Me as a Writer

This semester has come to an end, but that doesn’t mean that I will forget what and how I progressed as a writer and a student. The class has been one of the funniest and enjoyable since high school. What I think is key for a student to get better at something is to like what you are doing. I liked this class and if I could, I’ll take it every semester again, but I can’t.

This class and Dr. Hall have taught me that no one is perfect at something. I’m not a perfect writer and I think that no one is, it’s just a matter of you, liking something. During this time, I learned my weakness and strengths, and how to exploit them. The biggest weakness that I have is that sometimes I don’t take my time doing things, like in this class writing as fast as possible just to finish the assignment; this only got my writing worse than it was before and I had to adjust my attitude of rushing my writings. In unit 1 like when I was talking about my grandpa, I forgot to introduce him well, this one of the many mistakes I did. He has an important role in my unit 1 and not describing him, is like working without knowing who your boss at work is. In unit 1 I said, “The tree reminds me of my grandfather, as if he is watching me waking up every morning, he’s what the tree remembers me of, because it was him who gave life to the tree, and my feelings for it”. This is where I started making the reader confused, because I kept talking about my grandpa and how he is an important part of my life, but I never describe him as a person always as an image of someone that only I know. I just needed to remember that, yes, I do know him, but the reader does not. Also, in unit 1 I talked a lot about Sicily and its nature and how majestic it is, but still I did not describe it enough to let the reader having a self image in their heads on how it really was. This all seemed banal to me, but I understood that when you write you must do it for yourself and the reader too, so that they can understand what you are talking about, especially if you have to post it somewhere. Now at the end of the semester my strength is that I know, because of my past errors, where to stop and really think about what I have to do to make things better. Before I said that I had many errors in unit 1, and because I knew I could make way better than I did the first time I wrote it, I revised it. From the time of the publication on openlab to when I revised it I understood that it really was bad, but sometimes you don’t see it right away and you must let the time pass between. So, one of the biggest errors I did was not to describe my grandpa and Sicily, and these two is what I really tried to focus more in the revision. In the second paragraph of the revision I described my grandpa more but not too much otherwise the character, my grandpa, wouldn’t evolve like I wanted to. And like my grandpa Sicily nature too, I tried to evolve them like a movie, so little by little.

During the semester we had fun moments and days where you had to write and that was it. I don’t know why but every time we had an assignment I always do it the day before, this is one of the many stupid things that someone does. Yes, for this time I’m calling my self stupid and not because I am, but because I’m stubborn. This is one of the many things I also adjust and completely get rid of; because it’s so bad doing things last minute and because of it I had the same problem with unit 3 where I did rush again like unit 1, and of course I did not expect a high grade. In the unit I had a lot of grammatical errors which when you have like 2 weeks to finish the assignment, it should be perfect. I’m going to be honest most of them were rush errors. One of them was like “Nowadays with advanced technologies in the world, cities are evolving to bigger and bigger cities everyday coming…” as simple as the introduction I already started making errors, and when you have a bad start you’ll also have a bad ending. Knowing that I could have done it in way that would have made it better I took the chance Dr. Hall gave me and of course I revised as well. I adjusted the introduction and know it starts like this “Nowadays with advanced technologies it is easier for construction industries to build buildings, and because of that cities are evolving to bigger and bigger cities everyday coming, but they also bring disadvantages”. First I didn’t say what technology has to do with cities getting bigger, but now in the revised unit 3 and what I said did change the introduction so that the reader can understand what technologies have to do with cities, in this case they do help construction industries because of new equipment evolved with new technologies making buildings is not as difficult as it was before, therefore cities like New York are getting bigger every day. These are all errors that I made when rushing and my point is that, only at the end of the semester I understood how to be a better writer and that is by proofreading your writings.

At the end of the semester what I see of my self is that, yes, I did become better at endling some things but like I said no one is a perfect writer and that is what makes a writer better. I think that making errors is what brings you a step further than you were before. Looking back, I see a student trying to rush things just to get rid of them, but now I see a student that understands when to give it all and trying to always do the best. At the end; I see myself a step further.

Noise Pollution (Revised)

Dear New Yorkers,

Nowadays with advanced technologies it is easier for construction industries to build buildings, and because of that cities are evolving to bigger and bigger cities everyday coming, but they also bring disadvantages. New York one of the biggest cities of the United States, has many problems that evolving cities encounter during their evolution like noise pollution. Noise pollution can be solved or relive with eco ideas and new instruments that we have today, or that can be develop by the industries themselves.

Noise pollution is one of the main problems that me and all New Yorker are experiencing every moment of our life. All of us can act differently of what the problem is, like people can install noise cancelling windows and doors, which are very expensive, or they just must deal with it. All New Yorkers that do take the train have to deal with the enormous sound that the train makes while moving in the railroad. All of this can seem trivial but can bring to sides effects. Noise pollution is more than just an annoyance; in fact studies have shown that noise pollution can damage physiological and psychological health, it can cause hypertension, it can increase stress levels and anxiety, and even lead to coronary artery disease. Children living in high noise pollution areas have delayed reading ages and diminished attention levels. What’s more, people exposed to long-term noise pollution often experience noise-induced hearing loss. Through the years there have been many experiments on the effect that noise pollution has on people. Exposure to prolonged or excessive noise has been shown to cause a range of health problems ranging from stress, poor concentration, productivity losses in the workplace, and communication difficulties and fatigue from lack of sleep, to more serious issues such as cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, tinnitus and hearing loss. In 2011 the World Health Organization (WHO) released a report titled ‘Burden of disease from environmental noise’. This study collated data from various large-scale epidemiological studies of environmental noise in Western Europe, collected over a 10-year period. The studies analyzed environmental noise from planes, trains and vehicles, as well as other city sources, and then looked at links to health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, sleep disturbance, tinnitus, cognitive impairment in children, and annoyance. What the study has found is that, it is estimated that daily lost from environmental noise in the western European countries are 61 000 years for ischaemic heart disease, 45 000 years for cognitive impairment of children, 903 000 years for sleep disturbance, 22 000 years for tinnitus and 587 000 years for annoyance. If all of these are considered together, the range of burden would be 1.0–1.6 million. This means that at least 1 million healthy life years are lost every year from traffic-related noise in the western European countries.

Today there are many ways which can help us reduce noise pollution. Many of them are simple and others a little more complicated but with the right approach all of them can be applied in our daily lives. A list of methods to help reduce Noise Pollution are: turn off appliances at home and offices, shut the door when using noisy machines, use earplugs, lower the volume, stay away from noisy area, follow the limits of noise level, control noise level near sensitive areas, go green by planning trees, create healthy noise to eliminate unwanted noise, use noise absorbents in noisy machineries, use proper lubrication and better maintenance, notify authorities about disobedience of noise rules, regularly check noise levels.

There are many ways of reducing noise pollution levels but, the first one that I would recommend to our city mayor is to plant trees which help to reduce sound. “It’s the sound produced by the wind passing through the leaves that really helps muffle noise” explains Robert Smith, a staff arborist for the Arbor Day Foundation. As a bonus, trees also provide habitat for birds, whose twitterings add to the pleasant background sounds. A properly designed buffer of trees and shrubs can reduce noise by about five to ten decibels or about 50 percent as perceived by the human ear, according to the USDA National Agroforestry Center. Trees also do make the city look greener, because what I see when I walk in the streets are just buildings, so it’s a good way to make the city look cozier.

Almost everyone in the world is affected by noise pollution. We can bring this to an end. Noise pollution is a problem that is and will be continuing to affect us if we don’t do something about it. We can make our voices heard by everyone in the world if we really want, and we can make all world stop for a minute and really think about this problem and how to solve it, so why shouldn’t we do it. Let’s make our voices heard by everyone in the world and especially to the people like us that do experience noise pollution every day. So, I’m appealing to the New Yorkers to help me get this message to the Mayor and all people in the world, if we do show lot of interest on the problem I’m sure that he will help us solve it, and everyone will try to do the same, one day maybe all people in the world will not have to experience noise pollution. Everyone in the world and by that, I mean nature and animals too, will only benefit when this will come to an end. Please share this idea to everyone that you know and let’s make it happen!!!

Sincerely,

Giuseppe Biondi

The Tree of Dreams

The tree, a tree that I care more than anything else, a tree that helps me getting every difficult task done, and remembers me of the most inspiring person of my life, my grandpa. A tree that reminds me of all trips of every Saturday or Sunday, where me and my grandpa use to go when I was back in Italy. That tree, that every morning remembers me of an adventure, past, and the one I take every morning a step over my house door. A tree that will always have the summer smell of the nature, a nature that brings me back in the hills of Sicily, where my grandfather and I walked step by step, admiring what nature has given us, a gift that many planets in the universe do not have, trees. A tree that my grandfather took from the hills, and then plant it in front of my house, so that it reminds me of all the advice that he shared with me. The tree, which helps me overcome the greatest difficulties of this world.

My grandfather a medium height man, but that has the strength and the passion of a Spartan man going against everyone that stands in front of him. Nowadays, his hair are growing whitener than ever, but that is one thing that awaits for everyone in our old journey. He has blue eyes that reminds me of the blue sky that has been on top of us during every day journey with him. He taught me how to be myself to love every second of my life doing what I like to do and not what your parents would like you to be in the future, but to be yourself in everything that you do and to stand for your ideas and for the people that you love. He has and still is a very important part of my life and the only thing that has cut our relation is the distance between Sicily and New York, but that for us is nothing.

Day by day, what I remember is a past time, a time, where everything was beautiful and handsome. Trees is what I remember, then, a natural paradise, where the perception of our sense’s changes, because of the nature that involves you, as if it was the last match of an important team. Sicily, my island, this is what I remember every day, looking at the tree in front of my house, and while I look at it, it takes me back in there, like a time machine, but only the most beautiful memories will surround you, because at the end a life without good memories is not a happy life. Sicily an island down South of Italy, where nature is what makes everyone happy every day, just going out and seeing a volcano called Mount Etna, that can be seen from anywhere in the island. Some times in the year you can even small the smoke coming out of the central hole of the volcano, and as a Sicilian we already know that an eruption will come soon in the day.

Every morning awakening, what the tree transmits to me, are not only memories of the island where I was born, but also the nature that it transmits to the people that live near me, because it is considered one of the most beautiful trees in Gravesend, my neighborhood in Brooklyn. All seasons of the year it transmits a different emotion, but a happy one. During the summer it is always full of green leaves that makes me, my neighbors and even the animals happy. And this is what gives me strength when I have to face days when I’m bored and unhappy and it gives me courage, as if it were the person I would always trust, my grandpa.  The tree reminds me of my grandfather, as if he is watching me waking up every morning, he’s what the tree remembers me of, because it was him who gave life to the tree, and my feelings for it. My grandfather, the person that I would never be afraid to say what I think of him, or something that went wrong that day, or just to express my ideas on something. Just so every afternoon I linger in front of the tree, as if I am talking to my grandfather, and say all the good memories that happened to me that day or other. While talking to the tree, I imagine my grandfather, as if I would be talking to him instead of the tree, and it’s this that gives life to the tree, like if it was a person and not a plant.  I call it “The Tree of Dreams” because it brings me with him to beautiful memories, like the trips with my grandfather in Mount Etna, where nature envelops you like a burrito. Trips, where the beauty of nature is all you will remember at the end of the day, and where every step counts because nature changes every step taken. From flowers, to majestic plants full of color that gives the nature of the island a beauty, that diversifies it from the others. Every step, where my grandfather explains to me the birth of plants and how they manage to take their fascinating color that not many other plants have. Where step by step, you will have a different memory of the nature that surrounds you, and it is precisely this that makes it unique.

Since the tree has been planted in front of my house, it has helped me so much, overcoming the darkest periods of my new life since I’m here. The most difficult times, were when my family from Sicily are here to stay with us. The moments spent with them are always, and forever, the most beautiful once ever, since I was young. But when it’s time for them to return to Sicily, are always the worst moments, because saying goodbye to my family, and not knowing when I would see them again, it’s frustrating for me, and leaves me a sense of darkens inside me, because the most important thing that my parents taught me are to make a life of our own, and love your family. Therefore, I am so close to my family, especially my cousins. In all this, the tree helps me remember the best moments spent with them and then helps me both morally and mentally, to face any kind of challenge to problem that arises. Every day I spent some time talking to the tree, most of the time I tell it, the craziest things I’ve done with my cousins, like the time we jumped from a 12 meters’ rock near the beach where I live. Sometimes I even tell the tree, my feelings when I was around my friends, where the only thing that surrounded you was happiness.     “The Tree of Dreams”, is where all best memories can live, where I can forget everything, and it also helps me to immerse only myself to what nature has to give us, where I can be the protagonist of all my dreams, where I am the key to change the story, where I will decide where it will take place and how it will end. Every day I ask myself a question, “who are we to decide our destiny?”. Only now I understand what the tree has tried to tell me, with past memories, is what my grandfather has been trying to teach me overtime with every journey that we had together is that, we are special, and a special person should not depend on others and try to not imitate no one, otherwise we will be robots controlled by one main mind. So starting from today when someone tells you do to something think with your mind, not with someone else’s.

Noise Pollution

Dear New Yorkers,

Nowadays with advanced technologies in the world, cities are evolving to bigger and bigger cities everyday coming, but they also bring disadvantages. New York on of the biggest cities of the United States, has many problems that big cities encounter during their evolution like noise pollution, but that with the technologies that we have today can be solved with the right amount of founding. What many people experience in big cities can affect them for the rest of their life.

Noise pollution is one of the main problems that me and all New Yorker are experiencing every moment of our life. All of us can act differently of what the problem is, like people can install noise cancelling windows and doors, which are very expensive, or they just have to deal with it. All New Yorkers that do take the train have to deal with the enormous sound that the train makes while moving in the railroad. All of this can seem trivial, but can bring to sides effects. As a matter of fact, noise pollution can damage physiological and psychological health. high blood pressure, stress related illness, sleep disruption, hearing loss, and productivity loss are the problems related to noise pollution. It can also cause memory loss, severe depression, and panic attacks.

Through the years there are been many experiment on the effect that noise pollution has on people. As we can see from the result gathered by the experiments Noise Pollution can really affect people in a bad way.

The first two that I would recommend to our city Mayor are installing traffic signs that prohibits people that are driving to horn, and they can only use it in case of emergency. The second method that I would recommend is to plant trees which help to reduce sound. According to studies it can reduce noise by 5 to 10 decibels Db around them, and also to make look the city greener, because what I see when I walk in the streets are just buildings, so it’s a good way to make the city look like not a big city I guess. All these methods are simple to apply to our daily lives so why not? They can reduce a lot of problems so there are no reasons why we shouldn’t.

Almost everyone in New York doesn’t seem like to understand why they are mad to everyone that pass their way, and maybe the answer is Noise Pollution. Now why aren’t out there a lot of articles by New York journalist’s appealing to this problem? Well I have the answer, because many of us just deal with it. This is what brings everything to a bad end, because the fact that we don’t care, never brings us to a happy ending and I get it, maybe people do not have the money to solve the problem, but when people are unable to solve problems we can always appeal to our Mayor or the Government and who knows maybe we’ll have a happy ending, but if we don’t get our voice heard then no one will care about what we think the problem is. So I’m appealing to the New Yorkers to help me get this message to the Mayor and if of course we do show him a lot of interest on the problem I’m sure that he will help us solve it, and by reducing Noise Pollution the environment and the people will only benefit from it.

Sincerely,                                                                                                                                    Giuseppe Biondi

Noise Pollution

The first article that I read was written by Ben Wellington and it basically talks about various types of noise pollution in New York and who makes them. Also the article is full of charts that show the amount of noise pollution in the city and also the amount of complains so that it is more understandable where all these noises are coming from and by that I mean the places of the city. Also what is interesting about the article is that there is one chart that shows all the calls people make because of the noise and the time they were complaining or just calling 311 to complain. The chart can be used to better show evidence of the problem and how to best solve it so that people stop complaining and everyone can live without being disrupted by noises. The link to this article is: https://www.newyorker.com/tech/annals-of-technology/mapping- new-york-noise-complaints The second article that I took a look at was written by Daniel Scheffler. It talks about some ways of how we can reduce noise pollution and he has a lot of good solution like having sound isolation windows which should be start to be used more in the market the only bad thing about it is that maybe they’ll cost more than a normal window that everyone has in there houseThe link to this article is: https://www.brickunderground.com/improve/turn-your-NYC-

Celebrities

Celebrities, everyone in the world has a celebrity which inspires them to do better and one day become like them or maybe people want to become like them. Well, what if everyone is going to start doing what most celebrities do. In some cases this can be a tragedy, because in the past few years many known celebrities committed suicide. If everyone would start doing the same the world population would go down pretty quickly, which is not a good think. A study released in February by researchers at Columbia University said there were 18,690 suicides in the four months after the death of Robin Williams in August 2014, suggesting an excess of 1,841 cases — nearly a 10% increase, based on previous monthly suicide data from 1999 to 2015 (Fottrell 4). In the past year celebrities Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain had ended their lives which has caused a lot of rumor in social media. This means that celebrities are effecting other people when committing suicide. It is important that people understand that we should stop the spread of suicide, and once for all end it. Many factors are not helping stopping suicide from happening but instead numbers of people committing suicide are increasing and reasons are unhappy environment, social media and substance abuse.

Woo and Postalache states “Behind the curtain of world economy globalization, the occupational environment is delivering increasing stress, such as job insecurity, increasing workload, and the burden of lifelong learning. Larger proportion of employees became involved in service- and knowledge-based industries requiring heavy technological preparedness and mental stress. If the pace of change exceeds the capacity of the workers to cope, negative stress reactions can occur.” (2) Woo and Postalache states “The relationship between occupational environment and mood disorders seems to be reciprocal, creating vicious cycles in many cases. For example, depressive episodes resulting from work-related stress can impact vocational performance by ‘presenteeism’ due to decreased concentration, reduced motivation, and decision errors, as well as ‘absenteeism’ Negative feedback from the organization, decreased self-esteem, and reduced salary may follow and add on the stress level of depressed workers.” (9)  This evidence is showing how bad environment can effect people in a way which most of the times leads to suicide. Most of us spends at least 5 to 8 hour s a day outside, this is why environment has such a big effect on us. What then people experience when outside effects them in different ways and those can vary. A bigger part of people are effected most by their work environment. This is crucial because by understanding what is frustrating many of us can result has a better environment and that can then lead to an happy environment and suicide rate caused by unhappy environment might reduce.

Brueck states “More people in all but one state and across every age group — from 10 to 75 years old — are dying by suicide. But Anne Schuchat, the principal deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), told reporters on Thursday that ‘middle-aged adults had the largest number of suicides, and a particularly high increase in rates.’”(10)  Carey states “The death of famed chef Anthony Bourdain, who apparently killed himself in a hotel room in France, caps a week of unnerving news about suicide. Rates are climbing across the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on Thursday — in some states, by as much as 30 percent since 1999.”  Through social media a news can be spread all over the world in seconds and can be heard by millions. Social media does play a big role on people life’s and the news that it spreads most of the time can be negative like in this case the suicide of chef Anthony Bourdain which has caused a lot of rumor when happening in the same year of Kate Spade suicide’s. Celebrities and social media are two of the most powerful way of spreading ideas and rumors but these can also affect people all over the world. The group of people of has being affected the most by all of the rumors and social media are the middle-aged adults.

Ilgen and Kleinberg states “Although it is difficult to compare the relative impact among different mental health problems with the risk of suicide, alcohol and drug use disorders have been found to be strongly related to suicide risk. 3,5  Individuals with a substance use disorder (ie, either a diagnosis of abuse or dependence on alcohol or drugs) are almost 6 times more likely to report a lifetime suicide attempt than those without a substance use disorder.” (3) Juergens states “Suicide, addiction, and depression have a very close and interconnected relationship. More than 90% of people who fall victim to suicide suffer from depression, have a substance abuse disorder, or both. Depression and substance abuse combine to form a vicious cycle that all too often leads to suicide. Many who experience such severe depression (as a result of Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and other conditions) frequently turn to drugs, alcohol, gambling, and other risky behaviors to numb their pain and/or alleviate their negative feelings.”  Most of the times, people who are thinking of committing suicide are relatively connected to problems such as depression and substance abuse disorder, these two together can be lethal and has stated from Juergens “… often leads to suicide.” This is important to understands that substance abuse can kill them. This should help people that are going through these problems so that they can stop and be free from substance abuse and it will only help them and also it will help reducing suicide rate.

What many people think is an act of craziness sometimes can be an act of good. As stated from Burton “For Hume, a person does no harm in committing suicide, but merely ceases to do good. Assuming that he is under some obligation to do good, this obligation comes to an end with death; and even if it does not, and he is under a perpetual obligation to do good, this should not come at the expense of greater harm to himself, that is, at the expense of prolonging a miserable existence for some ‘frivolous advantage that the public may perhaps receive’.” This is wrong. Living a person killing him/her self is extremely wrong. In most cases people who are thinking on committing suicide have a related problem which had brought them to the point of suicide. What instead everyone should do is trying to help them and understand what problem has brought them to the point of almost committing suicide. By helping people in difficult moments will only help them to do better.

During the past and present years, people all over the world are being influenced by celebrities. In some cases celebrities had committed suicide, and that has brought a lot of rumor all around the world and many people are being affected from it. Suicide rates are increasing every second of our life. Stopping suicide can only be beneficial for our world population. Factors that brought people committing suicide are unhappy environment, social media and substance abuse. Nowadays we have the technology and the experience of stopping and helping reducing what ever we want. We as humans should help each other out, by helping everyone in need almost every day, like people who are trying to commit suicide can help reduce death rates and can be beneficial every single person in the world. Today we should start thinking of what is better for all the people in the world including ourselves. Instead of still fighting for something that in 20 or less years will not exist anymore is stupid. We should help each other instead of bringing people to a state that they feel like there is no need for them to live anymore, we need to understand that life is limited and we’re unique. From now on let’s embrace the meaning of life and let’s start helping each other out. One day we should be a free suicide world.

Mentor Article

In my paper I will talk about suicide among celebrities and how they can affect other people lives. Suicide is a serious problem in society with a steady increasing rate each year. This is one of the many reasons I wanted to talk about the issue. My mentor article is written by Quintin Fottrell and the title of the article he wrote is “Studies show suicides increase in the months after a celebrity takes their own life”. In this article Fottrell is using a lot of evidence to show all his points, this is one of the many things I want to get done in my publication too, because that way if you support your thoughts then you’re more likely to be credible. What I would like to avoid is repeating myself, and what I mean is that, sometimes people to make things clear they’ll repeat themselves during their writings, this is what I hate about some writers, so I’ll try my best to make things clear before I start another crucial point in my publication. I think that my article could feet my mentor article because, it will add more details to the main point of both articles with more complex examples and more explanation on the topic I chose. The audience in this case I think should be regarded to everyone in the world because the main point, is that everyone should know about it, so I will not refer to a specific group of people. To engage more and more people to read this article I will try to make the article very easy to understand and also explaining how can the problem be prevented from happening.

In the past year celebrities Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain had ended their lives which has caused a lot of rumor in social media. This means that celebrities are effecting other people when committing suicide. It is important that people understand that we should stop the spread of suicide and once for all end it. Many factors are not helping stopping suicide from happening but instead numbers of people committing suicide are increasing and reasons are unhappy environment, social media and substance abuse.Woo and Postalache states “Behind the curtain of world economy globalization, the occupational environment is delivering increasing stress, such as job insecurity, increasing workload, and the burden of lifelong learning. Larger proportion of employees became involved in service- and knowledge-based industries requiring heavy technological preparedness and mental stress. If the pace of change exceeds the capacity of the workers to cope, negative stress reactions can occur.” Also another statement is  “The relationship between occupational environment and mood disorders seems to be reciprocal, creating vicious cycles in many cases.

Pop Culture Response

I read the article by Hilton Al’s responding to the album “Lemonade” by Beyonce, what came to my mind right after reading the article is that Beyonce wants to show everyone that girls do not need a man to accomplish something in their career. While before reading the article I thought, that the album was going to be about Jay Z being unfaithful to the female singer. Also what I think Beyonce was trying to do in the album was to sort of encourage all females in the world to do more, and not just waiting for other to do so and when bad things happen, just try your best to get over it (Like what she has done after Jay Z cheating on her). What I didn’t understand was why was Beyonce at the end of the video “Formation” sitting on top of a police car. Did she wanted to show a police car to represent the government? This is the only thing I did not understand about the video “Formation”.
