Session 2

  • Topic: More Miniature Image Discussion
  • Activities: Begin development of 3 sketches in black-and-white in computer.

Week 2 Lesson Plan

Session 1

  • Day & Date: Fri. Feb. 5, 2021
  • Topic: Designing a symbol; consideration of figure/ground.
  • Activities: Visual Communication disciplines are reviewed; cultural image and icon differences are discussed; history of icon usage. Bring three of your images to completion in the computer; Critique of the developed black-and-white images and their suitability as icons in their reduced form.
  • Due Dates: Three are due at the end of class.
  • To do before class: Six treatments of each of the three symbols due in BXW Grid.

Session 2

  • Day & Date: Wed. Feb. 10, 2021
  • Topic: The BxW Icon as a Symbol/Technical Instruction. File naming conventions and How to make a PDF
  • Activities: Continue to refine your six sketches, make into a pdf and upload. File Naming Conventions
  • Due Dates: By next session
  • To do before class: Bring a collection of related files or images. They could be images from your phone or files from another course. Make sure you have BRIDGE downloaded and running.
  • NO CLASS FRIDAY. Happy Lunar New Year (Year of the OX)

Week 3 Lesson Plan

Session 1

  • Day & Date: Wed. Feb. 24, 2021
  • Topic: Developing meaning to the image; conveying thoughts and emotions through images. Examples of small images and their impact on actions and ideas. Pictographic systems in world cultures.
  • Activities: Processing of icon images for screen and print. 
  • Before the next class: Process all icons for print and screen; print the three color files.
  • Icon Critiques next session. ALL MUST ATTEND.

Session 2

  • Day & Date: Fri. Feb. 26, 2021
  • Topic: Critique of icons. Bring both print and digital files; be prepared to upload and discuss.
  • Activities: Critique of Review the printed font files (assignment from last session)
  • To do before next class: Print the TYPEBOOK file and bring to next class; bring pencil, eraser, tape, and tracing paper. IF you like working in markers bring those instead.

Week 4 Lesson Plan

Session 1

  • Topic: Typography as a symbol and image, rather than a literal rendition.  The typographic image in different cultures.
  • Activities: Building a typographic image or the 27th letter of the alphabet.
  • Due Dates: At end of class, have at 25% of the 100 required number of ligatures/typographic symbols.
  • To do before next class: Finish the balance. Print 3 copies of the 6-pane template, bring tracing paper, pencils and erasers

Session 2

  • Day & Date: Fri. Mar. 5, 2021
  • Topic: The letter vs the letterform
  • Activities: Review the three best letterforms and refine further in pencil on the 6-pane template.
  • Due Dates: At end of class; brief discussion.
  • To do before next class: Bring the three best into the computer using the font files in Bb.

Week 5 Lesson Plan

Session 1

  • Day & Date: Wed. Mar. 10, 2021
  • Topic: Historical hand rendering of various typographic alphabets. The best of the ligatures are chosen. Rudiments of animation.
  • Activities: How to plan out an animation.
  • Due Dates: By the end of class, write a quick story of how the two letters will turn into one.
  • Preparation: Have supplies ready: pencil, board, rulers and knife
  • To do before next class: Print the best of the three combined letterforms. Before the next class, Google Eadward Muybridge and select a series of motion images, download them, print them and cut them up as per instructions given in class.

Session 2

  • Day & Date: Fri. Mar. 12, 2021
  • Topic: How to animate the letterforms frame by frame. Positive and negative space; the letter vs the letterform. And how to write the perfect resume.
  • Activities: Making a flip book; analyzing motion. From the written story board, plan, with drawings, the motion of how the letterform is created.
  • Due Dates: At end of class; brief discussion.
  • To do before next class: On paper, with pencil, sketch out the frames of the animation in eight frames. AND:
  • Write a list of all talents, abilities and employment history. Write the blurbs for the resume as discussed in class. DO NOT FORMAT.

Week 6 Lesson Plan

Session 1

  • Day & Date: Wed. Mar. 17, 2021
  • Topic: Continued study of frame-by-frame animations. Ligatures used in logos .
  • Activities: How to hand-paint the ligature. Demonstration. Begin painting the letter form, paying special attention to craft.
  • Preparation: Have letter-painting supplies ready
  • Due Dates: At end of class, show painting progress on one ligature.
  • To do before class: Finish the balance.

Session 2

  • Day & Date: Fri. Mar. 19, 2021
  • Session 2: Finishing the ligature and the resume.
  • Topic: Adding sound if desired. Proper resume formatting.
  • Activities: Continue working on the three animations.
  • Due Dates: Brief discussion. Finished ligatures animations due in two weeks, finished resume due next week.

Week 7 Lesson PLan

Session 1

  • Topic:  Further development of lettering animation aesthetics and techniques.
  • Activities: With at least two executed animations, present for critique.
  • Due Dates: By the end of class.
  • Preparation: Bring animated ligatures in progress.
  • To do before class: Format the content of your resume.

Session 2

  • Day & Date: Fri. Mar. 26, 2021
  • Topic: Critique on final animations. Introduction of Type on Third Dimension Project.
  • Activities: Type on Third dimension discussion.
  • To do before class: Bring three completed animations. Critique. ALL MUST ATTEND.
  • Before next session, print 3-5 sheets of the cube template. 8.5 x 11″. Print your markers/pencils, metal-edged ruler, knife and cutting board.
  • No class next week, SPRING BREAK! Have a restful week.

Week 8 Lesson Plan

Session 1

  • Day & Date: Wed. April 7, 2021
  • Topic: Type on the Third Dimension Typography on boxes (packaging) or in the three dimensions (signage)
  • Activities: Using the ligature from your sketches, transfer it to the cube template in its flattened version. Design three cube treatments pencil, cut them out and tape them together to make a cube. These are to be sketches.
  • Due Dates: By the end of class, have least one cube ready to show the class, tacked together with tape.
  • To do before next class: bring sketches of the most successful one into the computer and refine. Try printing and assembling it.

Session 2

  • Day & Date: Fri. Apr. 9, 2021
  • Activities: Critique on the first cube for its treatment of negative space, dimension, continuity.
  • Preparation: Bring three sketched treatments.
  • To do before class: Work on the other two.
  • Due date: Finish all three by next session.

Week 9 Lesson Plan

Session 1

  • Day & Date: Wed. April 14, 2021
  • Topic: Type on the Third Dimension Typography on boxes (packaging) or in the three dimensions (signage)
  • Activities: Final refinements of cube.
  • Due Dates: By the end of class, have least one cube ready to show the class.
  • Preparation: Download  template of a cube and fit it to an 8.5 x 11” format. Print three copies. Bring tracing paper and pencils, knife, blades, ruler, tape and cutting board to the sessions.
  • To do before class: Photograph of your three cubes at various angles. Make a video of your hand turning it to show the various facets.
  • CRITIQUE NEXT SESSION. ALL MUST ATTEND.

Session 2

  • Day & Date: Fri. Oct. 30, 2020
  • Topic: Critique of the assembled cubes and introduction of the Design Heroes online presentation.
  • Activities: After viewing class’s cubes, select which design hero to research.
  • Due Dates: By the end of class, have least one cube ready to show the class.
  • Preparation: From above, photograph and make video of the three finished cubes.
  • Due in two session, Design Hero Presentation.
