For the black surface, I used my couch. For the white, I used paper. The black and white look similar when shot with automatic settings because the camera automatically has a preference to lean towards shades of gray. To get the pictures to be fully black or white, I dragged the exposure to the end of the spectrum before taking the photo, to the bottom for black and to the top for white.
