This semester, as a class, we read Toni Morrison’s Beloved. Beloved has so many great moments and statements that could make a person think really hard about what was said and themselves. The quote that made me feel a sense of âwowâ was, âItâs not evil, just sadâ, which was said by Sethe. She was telling Paul D that the presence of the house was not of anything evil, just full of sadness. I drew this picture because just like my quote, this picture has a lot of mystery to it. In my picture I wanted to depict the idea of the house not knowing whether it wants to be evil or sad. The idea that Sethe thought she could identify what emotion or feeling the house was carrying was a little unjust to me. Only the house can determine what it wants to feel. When I first read this quote in Beloved I too asked these questions about the house or the presence of the house. Even as the story went on and answered these questions, it only added to my interest of this statement made by Sethe. At times the house would seem sad to Sethe because she didnât want to see her babyâs spirit in a bad way and she knew why the babyâs spirit would be sad. On the other hand if we look at the way the house treated people it was of an evil essence. I used the colors of red and black with the inspiration of the movie Beloved, when Paul D first entered the house it turned red and looking deeper it was black. Black can signify sadness, just like when people go to funerals they wear black, or when someone is filled with sorrow they sit in darkness. Â Red and black are typical colors of evil and sadness. I wrote the numbers 1, 2, and 4 backwards on the house to depict how unorthodox the house seemed to me.

The cat is black with injury an injury to its front leg; making you wonder what happen to the cat, is the cat sad, who made the cat this way and why. When I first read this quote in Beloved I too asked these questions about the house or the presence of the house. Even as the story went on and answered these questions, it only added to my interest of this statement made by Sethe. This picture came to me when I typed in the Google image search engine âItâs not evil, just sadâ. As soon as I seen this photo I felt it instantly described how I felt when reading this.

As she looks around, the voice of Mrs. Petersâ roused her.
âHereâs a bird-cage,â Mrs. Peters said. âDid she have a bird, Mrs. Hale?â
âWhy, I donât know whether she did or notâ She turned to look at the cage Mrs. Peter was holding up, âIâve not been here in so long.â Her guilt starts to rise, the thought of not seeing Mrs. Wright started to haunt her the more she is at the Wrights house. She began to sulk in and let out a huge sigh. âThere was a man round last year selling canaries cheapâbut I donât know if Mrs. Wright took one. Maybe she did. Mrs. Wright used to sing real pretty herselfâ
âSeems kind of funny to think of a bird hereâ Laughed Mrs. Peters. âBut she must have had one–or why would she have a cageâ
âI suppose maybe the cat got it,â She suggested, still sulking in her dreadful thoughts.
âNo, she didnât have a cat. Sheâs got that feeling some people have about catsâbeing afraid of them. When they brought her to our house yesterday, my cat got in the room, and she was real upset and asked me to take it out.â
âMy sister Bessie was like thatâ, laughed Mrs. Hale. She was trying to find any reason to make herself feel at ease about not seeing Mrs. Wright; looking for any connection to feel as though some how her being there now was âbeing thereâ for Mrs. Wright.
With a sudden silence of Mrs. Peter, she turned as asked âWhat wrong?â
âLook at the door,â said Mrs. Peter. âItâs broke. One hinge has been pulled apartâ
She came near to examine it herself and says âLooks as if someone must have beenârough with it.â
As their eyes met–she could tell Mrs. Peters was questioning what has just been discovered. She felt a startled feeling that was mutual to the feeling Mrs. Peter was giving off. All of a sudden a chill ran down her spine which caused her to turn away, she said brusquely:
âIf theyâre going to find any evidence, I wish theyâd be about it. I donât like this placeâ
The guilt started to eat at her again as she says âBut I tell you what I do wish, Mrs. Peters. I wish I had come over sometimes when she was here. I wishâI had.â
âBut of course you were awful busy, Mrs. Hale. Your house — and your children.â
She ignored the comfort Mrs. Peters tried to give her and replied:
âI couldâve come, I stayed away because it werenât cheerful- – and thatâs why I ought to have come. Iâ – – she looked around – – âIâve never liked this place. Maybe because itâs down in a hollow and you donât see the road. I donât know what it is, but itâs a lonesome place, and always was. I wish I had come over to see Minnie Foster sometimes. I can see nowâ– She did not put into words.
âWell, you mustnât reproach yourself,â counseled Mrs. Peters. âSomehow, we just donât see how it is with other folkâs till– something comes upâ
âNot having children makes less work,â she said, after a silence, âbut it makes a quiet house– and Wright out to work all day –and no company when he did come in. Did you know John Wright, Mrs. Peters?â
âNot to know him. Iâve seen him in town. They say he was a good man.â Said Mrs. Peters.
âYes– good, he didnât drink, and kept his word as well as most, I guess, and paid his debts. But he was a hard man, Mrs. Peters. Just to pass the time of day with him –.â She stopped, shivered a little. âLike a raw wind that gets to the bone.â Her eye fell upon the cage on the table before her, and she added, almost bitterly: âI should think she wouldâve wanted a bird!â
Suddenly she leaned forward, looking intently at the cage. âBut what do you sâpose went wrong with it?â
âI donât know,â returned Mrs. Peters; âunless it got sick and died.â
âYou didnât know – – her?â she asked, a gentler note in her voice.
âNot till they brought her yesterday,â said the sheriffs wife.
âShe– come to think of it, she was kind of like a bird herself, real sweet and pretty, but kind of timid and — fluttery. How — she — did — change.â
That held her for a long time. Finally, as if struck with a happy thought and relieved to get back to everyday things, she exclaimed:
âTell you what, Mrs. Peters, why donât you take a quilt in with you? It might take up her mindâ
âWhy, I think thatâs a real nice idea, Mrs. Hale, there couldnât possibly be any objection to that could there? Now just what will I take? I wonder if her patches are in here — and her things.â Said Mrs. Peters.
She and Mrs. Peters turned to the sewing basket.
âHereâs some red,â she said, bringing out a roll of cloth, underneath that was a box. âHere, maybe her scissors are in here–and her things.â She held it up. âWhat a pretty box! Iâll warrant that was something she had a long time ago — when she was a girl.â
She held it in her hand a moment; then, with a little sigh, opened it.
Instantly her hand went to her nose.
âWhy- !â
Mrs. Peters drew nearer – – then turned away.
âThereâs something wrapped up in this piece of silk,â she faltered.
âThis isnât her scissors,â said Mrs. Peters, in a shrinking voice.
Her hand not steady, she raised the piece of silk. âOh, Mrs. Peters!â she cried âItâs-â
Mrs. Peters bent closer and said âItâs the bird.â
âBut, Mrs. Peters!â she cried. âLook at its neck! Itâs all –other side to.â She whispered to herself âDear Lord, who could have done this. Oh, please donât let this be the work of Minnieâ Her thoughts start to race as she went from thinking it was impossible for Mrs. Wright to commit a crime, to maybe she do this horrible crime. Her thoughts were quickly broken by the sudden movement of Mrs. Peters towards the box. She held the box away from her.
The sheriffâs wife again bent closer.
âSomebody wrung its neck,â said Mrs. Peters.
And then again the eyes of the two women met â this time clung together in a look of dawning comprehension, of growing horror. She watched as Mrs. Peters looked from the dead bird to the broken door of the cage. Again their eyes met. And just then there was a sound at the outside door.
âWell ladies,â said the county attorney, as one turning from serious things to little pleasantries, âHave you decided whether she was going to quilt it or knot it?â
âWe think,â began Mrs. Peters in a flurried voice, âthat she was going to — knot it.â
âWell, thatâs very interesting, Iâm sure,â he said tolerantly. He caught sight of the bird-cage. âHas the bird flown?â
âWe think the cat got it,â said she in a voice curiously even.
âIs there a cat?â he asked absently.
She shot a look up at the sheriffâs wife.
âWell, not now,â said Mrs. Peters. âTheyâre superstitious, you know; they leave.â
Mrs. Hale sank into her chair.
âNo sign at all of any one having come in from the outside,â he said to Mrs. Peters, in the manner of continuing an interrupted conversation. âTheir own rope. Now letâs go back upstairs again and go over it, piece by piece. It would have to have been someone who knew just the â.â
The stair door closed behind the men and their voices were lost.
The two women sat motionless, not looking at each other, but as if peering into something and at the same time holding back.
She said âMrs. Peters, what we have discovered doesnât prove anything. We only know that something horrible has happened to that bird.â She starred into space with a deranged look, as though she was trying to convince herself and Mrs. Peters that Mrs. Wright couldnât possibly hurt the bird.
âSo what are you saying? We shouldnât tell the men about what we found?â asked Mrs. Peters.
âIâm saying since we are not sure ourselves, we should just keep it to ourselves.â
Which title sounds better, A Jury of Her Peers or The Evidence that Lies? The short story I have chosen to retell is A Jury of Her Peers by Susan Glaspell. My reasoning for choosing this story mostly relies on the suspense I felt from reading it and the mystery of not knowing whether Mrs. Wright committed the crime or not. Thus, itâs my turn to possibly change the outcome or the thoughts on whether Mrs. Wright is guilty or not. Third person-omniscient narration is used to tell the story of to tell the original version; I will use third person- limited narration to tell my version, The Evidence that Lies, to give more focus on the character who knows Mrs. Wright better than the others, which is Mrs. Hale.
In the original version of A Jury of Her Peers the author tells the story from point of view of knowing it all. She expresses the feelings and views of every character by explaining how a character feels after they have spoken. This allows the readers to see the story from every angle, therefore we can see what each person thinks about Mrs. Wright and the murder of her husband. She portrayed the men as being bias by statements like: âWell, can you beat the women! Held for murder, and worrying about her preserves!ââ, as said by Mr. Peters or âThe young attorney set his lips. âI guess before weâre through with her she may have something more serious than preserves to worry about.ââ Â It can be assumed that they think Mrs. Wright is guilty of murder without gathering all the evidence that will convict her. The technique of using third person- omniscient narration sort of swayed the story in the favor that Mrs. Wright is guilty due to the fact that more people (all the men) thought she was guilty. This differs from my version in the way that the women (mainly Mrs. Hale) point of view is shown more.
In my version, The Evidence that Lies, I chose to use the scene where the women find the bird cage and the dead bird. This scene was important to me because this was the most important evidence that the men missed. The women two pieces of evidence that could have possibly proved Mrs. Wright guilty, gave her motive or suggest that the Wright household was far more complex then everyone thought. I decided to make Mrs. Hale the focus of my third person- limited narration. It was obvious to choose her because she knew Mrs. Wright more than any person that walked into the Wrights home. In my version I used the words âsheâ a lot and âherâ to express that Mrs. Hale was the focus of my narration; with the adding of her feelings and thoughts I gave the story insight on how she felt through this process of looking for evidence.
For my process of editing my scene of the bird cage, I took out any statements from the original version that would talk about how the other characters felt. This was significant for me because my point of doing the retelling was to get away from all the other characters and focus on one. âBut Iâm awful glad you came with me, Mrs. Hale.â Mrs. Peters put the bird cage on the table and sat down. âIt would be lonesome for me â sitting here alone.ââ; in contrast to my version where I made everything about Mrs. Hale. ââI suppose maybe the cat got it,â She suggested, still sulking in her dreadful thoughtsâ. In the original version the statement Mrs. Peters made was in there to show how she felt about coming to the house, but I decide that was not relevant to my version because it was not Mrs. Hale feelings.
The end of my version is close to the end of the original version in the sense that, my version leaves you with a thought of âHow did they prove she was guilty if that evidence wasnât submitted?â In the original version at the end of the story the evidence of the bird and bird cage was withheld from men, which I chose to do with my version. I decide to still keep the same suspense that the original version gave me when I found out the men werenât going to see the bird. My version ended with âSo what are you saying? We shouldnât tell the men about what we found?â asked Mrs. Peters. âIâm saying since we are not sure ourselves, we should just keep it to ourselves.â By having Mrs. Hale tell Mrs. Peters to keep it to themselves I made the ending of my version and the original version give out the same feeling.
When writing my version I didnât want to stray away from the concept of the original version, only because I agreed with the suspenseful route the author took. I just wanted my version to pay more attention to which I thought was the most important character (Mrs. Hale) beside Mrs. Wright. By taking out statements based on the other characters I think really pushed what I was trying to accomplish; just like by the author incorporating the emotions and thoughts of the other characters she was able to let her readers know who felt what. Both versions had the same tone, setting and plot, but Iâd say mines gave Susan Glaspellâs version a run for its money.

$20 reward for bring the slave back
      During our second visit to the BHS my group was asked to focus on two pieces of documentation that had both been written up during the slavery days of America. The first document was a journal kept by John Baxter (of Flatlands, NY). He was a schoolteacher, amanuensis and a successful farmer. He began the diary from 1790 and carried out till 1826. This document gave our group the most trouble because of its lack of focus on the slave named “Taft”. John didn’t have much to say about his slave in the journal. He hadn’t mentioned any physical appearance, behaviors or any special marks. What our group gathered was that Taft (We assume his name was given to him by his slave owner) was a runaway slave who was found a short time later. After being brought back to his owner, John Baxter, the person who gave Taft back to him was rewarded $8 but a few days later Taft was sold to someone called Jacobus Lott for 90 pounds. Some of the daily entries were very cryptic and impossible to piece together. Being so, we used this document to show that if the story was told from the point of view of Setheâs owners this is the process they would have taken to find her.
    The second document was a “reward-if-found” ad in a newspaper depicting a runaway slave. This advertisement was published in Black Code of the State of Louisiana around 1835. The advertisement is very small and in the left side of the ad there is a sketched picture of a woman with a bundle of clothes in her left hand. The ad, being as short as it was, had given clear details of the slave: “Her name is Charlotte…35 years old… woman… scar near mouth… walks with feet pointing outward.. speaks French and English.” The mentioning of the scar near her mouth and her feet pointing outward was necessary so she could be easily noticed.
     Comparing both the documents with the stories we have read “Beloved” and “Runaway Slaves Profile” we can say that running away of the slaves was not the story of only a couple of houses. Slaves used to run due to various reasons, mostly due to torcher and improper management. We don’t have much to compare with John’s journal except we can say that there were more male slaves than female who used to run away. But if we compare the ad from Louisiana with Sethe’s story we can find similarities. First of all both are middle-aged woman. Being that Sethe was a mother, Charlotte should be a mother too. They both had scars and scars are the proof of torcher given to them. John states in the diary that they were hunting for Taft, as the schoolteacher did in “Beloved” for Sethe. When the slaves were found, they were taken back to the owner or jail. John’s diary says that Taft was brought to him, whereas in the newspaper ad the owner puts notice either to bring Taft back to him or to jail. This act is also comparable to Sethe’s story because when she was found she was taken back to jail.
    We thought both articles gave a slight glimpse of what Toni Morrison tried to illustrate in Beloved. Even after the slave is able to get away, they are hunted until they are found. This compares to document one in the sense that the slave, Taft, every move is traced and written to until he is found. Even though Sethe wasn’t found by her owners, this is what she wouldâve had to endure if she was found.
     In Runaway Slaves by John Hope Franklin, the slaves are described by the color of their skin, branding on face and and clothing. In document two, the owner advertised the slave by saying she had a scar on her face, her feet pointed outwards, she speaks two languages and is thirty-five years old. This is very clear description of the slave and relates to the articles that are in the Runaway Slaves story. In the appearance section of Runaway Slaves it says the scars on the slave would show that they were slaves and the owners would recognize them immediately. This is why in document two the owner wrote the slave had a scar by her mouth. As stated in the Runaway Slaves story it was rare for women to run away from their owners but when they did run away they were typical young in age, as the slave was in document two.

How do the men and women read details differently in âA Jury Of Her Peersâ?
Sex, gender, and gender roles play a major part in A Jury of Her Peers in the aspect of how the details in the Wright house are observed by the men and women. Â The men have more an aggressive stand point and the women have an understanding view. Â From reading the story it shows that during the time it was written men saw women as just housekeepers and not women who should think much. The women seemed as though it did not matter what they felt or had to say they wouldnât go against the word of a man. Â In society the gender role of a man is to be tough and less empathetic towards situations and a womenâs role was just the opposite, they have to be soft, timid and sympathetic. These gender roles are the exact ones used in âA Jury of Her Peersâ.
In Susan Glaspellâs âA Jury of her Peersâ the men are more focused on how things should be at home in the perspective that a woman is supposed to keep the house clean and ready for her husband.  When they first entered the house all they could pay attention to was how dirty and unorthodox the house was. âHereâs a nice messâ as said by county attorney, and âDirty towels! Not much of a housekeeper, would you say, ladies?â as said by the sheriff, shows that they focused on the wrong details and based their judgments of Mrs. Wright on her housekeeping skills. The men were blinded by their views of woman which causes them to not understand or want to understand why the house may look in such despair.  Instead of saying to themselves or each other that maybe something was wrong with the marriage as a whole they just figured she was bad at cleaning. The men acted as if the women couldnât possible understand what was going on and that their only job was to get the belongings Mrs. Wright asked for. For example, when Mrs. Hale says âDo you suppose she was going to quilt it or just knot it?â (referring to the quilt) and the sheriff made a mockery of her by throwing his hands up and saying âThey wonder whether she was going to quilt it or just knot it!â in a sarcastic manner. Because the men went to the house with tunnel vision of only looking at where Mr. Wright was killed they didnât see the most important pieces as the women did.
The women looked around the house trying to find clues to say what lead up to the murder. They found all the important pieces because they understand what it is to be a wife and a woman.  Therefore they took the time to see what would make her snap if she is the one who killed Mr. Wright. Mrs. Hale knew the type of person Mrs. Wright was which made her want to look deeper. The women found all the relevant details such as the cage, dead bird, messy quilts and shabby clothing. Gender roles is what made the men and women look at the details differently, the men looked at what wasnât right and the women looked at why these things in the Wright house werenât right.
