2019 Student Scholarship Awards

This spring, the ASCE Met Section will be awarding $5,000 scholarships. Recipients must be active ASCE student chapter members or high school seniors enrolled in an accredited civil engineering program. Students must attend (or be registered to attend) a college in the Met Section (NYC, Long Island, and the Lower Hudson Valley) or be the child of a Met Section member.

Additional details about the scholarships, including copies of the application forms and a list of past recipients are provided on the ASCE Met Section website: www.ascemetsection.org/scholarships.

The deadline for applications is on February 28, 2018.

May 28 – June 3, 2019

DEADLINE March 1, 2019

New Leaders will take part in training sessions, experiential workshops and field trips to help them explore and develop their own leadership capacity.
Students will receive an introduction to the women’s rights movement, politics and policy making, campaign and community organizing, coalition building in diverse and global communities, and advocacy skills. Networking, mentoring opportunities and special events will also take place throughout the week.
New Leaders will receive a Certificate of Achievement upon successful completion of the program and are encouraged to implement a project back on their home campus or community for which they can receive a mini-grant from the Center for Women in Government & Civil Society.

Eligibility and Application Process
The program is open to undergraduate students (or recent graduates) enrolled in any New York State college of university AND to all New York State residents who are enrolled as undergraduates in out-of-state schools.
Applicants should demonstrate interest and experience in developing leadership skills and are expected to have at least 3.0 GPA. Under certain circumstances, applicants with GPA below 3.0 will be considered, however, they must provide strong justification for why they should be considered.
The program is provided free of charge to all participants. Housing, meals and parking permits at the University at Albany are also provided free of charge to participants. (Travel expenses of applicants to and from the institute site are not reimbursed.)
Applications and all supporting documents must be submitted to the Center for Women in Government and Civil Society. All materials must be postmarked or received via email by March 1st, 2019.
Those chosen as finalist to attend NEW Leadership™ New York Summer Institute conference will be notified shortly after.

Company Description: Engineering for Kids introduces kids, ages 4-14, to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education through after-school programs, in-school classes, camps and workshops all aimed at developing problem-solving skills.

Job Description:

Position: Part Time Instructor- Thursday

Functions:
• Be familiar and able to teach the provided curriculum by the time class starts.
• Lead classroom in required curriculum without any assistance. Classroom size of at most 24 students at different age group. Age group is divided by Junior class (4 – 6 years old) and Senior class (6 – 13 years old). Class runs about 1 – 1.5 hours in 6-weeks, 8-weeks, 10-weeks, 12-weeks sessions.
• Responsible for preparing a suitable learning environment for students, supplying class with necessary materials and setting up classroom equipment. All lessons are project based and require students to be hands on. Require 15 – 30 minutes of prep time before the start of class and 15 – 30 minutes of clean up at end of class.
• Be able to communicate with parents, directors, principles.
• Participate in special events such as workshops, training, etc. Travel to site, school, camps, festival, events, parties, etc. are at personal expense.
Qualifications:
• Experience with LEGO® Robotics is a plus.
• Experience with Scratch program is a plus.
• Experience with Makey Makey & littleBits is a plus.
• Background in engineering, science, or teaching/child care is a plus.
• Must be flexible and dependable to work on Thursdays from 2:30PM – 5:30PM.
• Must be able to travel to Manhattan.
Compensations:
$15-20 per hour of teaching class.

2019-20 AISC Scholarship Application Now Open!

AISC Scholarships: More Than $138,000 To Be Awarded

AISC (American Institute of Steel Construction ), with funding from members of the steel construction community, will award more than $138,000 in student scholarships for the 2019-20 academic year. New this year, architecture majors are eligible for a select number of AISC Scholarships funded by the AISC Education Foundation.

The application for the 2019-20 AISC Scholarships program can be accessed through our scholarships website. The deadline to apply is May 1, 2019. Winners will be announced in August.

AISES Summer Internship Program 2019

AISES Summer Internships
Application Deadline: February 15, 2019

The AISES(American Indian Science and Engineering Society) Internship Program provides students with applied work experience and an opportunity to explore career options. Placing students in 10-week summer positions with partner agencies, the program also promotes advanced study to the graduate level and assists students in developing professional networks.

Open Internships: 

  • BMM Test Labs Internship
    Due Date: February 15, 2019

One or two positions are available with AISES partner, BMM Test Labs. The internships will be located in Las Vegas, NV. The Intern will assist test engineers as part of a team responsible for: assessing gaming technology integrity, accountability and functionality; performing statistical analysis of gaming device and game probabilities; reviewing gaming device and system source code and assisting with the development of testing procedures.

  • Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) Internships
    Due Date: February 15, 2019

Three positions are available with AISES partner, Bonneville Power Administration (BPA). Two positions will be available in BPA’s Transmission Services in Vancouver, WA and another position will be open in BPA’s Fish & Wildlife Program at the BPA Headquarters in Portland, OR. Applicants must be pursuing one the following degrees: Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biology, Environmental, Natural Resources or Wildlife Sciences majors.

  • USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory Internship
    Due Date: February 15, 2019

Two positions are available with AISES partner USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory (FPL), the national wood research laboratory within the U.S. Forest Service. The internship will be located at the city Madison, the Capital of Wisconsin. Interns will work in the Forest Service Products Laboratory and in the field with supervisor. For the Engineering-related position, the focus will be on timber highway bridges, historic covered truss-bridges, and bridge inspection practices. For the Marketing-related position, the focus will be on technology transfer of key research results on tall-wood buildings, cross laminated timber (CLT) products, cellulose Nano-materials that have a significant market impact for the following industries: bio-chemical, bio-energy and bio-products.

ASCE 2019 Mentoring Program Enrollment

College students are invited to join the fifth year of the Younger Member Forum’s Mentoring Program. Mentoring groups will consist of three to four people: a college student(s), intermediate level professional mentor, and senior level professional mentor.

Participating in this program requires a 1.5 hour monthly commitment from March 2019 to December 2019. The kickoff event with all participants will be in March 2019, date and location TBD.

Each monthly meeting will feature a topic, i.e., getting feedback on LinkedIn profiles and resumes, work-life balance, etc. Each quarter, we will gather all of the mentoring groups together at Program Meetings for refreshments and networking.

New for 2019:

•The Mentor Committee has partner with others at the ASCE Met Section Younger Member Forum to offer new engagement events at local high schools to this year’s participants.
•The Mentor Committee has adopted a push to increase the availability of open spots in the program due to demand in recent years.
•This year, we will be offering select social events alongside our normal quarterly Program Meetings.
•We will also commend all participants at the program close with certificate for their time.
•The Younger Member Forum will also promote the program to our members on social media, newsletters and through sharing audio of our discussions.

Cross Management Corporation is looking for an entry level hire for an Assistant PM / Super position, preferably someone with some construction experience or had an internship at a construction company. There initial responsibilities would be mostly the paper side of construction (submittals, change orders, estimating, etc.) plus filling in for Supers on vacation, for after hours testing, small night projects, etc.

The job would start at $20 an hour (negotiable based on experience) with benefits and they do pay overtime. The most important thing is that they are knowledgeable, ambitious and passionate to grow in the industry. Also looking for experienced PMs, Supers and Estimators.

Speak Up, Speak Out: A Youth Summit on Policing in New York City

On February 26, 2019, the Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) in conjunction with NYU McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy & Research and the NYU Law Center on Race, Inequality & the Law, is hosting their first-ever youth summit at New York University Kimmel Center, Rosenthal Pavilion, 60 Washington Square South, New York, NY 10012.

This gathering is an opportunity for young people ages 10-24 from across New York City to directly share their experiences with policing, identify problems in their communities, and recommend solutions to public safety and police oversight practitioners and academics. The insights shared by participants from this event will inform CCRB’s 2019 report on youth, which will be released later that year.

This event is free and open to the public. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
