Unit 2 – Final Draft

Female Mogul

There are a couple of things I admire more than women standing up for themselves. One of them is having the ability to determine their own choices and encouraging self-worth in other women. Being able to show the world your many talents is a beautiful thing, but also supporting other women to do the same is an inspiring act. Women empowerment is very important and a strong force that the world needs, especially in the music industry.

The rap game has never had a female mogul since 2009. Nicki Minaj is the queen of versatility and undeniably talented. As the reporter, Vanessa Grigoriadis, from the New York Times Magazine stated, “Minaj has become an expert at modeling the ways that women can wield power in the industry. But she has also drawn attention to how power can be embodied by a woman standing up for herself and speaking her mind.” In the statement, Grigoriadis expresses one of the many impacts Nicki Minaj has asserted in the world; aside from being lyrically gifted, she emphasizes the significance of power in womanhood. Grigoriadis is accurate and we’ve seen in many events where Nicki Minaj has spoken and showed the importance of gender roles in the public eye, especially in the music industry. Furthermore, she’s always persuaded women to be ambitious, never depend on a man, and always work for themselves. Nicki Minaj has taught young girls and young women to stay in school and never give up on their dreams. In addition, she carries this advice throughout the work that she provides to her fanbase and listeners.

An undeniable skill we’ve never seen before always intrigues us, especially in music, specifically Rap and Hip-Hop. Skills such as rapping the fastest, switching up flows in one verse, and even the important word choice. Rap/ Hip-Hop has developed throughout the 90s, early 2000s, and present days. When we listen to rap music, it’s usually a male artist. If we’re asked who’s our favorite rapper, we mainly think of a male rapper. Since 2009, there hasn’t been a female leader or mogul in the rap industry. Nicki Minaj has the longevity of the highest-selling female rapper. Because we’re so used to males “dominating” the music industry, I find it supreme that Minaj has changed that perspective and showed the world that women can also be dominant. She has proved her talent through the work she puts out to the world like being versatile and working with artists of different genres such as Latin, country, and pop. Not only has she featured on many male artists’ songs and impressively showed her lyrical strength, but Minaj also influences women and young girls to go after what they want and to never depend on anyone, especially a man.

In this interview with TIME, Nicki Minaj opens up about her life as a celebrity, the importance of being a boss as a woman, and being unapologetic in her career. Aside from the interviews, Nicki Minaj expresses her talent and addresses her accomplishments as a female rapper and woman in the Rap/Hip-Hop industry. In her most iconic verse in the song “Monster” with the three most legendary male rappers, Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Rick Ross, Minaj raps “You can be the king, but watch the queen conquer.” She wants us to know queens are just as powerful and important as kings. In her case, she is just as capable as the males in the rap game. In another song from her Pink Print album, “Want Some More,” she raps “You seen that list? It was me, Baby, Jay-Z, and Diddy.” The list she refers to is the Hip Hop Cash Kings where she was placed as the #4 top earner, making her the first female rapper on the list.

Unit 2: Final Draft

Contemporary skincare ingredients and practices date back to antiquity?

By Salomee Khawja

Fungal acne was the bane of Yosef Aydin’s existence as it would emerge periodically but never fully went away.

“I tried all sorts of medications and lotions, but nothing seemed to work,” Yosef, a New York City high schooler, told me. “However, a miracle came by when my grandmother told me her ancient secret, honey. I hadn’t known that my ideal skin was waiting for me in the cabinet.”

Throughout the world, innovations have led Man to resort to Mother Nature’s raw elements. Not only honey but most of our health and wellness antidotes have been more accessible than we have contemplated.

Honey, nature’s most decadent creation, not only is ambrosial, it’s a powerful antioxidant and healer. It’s been used in skin care regimens and treasured for its curative and beautifying properties ever since the dawn of knowledge. Archeologists found that honey was the predominant ingredient in recipes for healing ointments in ancient Sumerian clay tablets.

The word goes around that Cleopatra used to bathe regularly in milk. After all, milk contains lactic acid which helps to gently buff away dead skin cells.

Furthermore, during the Ming dynasty in China, women used rice water to clear away imperfections and inhibit aging. This practice flourished due to the abundance of enzymes, amino acids, and antioxidants in rice.

All in all, skincare has been present for a long time in history, it just has a new name.

Skincare may be the trending cure for beautification, wellness, and health today but truth be told it shouldn’t be novel. Unfortunately, with millennia of knowledge shrouded, many are unaware that this practice has been around since the beginning of time. Furthermore, a substantial amount of ingredients found in contemporary skincare products dates back to antiquity. It’s invigorating to recognize that events of the past continue to prosper, and nothing is ever lost.

Living on Earth: The Beekeepers of Ancient Egypt

Ebers Papyrus

To begin with, one of the first practices of beautification was by the Egyptians, who valued and treasured honey in their medicinal and curative approaches. In the article entitled, “Secrets of the Mummy’s Medicine Chest”, James Peter Allen, an American Egyptologist, asserts “the ancients treated broken arms, cuts, even facial wrinkles […] and they used methods as advanced as rudimentary surgery and a sort of proto-antibiotics.” (PĂ©rez-Peña, 2) Although they didn’t have laboratories or research-based knowledge, they were well-equipped in handling such procedures. In fact, when the 4,000-year-old Egyptian papyrus (also known as the Ebers Papyrus) was found, it offered a depth of wisdom and was anointed as the world’s oldest known medical treatise. According to Allen, who also translated the papyrus, the Egyptians theorized and came to know profoundly about the functions of human anatomy and its cure, though they did not always comprehend it. As per, many of the recipes advise using honey, an antibacterial humectant, in conjunction with willow bark on open wounds, a natural painkiller that is chemically similar to aspirin that can help inflammation. Despite not knowing what bacteria was, they still used herbs and natural remedies to fight it off. Perhaps the most remarkable thing about this is that the practice hasn’t been forgone. Honey is still present in contemporary medicine and skincare products. Moreover, willow bark, known today as salicylic acid, is a common ingredient in modern-day skincare that helps with the alleviation of acne and irritation.  On the whole, it’s heartening to acknowledge that years of insight have withstood the test of time.

According to Dr. Alan M. Dattner, a Westchester County dermatologist, many of the colleagues whom he has worked with, recommend their patients’ medications as well as natural approaches to treat their skin. They assert that both approaches are equally significant and useful. In the article entitled, “With Herbs, a ‘Fuller Palette’ for Skin Care”, Dr. Dattner, remarks, “the traditional practice of topically treating dermatological conditions with plant-derived medicines predates the cultures of ancient Egypt and remains vital today.” (Jackson, 5) For example, psoriasis is a condition that causes a person’s skin to become red, itchy, and scaly. This skin disease is often treated with topical steroids, ointments, and sometimes with laser for severe cases. Yet, aloe vera, a standard beauty and health component used to soothe and heal the skin is a great alternative to these approaches. In a clinical study that consisted of patients with slight to moderate psoriasis, patients reported having felt better and were satisfied by the effects of applying aloe vera as a topical treatment. Unsurprisingly, the use of aloe vera was also found written on an uncovered papyrus, describing the plant as “the plant of immortality”. It was named by the pharaoh as the “elixir of eternal life”. It is said that Cleopatra used aloe vera on a daily basis.

Assyrian Medical Tablet

Traditions as such are passed down by generations. Our innovations and knowledge have thrived because of our ancestors’ understanding and wisdom. Although we do not continue the archaic practices of our ancestors, it’s interesting to hear the legends of their time. In the article entitled “The Use of Plants in Skin-Care Products, Cosmetics and Fragrances: Past and Present” issued in the Cosmetics Journal 2018, “five thousand years before, the Sumerians, Assyrians, and Babylonians removed skin devils with mud, [ointment, bandages], and plants such as castor oil, anise, cinnamon, myrrh, and mustard.”(GonzĂĄlez-Minero, 1) In modern-day cosmetic engineering, these ingredients are formulated in various skincare and beauty products. However, nowadays people have access to options such as topical steroids, chemical exfoliants, prescription medication, and over-the-counter lotions and serums. On the surface, it seemed to be peculiar and an odd procedure of beautification. Coming from Assyrian descent, I found this statement bizarre yet amusing. Part of me couldn’t believe the information, so I questioned my grandmother to lessen my doubts.

“We didn’t have the products made today, but we tried everything to look our finest; well, some of us did,” she laughed.

“Myrhh was favored and helpful in reducing irritations all over the body. Your mom frequently got rashes, so I’d apply it to her skin, and after a while, she’d feel better. Pearl powder was another great element we used; it kept us looking youthful and fresh.”

When I asked her if she’d return to such practices, she answered no.

“With the abundance of inventions coming out these days, there is no need to go back to these methods. Simply remembering these methods keeps the practice alive.”

The experience of learning the approaches to beautification through someone of an older time is riveting. It’s a reminder that nothing is ever lost in the past. As long as we have memories of the past, the past lives on.

Contemporary Skincare Routine

At the end of the day, Man has come a long way with research and knowledge. Today we attain a plethora of resources to treat our conditions. So go forth, and use all the incredible skincare products you keep on your shelves. We do not need to regress to old practices, although one can if they desire to. Yet, the alikeness and resemblance of today’s approach to those done in antiquity is a reminder that we remain connected with our predecessors. While skincare is the new beauty trend and wellness movement, one should know that mother Earth initiated it at the beginning of time. Everything we know and attain today is granted due to the years of knowledge of the past. By good fortune, years of knowledge and practices have withstood with time. The parallels found in medicine and health open doors to much more information that is left to be found by intellectuals of the past.

The past dictates the future and the present is in flux.

Have you ever just taken a look at how far we have come and developed as a society? There have been so many changes and ways of life that slowly changed. For example, there are so many different ways to make money now unlike before because now there is so much social media where people use it as a job or people who invest in the stock market as a job. Now there are NFT where people draw digital art of something that can be something like an animal. The most common image being drawn is a unique looking monkey with unique features such as wearing sunshades or a headband or even to wearing chains.  It may seem silly to you at first why this is even a thing honestly and it can still sound silly even if you are informed about NFTs.

NFT stands for nonfungible token and the term fungible means exchanging something of the same kind such as a dollar bill or coins. Things that are non fungible can be things such as a car or a house someone exclusively owns because of their unique characteristics. “If it helps, you can think of NFTs as like the certificate of authenticity you might get if you bought an expensive sculpture. This basically means you have a claim of ownership, where you are considered the original owner and copy. There are people who can copy the file, but they do not have a certificate saying that it is authentic to them. It is the same as a robber breaking into someone’s house and stealing it, but you have a certificate claiming that you are the original owner.

A note to take with you is that it is not that simple to get started and just start selling or buying NFTs that easily. To get started, you will need to buy crypto in order to start being able to even make money from your NFT. The most common crypto currency used to get started is Ethereum but there are other forms that can be used. There are also many apps that allow you to set up a wallet or account to buy or sell your crypto. Then you will set up the wallet information to have the money come in if you were to sell an NFT. Something else to also note is that since you need to by something like Ethereum, Ethereum has gone up a lot more than before which was from around 1 thousand to around 5 thousand dollars, so it can be a little tricky to get started if you are new and trying to save so many can look at it as like some sort of gamble but you have a choice so you should also be cautious and aware of your decisions and what your doing because it can be dangerous to do if you are careless and can cause many issues on your financial situations that you may have to deal with. There are many fake people out there who will try to sell you fake NFTs. Many people will try to get you to buy something fake so it is very important to pay close attention to the details. There are many platforms that can be used to make and sell NFTs.

The steps to actually making an NFT is uploading a file of the NFT you are looking for or trying to sell which is a digital file and it cannot be hand drawn. Now there are different ways in actually selling your NFT. You have an option to set a set price where there is only one offer and if it is sold, you get the instant amount of money. You also have the option to have an auction and you can set this auction to a certain time where they can be sold or bided on for a time to another time chosen by you. The last option is giving a certain buyer access to the NFT through a secret link, and this is usually done based on how confident you are with your NFT because you are giving them a full copy of the NFT with a nice resolution to see the details thoroughly. You can also add a description to your NFT and this will allow you to provide a little description on what the buyer might like out of it and can help sell your NFT faster. Something you may want to know is when your NFT is bought, there is a fee and a commission fee you have to pay out of the wallet you set up. These are small things that are important but not many people talk about it and they don’t show you how many things go into selling or buying NFTs. It is honestly a risk you can take with uncertain outcomes but there may also be benefits if you are confident and aware of what you are doing, or have a plan or make it a situation where it will not have a huge effect on someone. Another thing to note is that any sort of digital file can be counted as an NFT.

There have also been many situations where creators or artist or other social media influencers have scammed people to buying their products like crypto, etc., so it is important to watch out for that because it can be misleading and a huge risk you might be taking and some of them have been caught and called out on. There is so much false information being spread on the internet that you do not know what is true or not and there can be so much information that is misleading that can actually have a huge effect on a huge amount of people and actually potentially ruin their lives because of listening to false information being spread around. There was a time where I invested money into the stock market because I saw some guy on twitter talk about it how it was going to increase a lot and it turned out he was wrong which caused me and a lot of other people to lose money if they listened so I was apart of that problem that was going on with social media influencers going around or people on the internet spreading misleading and false information. If there was someone out there who was so confident and put a lot of money in because they believed him, it would ruin that person’s situation insanely much.

NFT is a new thing that has not come out too long ago so we may see many things to change and new ways things will be done so it is only a matter of time where we will be seeing something new that will happen over time. There are obviously things that will still happen and won’t change which is sad but if you are smart about it and doing things based on your own research and thoughts and you are very confident in it, then it could be very useful and impactful. There are many risks and factors that go into NFT but if you are up for the challenge, then it is up to you. Everything is dependent on how you handle the situation and what you want to deal with and it is important that you need to just be cautious about what you actually want to do when selling or buying an NFT and listening to information that is going around.
