Thanksgiving from Hell: Holodets Beef

Its been over a week since Thanksgiving and this left-over-monster of a meal is still haunting me! For the last food first post, I decided to step way out of my comfort zone and try out this Russian delicacy called Holodets Beef.

What looks like the cross between pan sediment from a turkey and a prank involving jello, holodets beef first start with a gelatin made from a meat stock or consomme and filled with savory ingredients, such as eggs, meats, or fish.  While the dish was flavorful, the gelatin layer was too rich and I could not get pass the shock of the dish itself. In Russian, or in Brighton Beach, I’m sure this dish separates the men from the boys; the women from the girls. Yet, here I am, struggling to finish my meal before I could excuse myself from the little kids table.
