Personally, my view of online learning is that it’s very stressful. And there are many disadvantages and difficulties I had to deal with in high school. A major difficulty I dealt with in school was staying motivated and that was to do synchronous and asynchronous work. For example, I’m doing school at my house and me being at home means I could do whatever I want because they’re are literally infinite distractions such as the television ,the game console, & there’s my bed where I could literally just close my laptop or leave it on and fall asleep mid-teaching. And that could just be because I’m a lazy fellow but I know for a fact I wouldn’t get as distracted if it were in person learning. Some of the other hardships of online school is staying in contact with my teachers and getting the immediate feedback I would want to receive. For example if I forget or don’t know my teacher’s email it would be very hard to contact him/her and that’s a real disadvantage when needing someone to talk to about school and even personal stuff for that matter.
The pandemic in general was really the biggest hardship for me. I say that because there was a point where people weren’t really allowed to leave the house because of a virus that killed thousands when I really sat and thought to myself it was actually very scary and sounds like something you would see on a television show. All the time stuck in the house was really hard on me and it really psyched me out because I was just overthinking about a lot of stuff. All that time just overthinking I think it led to me getting or having something called depersonalization / derealization disorder which is basically where you feel detached from yourself and the world around you. I’ve only told about 2 or 3 people about it because I didn’t even really understand how I was feeling and i didn’t want anyone to look at me differently. But there was one day during the pandemic where I decided to search up how I was feeling because why not YouTube has everything. I guess it could help me find out why I’m feeling. And so I ended up finding a video on it and I related to it a lot and I went to the comments and it made me feel a lot better that I wasn’t the only person in the world feeling this way. Thankfully the world has some what open up and you are more free to do as you please because the lockdown was very bad for my mental and i’m not a person to open up or tell another person what i’m going through because I believe I could do everything by myself and get through anything by myself & I know that’s not a good trait to have but that’s just who I am as a person. Therefore I hate online school and I very much prefer in-person learning but I could understand that most teachers would rather not go back to the building ,I think there should be a class poll on whether there should be remote or in person learning.
Wow Jaheim, I feel for you. This pandemic has created a mental heath crisis for everyone and for our young people especially. I am glad you found that other people feel the same way and that you are not alone. And hey everyone used You-Tube in this time — even me!
You do a good job of developing your ideas. Your way of describing and detailing your feelings and your “lazy fellow” atitude makes me sympathize with you, even though I am on the other side as a teacher who is demanding so much out of the students! This online learning environment has many many challenges for students and teachers. Maybe you would like to research more about how the pandemic has changed the way learn in school or how the pandemic has affected young people’s mental health. These are big topics and there is a lot of information written in newspapers. We will do a research project and you might keep these possibiliies in mind.
