For the author portrait I tried to use a soft front lighting set up.
For the editorial photo I used low lighting to create dramatic shadows.

Love the author photo. Front light is universally flattering and crossed arms with one shoulder forward is a terrific pose for this context. Next time, you might want to try Rembrandt light to add a bit of character.
