Discussion Week 2: What makes memorable packaging?

Can you think of any other illustrated or designed packaging that you feel connected to? This could be from your childhood, teenage years, or time
as an adult.

Write a Discussion post. For example, “My childhood memories are filled with the images of the friendly and cheerful Keebler Elves for the Fudge Stripes cookies and the Rice Krispies characters, Snap, Crackle, Pop. Perhaps, this connection reflected my early interest in character design in children’s media.”

The designed packaging I feel the most connected to is the packaging on most cereal boxes. I feel nostalgia when looking at those boxes because I remember all of the mascots and designs when I first saw them as a kid. Some examples are Apple Jacks, Froot Loops, Lucky Charms, and Cookie Crisps.

A illustrated design packaging that I feel most connected to would definitely be the back of cereal boxes. No matter what cereal, Corn Flakes, Cheerios, Lucky Charms, Cocoa Puffs.. there was always some sort of game located on the back. I recall trying to solve mazes and crosswords while eating my favorite bowl of cereal at the time, Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes.

I remember when I was younger, I used to get really excited when my mother took me to Mcdonald’s. I was happy to get the Happy Meal as I always recognized the signature smile among the red colored box. It was the best thing ever back in the day and nostalgic now.

The brands that stood out to me as a kid were packages like Trix for kids, fruitloops, and captain crunch. The Trix for kids message and illustration draws the child in with its bright rainbow colors and swirls and also the funny packaging. The animals really dragged me in with their vibrant crazy personalities.

For Chinese people’s childhood, a snack brand called “Wantwant” appeared more often, with the image of a boy-open limbs, left or upward eyes and a heart-shaped tongue. Products include sweet milk, biscuits and other snacks.

The design for this packaging reminds me of the Russian honey bottles that were distributed back in the 80’s. It was friendly and very easy on the eyes. The art style was very free-flowing and it felt very serene, looking at the Bear sitting on a grassy field with a lob of honey in his hands. It almost looks like a story-book setting and the atmosphere is light in color and detailed with its shading.

The illustrated packaging I feel connected to is Chips Ahoy because it was one of my favorite snacks growing up and I find their commercials to be amusing.

  8. Brianna Edwards

Other illustrated/ designed packaging that I connected to as a kid was Warhead. It is a hard candy that is infamous on how sour it is. In middle school, I use to get this candy in speech. Another student and I always challenged each other on who would spit out the candy first.

I think the color arrange can attract people’s attention. I have seem a illustrated packaging in outside of the bottle of tea. That is AriZona Beverages company’s product, green tea. At the package, it show a tree, at the branch of the tree, have some flower bloom.

One brand which incorporates illustration that comes to mind is the Capā€™n Crunch illustration of the old guy with his blue and gold ā€œcaptainā€ hat and uniform and his iconic white mustache. This stands out in my memory because cereal was always a quick go to for breakfast, before dashing off to school. As you walk through the grocery store, there are so many brands that use illustration, but just seeing this character, I can begin to taste the peanut buttery flavor of the cereal.
