                                                                                 Immersion into a New Lifestyle

           Many known stories create a picture of perfect ethics. But there are fewer stories that show the real picture, feelings, emotions, fears, etc. Mostly characters may have exaggerated emotions, it is different from short stories that hit home to those who emerged into a new environment and are forced to nothing but assimilate to a new lifestyle. The short story “Assimilation,” by E.L. Doctorow demonstrates the central characters to be Roman and Jelena. Roman is pictured as a stressed of life Hispanic college student, that works at any vacancy to pay off his college bills and for housing. Roman works as a dishwasher at a restaurant later is promoted to a busboy. Happy about his increase to the wage, he gets an offer from his boss Borislav, of three thousand dollars to marry his relative and make her legal in the United States. This is when we meet the next main character Jelena, a young woman that has the main goal of just moving and becoming legal in the United States. The story progresses to the confusion between someone being satisfied but, committing fraud or following the moral type of life. Ethics are the moral presentations of how society should act, fairly to others. Does that mean people will become apathetic to others or the opposite, is there a reason for any person to sacrifice themselves for someone else? The main conflict of this short story occurs between the two different sides, the morality and self-satisfaction, which characters seem to deal with constantly.

              In the article by John McGowan “Ways of Worldmaking: Hannah Arendt and E.L. Doctorow” the reader may realize the real circumstances that may occur concerning “desolation”– emptiness, which gives a reader an idea of some type of view such as modernity. My goal for this research is to help readers of Doctorow’s work to recognize the prospection of the author and his point of view by including political ethics in the short stories. The closest relation of ethics for “Assimilation,” and central characters’ actions is Virtue ethics. Roman believes it is not moral to have a marriage without love and for money, this is why he would be cautious about his decisions about taking the offer and marrying Jelena, who does not have the same morals. With the two opposing morals of the short story, I can examine the choices that the character had been coming up with throughout.

        E.L Doctorow is known to write short stories that mostly contribute to isolation, immigration, and hard choices, which we accoutered in “Assimilation,” when the characters reach critical point upon choosing what is right for them, follow moral standards or sell yourself. It is important to know the ethics that follow up this short story, it mostly argues upon virtue ethics. An article “ASSIMILATION – E.L. DOCTOROW – MOTIVATION,” by Tim Lepczyk & filed under E. L. Doctorow, Motivation have reviewed the story with;

“It ends with Leon welcoming them in and saying, “Let the war begin.”

For this story to work, the reader has to believe in Ramon.  He’s a simple dreamer type figure.  Taken with a fancy he jumps into situations.  Random interest is his motivation.” This quote is a good example of Ramon being selfless and commits choices from his virtue ethics and beliefs.

“For me, it’s flimsy.  I don’t buy it.  He’s willing to commit fraud; he’s willing to be bought.” (paragraph 5)

            From the beginning, the central character Ramon obviously followed the morality of virtue ethics. As the story progresses further, he convinces Jelena to escape with him to his brother, and they do. Also, Ramon’s brother, Leon, seems to not care about morality and is totally fine with getting money from the Russian family for the arranged marriage, even though he has a criminal record. This type of motivation from Ramon’s surroundings may have been the push factor of agreeing to the offer. This also comes from Ramon being Hispanic immigrant, that works really hard at his job to pay off his and Leon’s bills, he believes that if he chooses to take the money, he will be able to afford everything he owes. As an immigrant, Ramon worked hard to become a citizen and a student. He knows the value of what he has. This type of descriptions of people and their character and moral beliefs seems to be consistent in E.L Doctorow’s stories, especially in the collection of “All the time in the world,” which includes the short story “Assimilation.” A New York Times article by Jess Row “E.L. Doctorow’s stories argues that:

It’s a truism to say that the story as a form is devoted to loneliness and alienation — “people in some sort of contest with the prevailing world,” as Doctorow puts it here — but that may be the best explanation for why these stories so often fail. Doctorow’s novels tend to follow a deductive logic, beginning with the great themes of an era (or simply with a set of historical facts) and then dramatizing them in an interwoven ensemble of characters. Without a substantial dose of irony, short stories don’t work that way; the heavy-handedness of the novelist smashes them flat. As a title, “All the Time in the World” is, in this sense, exactly wrong: these stories never have the breadth and breath — the expansiveness of novelistic time — they need. Which makes this book, as record collectors say, for completists only. (Jess, Paragraph 9)

    The assumption of Ramon selling himself to the Russian family seems to be absurd after this statement, because as we can see that when E.L. Doctorow was writing the short stories his goal was to bring the idea of choice that the characters make in a peak of stress. A hypothesis can be made when Ramon chooses to hide away from the moral standards and follow a different path of his life, this is where the title “Assimilation” can be interpreted. The short story is also a very nice comparison to the story of Romeo and Juliet, even the initials are the same. This can be related to the ending of the story when the choices have been made and ended the same way the story of Romeo and Juliet ended.

        Motivation is the main push factor of Ramon’s and Jelena’s choices in the story. Ramon was willing to follow the moral standard of life when he was becoming attached to Jelena. While Jelena just portrayed a cold shoulder back to Ramon, somewhat is choosing the feminist ethics and going for her boyfriend who she wants to bring from Russia. Later, Jelena changes her ethics and also follows virtue ethics to relate to her new lover, Ramon. In all, the author had a great impact on handling choices that were made by the characters. E.L. Doctorow created a good piece to explain how a real-life story can be related to fiction romance, including hardships and moral ethics.

Optional Prompt-Leviza Murtazayeva

First of all, I want to wish every student and the professor good luck on finishing up the spring semester. Nobody expected us to end up in a world crisis, so it is important to give yourself enough space and time to be comfortable with the surroundings.  My suggestions on keeping a routine are to try to get your schoolwork done as fast as possible and then you can set up a routine for your best fit. For example, you can choose to read a book, watch some shows, cook something healthy, or even go for a run. Even though it sounds like a typical routine, it is really hard to keep with time nowadays when a day passes by really fast. Lastly, hopefully, everyone is still doing well, keeping up their grades and staying safe from the virus.  Sooner or later all of this is going to be over and we will have the same issues going back to our old routines, so try to take things slow but steady! Have a great week.

Research Prospectus

  A short story I chose is titled “Assimilation” by E.L. Doctorow. This story caught my interest mostly because of its clear and up-front information and storytelling. It is a story that shares the life of regular people who may be dealing with legal reasons. Sometimes, in some areas, the story “Assimilation” hits home because I have read the news before about people doing this for a better life. Assimilation is an idea that one is taking in and fully understanding information or ideas that have been proposed by a different area, that can happen in relocation such as moving to a different country. This story was chosen to be my favorite because the story is very familiar to many stories I like to read and that I have read before. The theme and the style of this book have caught my attention since there is dialogue and it helps a reader feel all the emotions the author is expressing through the narrator.

      This story begins with a description of a man who may be Hispanic that works in a restaurant as a dishwashing person. The man’s name is Ramon he was a legal citizen and he had a college education, meanwhile, his Russian boss is an immigrant. Ramon later finds himself being promoted as a busboy. Eventually, the boss asks Ramon if he could marry his Russian relative Jelena so that she can stay legally in the states. Later when Ramon finally goes to Europe to meet his future wife. He finally gets married to her and she is now legal. And she treats him like dirt, she believes that she has no reason to be kind to him. Bad situations happened around them with the help of the Russian family, the couple spent more time, and Ramon learned more about him. Despite her initial attitude, their affection and love for each other grew and they did not want later divorce as they were planning before.

        Ramon is a struggling college student, who works as a dishwashing man, and is one day offered a promotion that changes his life. Ramon seems like a naive and gullible person, he decides to dive into the arranged marriage to make some money in the result. Russian Boss, Borislav, is a very strict and commanding person, he risks a lot of what he has to set up this marriage with his employee. Jelena is very apathetic even though she was the one who needed the legalization to be successfully done.

       The ethics that Ramon seems to follow are mostly normative, such as Utilitarianism and virtue, since he does have his moral about his education and his legalization, even though he is Hispanic and not so wealthy. For the second main character, Borislav mostly follows global ethics, which means that he just follows the morals that are made up for everyone. Jelena has overlapping of normative and feminist ethics. You can make that conclusion when she acts with an attitude towards Ramon, who didn’t do anything. Meanwhile, later giving up the emotions and fall for him truly.

         Over time, trying out many new applications that can especially help me in the current situation and maybe others. My favorite category of application at this moment are aerological such as “Co-star” app. This app allows you to put information about you to get as much as accurate results as possible. It first suggests you enter information like your full name, birth date, birth location, birth time, and other things about you as you try to make an account. You may customize the profile of yours as much as you want to so that you can be satisfied, this is interesting because other astrological applications never allowed you to create an account before, it was mostly temporary and not as customizable for one individual it was broader. The idea of this application is to provide you with a variety of information about your astrological sign, in-depth explanation about your personality and traits that you will acquire, and even your mood for each day. The most interesting thing about it is that the application shows your birth planets, it is the main source for describing your personality traits. Co-Star also allows you to add your friends and compare each other’s traits and how compatible we are as friends. Lastly, the app sends a motivational quote every morning that only applies to you and your day. I have been learning a lot about signs and horoscopes which have always fascinated me through this app, and the most exciting thing is, all of this is free!

Assimilation:Doctorow – Leviza M

Journal 6- Assimilation (short story)

     I chose a story named Assimilation by Doctorow as my favorite story out of all because of its interesting plot. The short story began by introducing a loud and crowded area in a  restaurant that is owned by a character of a story, Borislav.  As well as introducing us to the main character who is named Ramon.  Ramon was working as a dishwasher before he was “upgraded” to a busboy, which made him feel a lot more important as a person. The owner and his friends are seemed to be Slavic with the given explanations and the names of owners. Soon, later, Borislav began to ask for Ramons; documentations, and offering him to flee to Europe and marry his relative so that she can become a legal resident in the United States. Her name was Jelena, and she was about to be Ramon’s wife. The setting of the story alternates between Europe and America, the restaurant, and the houses they live in. The mood or the tone of the main character changed when he begins to ” wrap Borislav” around his finger to make income out the life-risking or lawbreaking favor.

               The plot is set the way that we read the story from a third-person view, it seems as if the author is telling us the story and he is the narrator. The historical theme of this short story is that there were and still many situations like his that occur, where people pretend to love someone and marry them for legal residency, and after that, they divorce. One of the people in the involvement gets a profit out of this. Even though the main character was aimed to pretend to love the woman, after finding out about Jelena, Roman began to fall in love, and it was a real feeling at that time and for sure. The story includes a title as a symbol of getting adjected to something new, especially when you move to a new country, get promoted, or be in charge of something very risky such as law. The reader’s sympathies are manipulated by the way the author described the characters, sometimes the reader will have a growing connection towards Ramon’s actions and sometimes the other characters in the story, by maneuvering the tone and situations or mood of the character. This way the reader may express more sympathy or grow an emotional connection to those characters such as Jelena and Ramon who are struggling thought out.

    Besides the pandemic crisis being a huge problem during this time, I have never thought that escaping the problem in my safe area, home, would be a problem for not only me and many other people in the world, all physically and mentally. The problems I have been facing this month was the inability to go out and be more active. Something about staying home makes me drown in bed and rarely get out, because, there is no apparent reason to do than a routine. This made me gain some weight, really lazy, and sleepy. I don’t like the experience of what I am going through. I feel disorganized and my home does not feel like home at all. Looking back to the days before quarantine, I was a lot more stable and was able to have a good routine and was able to finish everything. Time is a very confusing part of my daily life right now. It seems like I have a great deal of time, simultaneously the time goes by rapidly, without me noticing. Here I am and most other people, at their fourth week of quarantine, attempting to normalized everything around us.

To help myself with the organization of schoolwork, especially. I tape a post-it paper in front of the working area and checklist of all assignments I need to do for the week. I refresh the post-it every weekend and try to keep up with the 5-7 assignments I need to finish by the end of that week. It is really hard to bring in work and everything else into the escape area, but there is no other option to choose from. we have to accept and make it work with what we have.

My Papa’s Waltz Explication essay- Leviza Murtazayeva

Essay 2- Poetry Explication

April 16, 2020

                                                  My Papa’s Waltz Explication essay

           In this line from the poem “My Papa’s Waltz,” by Theodore Roethke, the speaker expresses deep emotion towards his relationship with his father. By using a metaphorical comparison of “you beat time on my head,” the phrase “beat time” means that time is passing by and the father is still beating the speaker or the child with his “palm caked hard by dirt,” suggests that the father is a hard worker, maybe a gardener since hands are caked in dirt. “Caked hard by dirt” suggests that the father is working with his hands and the metaphor “caked” means that the hands are not clean but are fully dirty, touching his child. On the other hand, the use of the word “beat” in this event is unfitting. If this line were truly referring to a dance which is a sign of gentle and romance, a more proper and gentle word to use would be “kept”, as in keeping time and not “beat” or waste time. With the poetry explication terms, we can figure out the deeper meanings behind the poet’s message. The author includes connotation and denotation of words, as well as symbolism, which is the main source of understanding this poem unclear poem. Also, a term like an enjambment was appended to the poem “Then waltzed me off to bed – Still clinging to your shirt.”

            Even though we could see the speaker having a hard time sustaining a good relationship with his father, we can see that he is for sure very calm and does not resist anything that is happening in that event. The speaker suggests and demonstrates his relationship with his father through a poetry term symbolism. The author of this poem uses the term symbolism to straighten up the plot of this poem and to promote the idea that “waltzing” back to bed does not necessarily indicate that the speaker is physically dancing with his father. This may be more of a mental state of the character in the poem. Eventually, the reader may realize in the lines that the speaker is trying to promote that the relationship is not so rough, this may be the reason why in the last stanza the author adds the line with the child clinging to his father’s shirt.

               The lines show a sign that such an event was not pleasing for the speaker, and he felt uncomfortable. The line also connotes that there is abuse present from the drunk father who is being rough with his child. But at the same time, the child seems not to go away from his father but stays connected to him when the speaker adds “still clinging to your shirt.” This strengthens the idea that the relationship between the father and son is at the same time very intense but still, there is a deep connection and love towards each other, since “waltz” is used herein a soft and gentle way. Furthermore, the line that says “Still clinging to your shirt” can be a very powerful demonstration of the love that the son has for his father. The son does not want his father to leave him and clings on to him to stay with him as long as he can before he goes back to bed. This poem is an actual presentation of where an author uses his words to express many different meanings to a reader. The word choice of these two lines brings a reader an idea of the speaker experiencing a great unease and disturbance from his intoxicated father that is rough with him, the author says that ironically because the word choice mostly suggests the opposite of what is happening. Lastly, the two lines of the poem “My Papa’s Waltz” in the last stanza show a lot of symbolism of the relationship between the father and son.

Leviza Murtazayeva~Reflection~

   The idea of staying home for months does not excite in general. But in every circumstance, one should find a bright side to stay positive and upright. I found myself to be a very active individual who always enjoys being on the go. Realizing that the pandemic is no joke to people. I happily decided to hold my family and myself in self-quarantine. Even though I’m still grieving on seeing my friends, I choose to stay home to protect my loved ones in any case scenario and recommend them to do the same. Staying in quarantine was a lot more rough and complicated experience, in the beginning, I even remember catching myself releasing one small tear from all the stress I was experiencing with, especially from school assignments.

      As of right now, quarantine has been going steady for a while. I have enough time to finish all my assignments, plan and organize my tasks and other things as having everything done on time seems to work out for me. Also, I can spend more time with my pet cat, he finally gets enough attention and gets to spend more time playing when everyone is home. There is now a plenty of time to keep up with my hobbies, like drawing, I drew a really cool illustration, of xxxtentacion (music artist) that passed away a few years ago, as a Simpson character. I am very satisfied that I can keep up with a daily morning jogs now that the weather allows me to do so. Lastly, I am happy I am able to spend a value of time with my family, we have never spent so much time together.

Explication of two lines from the poem “My Papa’s Waltz”

The whiskey on your breath

Could make a small boy dizzy;

But I hung on like death:

Such waltzing was not easy.

We romped until the pans

Slid from the kitchen shelf;

My mother’s countenance

Could not unfrown itself.

The hand that held my wrist

Was battered on one knuckle;

At every step you missed

My right ear scraped a buckle.

You beat time on my head

With a palm caked hard by dirt,

Then waltzed me off to bed

Still clinging to your shirt.

Quote: “You beat time on my head

With a palm caked hard by dirt,

Then waltzed me off to bed

Still clinging to your shirt.”

Explication: In this line from the poem “My Papa’s Waltz,” by Theodore Roethke, the speaker expresses deep emotion towards his relationship with his father. If this line were truly referring to a dance which is a sign of gentle and romance, a more proper and gentle word to use would be “kept”, as in keeping time rather than “beat” or waste time.

The lines show a sign that such an event was not pleasing for the speaker and he felt uncomfortable. The line also connotes that there is abuse present from the drunk father who is being rough with his child. But at the same time, the child seems not to go away from his father but stays connected to him when the speaker adds “still clinging to your shirt.” This strengthens the idea that the relationship between the father and son is at the same time very intense but still, there is a deep connection and love towards each other, since “waltz” is used herein a soft and gentle manner. The word choice of these two lines brings a reader an idea of the speaker experiencing a great unease and disturbance from his intoxicated father that is rough with him, the author expresses that is an ironic way because the word choice mostly suggests the opposite of what it is happening.
