Unit 2 Proposed Topic

My proposed topic for unit 2 is Immigration. Speaking up to be able reform the conditions of facilities where they detain immigrants. I’m hoping to shed light on how inhumane and traumatic family separation is due to being an immigrant, for all parties but most of all for the children involved. I want to try and fight for immigration reform — create a path for citizenship for people already here, update the visa system. I’m Interested in this subject because I think it’s something important to talk about since our nation is made up of immigrants. I also resonate with this topic a lot since my parents were both immigrants when they came into this country. I’ve read and watched documentaries on immigration and heard stories from family and friends that are immigrants, so I know how hard it is to get a visa, I also hear about the facilities being inhumane and parents and children being separated. Some questions I have are, why are “abiding” citizens not able to stay in America? Why are facilities considered inhumane? Why do some kids go into foster care and some into facilities? Why do people want to leave their countries? Why do people seeking immediate asylum for death threats or other serious reasons sometimes not receive it? What’s the process of coming here illegally and legally?

Some of the sources I plan to consult are listed on the bottom.

Speech / Article By: John Lewis

In the congressman’s John Lewis Speech and article, it spoke about what’s going on around the country at this moment. He also spoke about the various changes the country has made since he was younger with the help of himself, among others. He expressed how we as a community should fight for injustice. He mentioned a philosophy he goes by “ If it’s not right, not fair, not just, you have a moral obligation to say something do something you cannot afford to be quiet” By speaking up and getting into something he calls good trouble is the only way things will change. The way he speaks about good trouble is “ Get in trouble and turn our world and our country upside down to set it right side up.” It’s the definition of fighting for everything that is wrong with this country ever injustice, ever atrocity that we’ve seen this year alone, ever abuse of power that must stop. My good trouble would be speaking up to be able reform the conditions of facilities where they detain immigrants. I’m hoping to shed light on how inhumane and traumatic family separation is due to being an immigrant, for all parties but most of all for the children involved. I want to try and fight for immigration reform — create a path for citizenship for people already here, update the visa system.

“where I’m From” Poem

Where I’m from I wake up to the smell of pan dulce y chocolate. That warm smell that always makes me feel at home. Where I’m from the temperature determines how the day will go. The hotter the weather the hotter the block is. Where I’m from every day is a party outside. Where people play loud music until 4am. Where I’m from in Staten island making out the hood is the goal. That sadly not everyone prevails in. Where I’m from you see people working hard to make ends meet. The struggle of having two jobs and not being able to have enough time for anything else but bills. Where I’m from seeing someone getting shot across the street from your house is common. Hearing a mother, father, sibling, or spouse cry outside your window never becomes easier. Where I’m from the system failing you is expected. Where I’m from is not somewhere I want to raise my children. It’s a place I hope to make it out of soon enough.
