Alumni News – Joniel Thomas, Asst. Team Leader at WSP

Joniel Thomas, previously Edwards, City Tech Civil Engineering Technology AAS class of 2018, has worked as an Assistant Consultant, Structural Engineer at WSP USA for three years. Currently, she is working on two projects while serving as the North-East I&D Co-Lead: the Bridge Inventory 2021-2024 Biennial & Interim Inspection Services for Region 8 ($30M project) and the Gowanus Expressway Interchange Region 11 ($15M project). As the NE I&D Co-Lead, she has curated and implemented partnerships with STEM-focused High schools and ASCE to offer students mentorship, internships, and unique opportunities, exposing them to careers within STEM. Her efforts recently aided WSP USA in being the ACEC NY DEIB Award Winner in 2022. Since then, offices in Texas and Philadelphia have implemented her initiatives. Joniel is currently working towards her Business Degree in Leadership and Management with a concentration in International Business and Global Management Studies at NYU.

Job Opportunity – H&H Bridge Inspection

All New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Architectural/Engineering Consultant contracts have a provision for a Training Program. The purpose of this program is to provide viable career opportunities for minorities and women or other qualified candidates for employment in the engineering consultant industry.

Hardesty & Hanover, LLC (H&H) is currently working for NYSDOT to provide bridge inspection services in the Bronx. They are looking for candidates with an Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Structural Technology or Engineering Science or an equivalent Associate Degree determined acceptable by the Department. H&H will provide on-the-job training and assistance to the Trainee to earn a certification to become marketable in this industry or become a permanent employee of H&H.

It is expected that the Trainee will complete their training in two years or less. The trainee will work directly with an inspection team (Team Leader and Assistant Team Leader) to assist with bridge inspections in the office and in the field. The trainee will work under the direction of the inspection team to assist in the preparation of field documentation such as sketches and field note sheets in the office prior to the field work. The bridge inspection work in the field will begin gradually after initial field safety training (OSHA 10 hour class) is provided. The field work will require the trainee to have some knowledge of Bridge Elements.

Alumni News – Angel del Rosario II, PM at Lendlease

Angel del Rosario II, CMCE Construction Engineering Technology BTech class of 2017, has started a new job as Project Manager at Lendlease. He will be taking over the new construction of the Och Spine Center at New York Presbyterian’s Weil Cornell Columbia Campus in Manhattan’s Upper East Side as well as participating in Mount Sinai’s new Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in East Harlem aimed at the advancement of Medical Research. Angel previously worked at Plaza Construction, where he completed multiple renovations at the Brooklyn Navy Yard along with the new construction of United Arab Emirate’s Mission to the United Nations. While at City Tech he was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

The CEC Collegiate Program introduces you to Navy life at your own pace. There are no uniforms, no drilling, and no service obligation until after you graduate. Simply work toward your degree, earn as you go, and then begin the process of becoming a commissioned Navy Civil Engineer Corps Officer.

RESPONSIBILITIES As part of the Navy Civil Engineer Corps, you can receive unrivaled hands-on experience and advanced training in civil engineering areas including architecture, construction engineering, environmental engineering, water resources engineering, geotechnical engineering, hydraulic engineering, land surveying, structural engineering, transportation engineering and community planning. You’ll quickly find yourself in charge of vital Navy projects, where you might:

  • Oversee construction of everything from runways to docks to buildings of all kinds
  • Supervise and manage utilities and other critical services
  • Manage a variety of skilled construction workers (Seabees)
  • Arrange budgets and schedules
  • Approve completed work

More specifically, you can focus your work on any or all of the following areas:

  • Contract Management—Be the primary contact between Navy and civilian contractors, managing contracts worth up to hundreds of millions of dollars. Handle every aspect of a project from overseeing construction to resolving design problems, to ensuring that payments are correctly processed.
  • Public Works—Assume responsibility for any of the hundreds of Navy shore facilities—some as large as entire cities. Supervise and maintain utilities. Oversee construction and repair, manage budgets, approve public works plans and provide services to visiting ships.
  • Construction Battalions—Command up to 600 Enlisted Seabee construction workers in the construction of airfields, bridges, ports or buildings—all in support of both humanitarian outreach and military deployment.
