Time Capsule review

Jacobo Cabrera 11/30/2020

During this semester I learned many things, I learned how to express myself better when writing, I learned how to enjoy writing and not just doing it because I had to, but I think the most important thing that I learned during this semester is that teachers can be extremely helpful, for other classes some of my professors were rude, and I was afraid of asking questions because I witnessed how they would get mad at students for asking questions that seemed meaningless to the professor,  but like I said not all professors are the same and Dr. Papp was one of the most helpful professors I’ve ever had so I am really thankful for that. In my time capsule, I told myself that I hoped that I had found motivation by the end of the semester, sadly I did not, I sometimes get some bursts of motivation but it’s just momentaneous, one day I want to do all the work the next I just want to give up, one thing that I did improve was my writing I stopped saying, to be honest, all the time, that was something that I didn’t like and I have been working on it, I have also been working on not saying “but” all the time, it is difficult because I don’t know how to replace it like I don’t know another word that can replace my precious “but”. One thing that I was hoping to achieve was submitting most of my work, like completing most of it and I did in fact, even though sometimes I felt overwhelmed I still pushed through it, right now with the portfolio and finals coming up I am a bit scared but I don’t wanna feel overwhelmed I already pushed through so many weeks I can’t just give up on the last couple of weeks. My goals were very realistic this is why I feel like I have accomplished most of them, I like to make short-term goals because they are easier and faster to achieve which basically means that I am going to feel rewarded you know. I have set more goals for the future those small goals are one of the only things that motivate me every now and then.

Artist statement

The first time I was introduced to computer games was at the age of 7. I don’t really remember the name of that game, but it was pretty addictive. I wanted to play it every day for at least half an hour. But at that time, it didn’t affect me that much, and I had a good childhood time without pc games. But later on, at the age of 12, I was really into a  game named GTA vice city, where you have to do the works of robbery, theft, killing, etc., to pass the missions. It was so addictive that I would eat, take a shower, and pray late. Sometimes I used to get angry because someone called me while I was playing the game. Right now, I understand how addictive it is for me at that age. Even at this age, I get addicted to certain games once I start playing for a while.  From that understanding point, I really want to talk about consuming our valuable time and changing our way of thinking. Especially kids and teens as their brain is absorbing more and more ideas at that age. I want to talk about how some people are being left out, and to pass their time and socialize; they put themselves into violent games and many other ways to remove their boredom and isolation. It has been seen in many shooters that they were being left out, abused and to fill that up, they get themselves into violent games, and from that, they get emotionally triggered.  Later they do what they see in their game. It’s like a “monkey sees, monkey do’. To keep me away from games, I try to work on different skills like photography, Adobe illustrator designing, video editing, etc. Besides that, the amount of study I get from college really doesn’t get time for playing games, which is a positive side.  I would tell many people when they get to college, their gaming time reduces significantly.  Some still make time after college and play a good amount of time. If I could keep this up, I don’t have to worry about getting addicted to video games and not wasting my valuable time. Talking about this topic mostly inspires when one of my uncles showed me a video of a boy who killed his whole family, and when the police got there, he was playing a game. That really made me angry. He lost his mind and couldn’t comprehend reality and virtual life playing that game called Halo 3. I really don’t like it when this type of people don’t care about what is happening around the world and putting their heart and soul in something that will probably bring no good to them. I want to talk about why this is happening to us and how we can prevent it.

Final Artist Statement- Frida

I was very proud of the video I made. I believe I covered up the three main topics I wanted to discuss. These topics were people, food, and history. I discussed how these three things all related to the importance and representation of Mexican culture. I also included some differences when it came to American and Mexican culture. Their foods are completely different from each other. I wanted the audience to know that just because American produced food is influenced by Mexican culture doesn’t mean it tastes the same as authentic and hand made Mexican food. I feel like I did really well in catching the viewer’s attention at the beginning of the video when I asked “When you think about traveling, what places come to mind?”. The normal answer would be cities like Paris, London, and New York. When it came to famous places known for its beaches, many people automatically think of Mexico and Cancun. I won’t deny Cancun is beautiful and a great vacation spot. However, there is so much more to this country than crystal clear beaches. As I mentioned in the video, it is important to understand the culture, history, and overall background of this country. It will make people’s traveling experience much more enjoyable. This also applies to the cities I previously mentioned. It is interesting to learn new things about a different country because it opens up your mind to the world and other things you probably weren’t aware of before. Everyone grows up differently and learning about other people’s lifestyles and cultures can help you out when you decide to travel somewhere else. Some countries have similar traditions and backgrounds. Once you have knowledge of understanding another culture, even people within that country will respect you. My goal remains the same. That is to make the audience do a little research of their own before visiting a country. I want people to understand that visiting the most popular area in that country doesn’t make you an expert. One thing I could’ve done differently is simply discussed the differences between Mexico and the United States. The reason didn’t do this was because I believe it is important to have a purpose in visiting a country. It’s obvious that these two countries have nothing in common. I didn’t want my project to be based on comparisons. I intended to make this video about curiosity and educate the audience on the things they should keep in mind before visiting a country. Overall, I enjoyed creating this short film about traveling specifically in Mexico. One thing I struggled with was trying to find clips that matched what I was talking about, but it all worked out in the end. I used a mix of photos and videos to get my point across. In the video, I also included a voiceover of me explaining everything. I hope this film is useful to future travelers who are curious and passionate about traveling like myself. Also intrigued by learning something new.
