At the top of the post copy and paste the following: Celebrating the African-American Practitioners Absent From Way Too Many Classroom Lectures by Madeleine Morley, Eye on Design, 2018, Typography as a Radical Act in an Industry Ever-dominated by White Men by Silas Munro, Eye on Design, 2019, and Design Gets More Diverse by Alice Rawsthorn, NYTimes, 2011.
What stood out to me from the reading was how very little African American designers are known in the design department. In my graphic design history class, I barely learned about any people of color in this field. It was predominately white designers. Also I noticed the gender inequality in the reading as well, Laini Abernathy was the only woman in ‘As, Not For’ and she was also tied with her husband. We could change the commercial design field to include a diversity of voices and visions by not caring about the designers’ race or gender rather than their work. There are a lot of great designers but they aren’t as known as others because of their gender or race. It will definitely change in 20 years since the world is changing slowly and us as the new generation are all trying to make a change, it will be more diverse in communication design field.
