During the start of my week, I got an email from the professional development center about an Opportunity to get a mentor. The professional development center partner with The City Tutors City Mentors to provide CUNY students and alums with unlimited on-demand assistance from industry insiders within fields they want to learn more about or want to enter. I was able to find out about this Opportunity because I had signed up for Handshake. I emailed the designated person to contact regarding getting started and gave them what my focus of career path was and I told them about digital marketing. The coordinator replied very fast within the next hour and told me he had three matches for me and to look at which mentor I felt was the best for my interest. The first potential mentor name was Guy he was an entrepreneur he was and Owner/Founder of his background Owner/Founder Tinzi Marketing. The next person was Brian his marketing background had a focus point in the science realm of marketing he is a Director in Activation Analytics(a division of marketing sciences) with Hearts & Science. The last option available was Leo who is a Go-To-Market Strategy and Operations Lead at Google. I chose Leo as my mentor and let the coordinator know and they sent a follow-up email with both me and my mentor CC on the email so we could have contact. I found scheduling a time to have a one-on-one session to be difficult due to scheduling conflicts but when we both agreed on a day it worked. Leo had sent a google hangout link was to be expected I haven’t used google hangout as much because Zoom seems to be what everyone’s using.
On the day of our Google hangout session it was very interesting I found it to be very informative without really having to ask the answer not of questions during our session. He shared how he got into digital marketing which was through SEO in which he builds his skills. His advice for me is because digital marketing has a lot of sectors you can pick from the said to find a sector I’m interested in and build your skills in that sector. We talked about having a certificate can help boost your resume which was good because I already had started working on some google certificates pryer to our meeting. I asked his opinion on working for a brand pampered to working for an agency his response was to be prepared to wear a lot of hats working for an agency. I wasn’t surprised by his response because a lot of people say that about the agency. Overall I thought our meeting was helpful and I decided to focus more on social media coordinators in digital marketing with help of our conversation.
