either in black and white or color. The method he creates is both art and design, he creates unforgettable portraits. One of the Kander’s portraits I like was Brad Pitt Vll, 2011 picture. I like this portrait because of lighting. There is a strong contrast between light and shadows because of this it makes Brad Pitt look like a big movie star. I also like how Brad Pitt isn’t looking directly looking at the camera but away. Brad Pitt looks very pretty and I would like to try to create something artistic.

Kander and Karsh

Yousef Karsh is a 20th Century American-Canadian photographer is well known for photographing celebrity and prominent figures of his time. Wilson Churchill, John F Kennedy, Martin Luther King and Queen Elizabeth II are just to name a few. He was particularly successful in his portraiture because he used dramatic composition to convey a particular perception of his subject. He accomplished the dramatic composition by using a high contrast in lighting for strong political figures such as my favorite of Dr. Martin Luther King. The light is directly placed on his face as he looks up to the sky because it is a representation of his high hopes and dreams of the future. The dramatic contrast is a representation of the song figure that Mr. King was in our American history. Karsh also photographs Mr. King in his University robes with books in the background in order to portray how well educated he was. When he photographed Queen Elizabeth II, he photographs her in a soft light because she is to be seen more as a loving motherly figure. Overall Karsh very successfully uses lighting and background display to create a classic portrait style.

Nada Kander is a British-Israeli photographer well known for his portraitures and landscapes. His passion for photography began at the age of 13 when he bought himself his first Pentax camera. Kander’s style is a little more modern in that his portraiture is more playful and not as serious as Karsh. The portrait of Mark Rylance immediately caught my attention. Kanders’ use of soft light and heavy use of shadows creates a sense of mystery. Even though Mark is in the dark, the candle he is holding draws you towards him and wanting to see more of him. I believe Kander chose to photograph him this way because it is a representation of Mr. Rylance profession which is a play writer. He is technically never in the spotlight but ultimately his creativity is the fire to all his works. I have never heard of Nada Kander until this assignment but I am glad I did because he is someone I would definitely look for inspiration from.
