The Evolution of Black Graphic Design – JT

The Evolution of Black Graphic Design: Through the Lens of Design Activism

Brief Overview

Throughout American history, art has been a powerful tool to amplify voices for social and political change. Graphic design specifically has played a role in the fight for social justice and civil rights for African-Americans. And in the process African-American graphic design has been revolutionized by such events. This research project will explore the ways in which graphic design activism of the Black Panther Party, Civil Rights Movement, and the Black Lives Matter movement have impacted African-American design in a broad sense, while analyzing parts of my personal design aesthetic. In many cases we see themes of Black empowerment, unity, and self sufficiency at the forefront of design created black designers. These included photographs of party members, printed newspapers, and political campaign posters that would go on to transform design for social – political engagement.

I think your pace was great, it wasn’t too slow or too fast and it allowed your audience to think about what you had just said. I think the way you interpreted the graphics throughout was great and it may have allowed your audience to understand the images differently and more in depth. I think you have a good balance between images and text, neither was overwhelming.

I very much liked the topic of the presentation, I thought it was a very informative one. Due to this I think having that amount of text on the slides was fine, especially when you want to get the important points across. The pace was fine too, it was a good pace to take in all the information you had to present with your VO. I would have used Premiere Pro to fix the small issues with the presentation like the VO volume or to help edit the VO with cuts but other than that I thought the presentation was great.

Your presentation was very professional. You didn’t have too much text and the timing was very perfect with the slides switching and your VO. You said that you want to work more on the timing or spacing but I think it worked out fine, it wasn’t fast or slow.
