Halimatou Barry. Thats my name. I am from Guinea, Conakry and I am Muslim. When people see my name or any name that they find unfamiliar, they don’t try to pronounce it right. They ask, “Can I call you this for short?” or “How about I call you this instead?” When I was younger, I accepted that and I would even just introduce myself and then say “hey you can just call me hali for short,” to make it easy for them. Now that I’m older, I can’t believe I allowed that. Now, I don’t accept that and I make sure that my name is said right. I think that it is disrespectful to NOT learn my name. It’s important and I’m sure if they were to be called wrong, it’d be an issue. I am very glad that I am finally demanding the respect I deserve. The Mohamed video was very powerful and I felt like I could especially relate so that was nice.
