F.T. Marinetti, “Manifesto of Futurism”; Aleksandr Rodchenko, “Who We Are: Manifesto of the Constructivist Group”; and El Lissitzky, “Our Book” are found in our main text Graphic Design Theory: Readings From the Field by Helen Armstrong on pages 19-31.

In the reading, many designers had their own ideas and ways of going about how to share them with people. In the reading, the manifestos these designers made, addressed the concepts of authorship by bringing change to the world through their own unique design work. Within the manifestos, it can be said that communication is growing all the time. Whether it’s within art or anything outside of art. In the text, it states,” we rejoice at the new media that technology has placed at our disposal”. With technology can come great discoveries for designers and better communication. Social engagement can bring political engagement. For example when a designer is bringing their work out into society and making connections with people, depending on their message, can bring political engagement, which can create change.

Common views these artists/designers, F.T. Marinetti and Aleksandr Rodchenko, might share with each other is trying to push the boundaries of art and create something totally new or in a way that connects to the people deeper. Since the world is changing, especially with technology, there is more room for ideas. I wouldn’t say they both disagree with one another, but that they went in different directions toward their goal. F.T. Marinetti used books, posters, and flyers to connect to people, while Aleksandr Rodchenko used new technology and mass production to get his message out to the people.

I believe the text that remains relevant for the present is how the designers are trying to make new art that appeals to today’s society. The text states, “They tried to discover untainted visual forms that were fitting for the new modern world.” Creating design work that could easily be seen and understood by the modern world of today. There are various things that can be said to be problematic today for designers. I would say comfortability within their artwork. Some designers are comfortable with staying in their way of doing things and never trying to explore something different. If they don’t experiment and try things to push the boundaries of art, you can stay stuck in the same place as you are in.

The communication process has changed since the 20th century by technology giving designers more ways to reach each other and their audience with their message. Noise and feedback when talking about artwork can mess with the message the designer is trying to send. Noise refers to the type of message being sent to the viewer and that it can get mixed up or misunderstood by the viewer. Feedback is making sure the viewer has received the message and understood it correctly, if not provide some information where the designer can improve and get the message out better. And due to technology, this can be done in a few ways, to improve and make sure the designer’s work is being understood.
