Mother Tongue, by Amy tan

Amy tan describes the different englishes she uses as proper and correct english. Amy has never used this type pf english in front of her mom which is why she was a little shy but she stated it as “standard english”. When Amy says mother tongue she means that way her mother speaks such as the way she uses her dialect. Her mother has trouble speaking english but to Amy she dosen’t see the difference through out her life she gets to understand her mom is going through this struggle and as Amy grows up she learns to see her mom as normal. When Amy was younger her perspective of her mom was that she was ashamed of her mom because as stated in the text ” I believed her english reflected the quality of what she had to say”. This is basically stating that Amy felt since her mom couldn’t speak properly it was cause her ideas were imperfect. This changes over time because Amy starts to understand that the way her mother talks is just who she is and it becomes natural to Amy. I feel Amy wrote this article for the people going through the same struggle as her mother did because she wants us to be aware of the every day problems people who are immigrants or english second language people have to face in society. when i speak to my boss at my job i come very proper because its a professional job so i need to act professional in that job setting. Another instance is when im talking to my friends i use slag because that how me and my friends talk but i would never use that type of language with my teachers because again it determines the person you talking too as well as were u are at.

Dear Elijah, I really like how you describe the challenges that Tan faced between her use of “Standard English” and the “English” she spoke with her mother. You do a great job describing her shifting perspective. I also like how you describe the many different forms of English that you use in your daily life, “when i speak to my boss at my job i come very proper because its a professional job so i need to act professional in that job setting. Another instance is when im talking to my friends i use slag because that how me and my friends talk but i would never use that type of language with my teachers because again it determines the person you talking too as well as were u are at.” Thanks!
