Jose Antonio Vargas

Antonio Vargas wrote this article to shed light on the issue that many undocumented people in the U.S. are faced with today. Vargas also wrote this article to liberate himself from the feeling of being hidden behind these lies constructed. Even though he deserves citizenship just as much as any American, the eyes of the law see something different. His hard work and determination to become an American citizen is the true definition of what an American means, so I applaud Vargas for his courage. Vargas faced many challenges throughout his life in America. As coming out as a gay man in his family, his grandfather was unsupportive of this. He also faced the possibility of being uncovered as an undocumented person in America every instance he needed to verify his identification. Searching for jobs was a troubling sport, not because of the work, but because of the fact he had fake papers. Vargas never truly overcame his challenges throughout the article, but rather, dodging them as almost getting hit by a car crossing the street.

Dear Lorenzo, Thank you for your very thoughtful response. I think you do a great job of describing his purpose for writing the article and for describing his courage. I particularly like this section: “Antonio Vargas wrote this article to shed light on the issue that many undocumented people in the U.S. are faced with today.
