The ending of Brave New Worlds didn’t meet my expectation. I actually thought there was going to be more to the story. Aldous Huxley opens up chapter 14 with the leading of Linda death. In which John was sad and furious. Sad because his mother was dying and furious at the same time because of group of khaki twins were making fun of his mom while she was laying in bed dying. ” What ever is the matter with her? Why is she so fat?” Pg 183 said the twins. They made these rude comments because they have never seen a women in the condition she’s in. She was old , taut skinned and not like one of them. But John was also upset for the fact that his mother kept calling him Pope. Which made him mad because how could his own mother not recognize her own son. But the sad ending of chapter 14 was the death of linda in which i believe she died of all the soma she had taken.

In the state of mind that John was in he was upset and had run into two Delta twins who were about to take soma. ” Listen, I Beg of you , Lend Me Your Ears,  Don’t take that horrible stuff its Poison, its Poison”  Pg 192 John tries his best to explain to the twins that soma doesn’t allow them to be themselves. He felt that his mother linda was a slave to the soma, and he felt that his duty was to make others feel freedom by making them to refuse taking the soma. By doing this John causes a fight in where Bernard and Helmholtz rush to help john and i believe end up getting arrested . But One thing that amazed me about the fight was that the policeman sprayed soma vapour into the air with machines so that the others listening to john rebel about the soma would forget about it . This just shows me how control the society really is. Its like they have a game plan for almost everything that goes down.

I have to say from chapter 16-17 the story just dropped. I barely understood what was doing on. I under stood that John, Bernard And Helmholtz were taken to Mustapha Mond , who was the Resident world controller for the Western Europe. John was shocked and fascinated the Mond had read Shakespeare. Its like they both had the same idea . but were pursuing it differently. John wanted freedom for every one and insisted why weren’t others allowed to read old things. Mond explains by saying ” Beauty’s Attractive , and we don’t want people to be attracted to old things.” Pg 198 In Which Mond felt like if people were all equal the society wouldn’t function and have the same order it has now. I Remember reading and John tells Mond why doesn’t he make every one an Alpha . Mond explains that Alphas would eventually bump head together. Each one would want to control. In which that case there would be no order. Then there was this whole talk about Religion and why the world state didn’t want to believe in god and Mond response was the same because it was old. I knew he still believed in it because he pulled out a bible to john explaining to him that he was had the same idea of freedom. After all this Mond decides to vanish all 3 from the world state but he actually tells john that he’s doing them a favor by placing them into a different society.

The ending of this story was not as i expected . i expected john to go back and fight try to change the world state in a way he pictured freedom. For himself and for his mother. But John completely isolates himself by moving into a light house. i really didn’t understand why john whipped himself and why others would want him to wipe them. i was so unclear with that part . But later on i read that John ended up in an orgy porgy. which was something he wasn’t into to he didn’t believe in that he went by Shakespeare way of love. ”  Oh my god , my god ” Pg 230 shocked by what had just happened john was found by the first arrivals ” Further side of the room they could see the bottom of the staircase that led up to the higher floors ; under the crowns of the arch dangled a pair of feet.” Pg 231 John had hanged himself. which was the worst ending ever.

As i continued reading Brave New World ,  Bernard character fascinate me even more . For the reason that he returns back with one goal and that was to keep his job and stay in the world state. In Chapter 10 Bernard arrives back to the Hatchery and stands up to the Director. The Director in had other plans. he discussed to Henry that he wanted to humiliate Bernard in front of every one and make an example out of him , The part i enjoy reading was when the Director calls for every ones attention and puts Bernard on the spotlight. The Director lets Bernard give one reason why showed he be allowed to stay and thats when Bernard first bring out Linda ” Those undistorted faces, a strange and terrifying monster of middle-agedness, Linda advanced into the room” Pg 138 Linda Explains to everyone that The Director made her have a baby in which John Walks in , and drops down on his knees in front of the Director and tells him my father . The Director shocked and embarrassed walks out the room. This shows a lot about Bernard because not only did he stand up to the Director but in front of everyone he also proved that things can change, decision can change, that change is possible in the world state

As i kept on reading i learned that the director had resign immediately after being humiliated by Bernard. But something i was confused about why was the other referring to john as the Savage. Was it because he wasn’t from the World State ? Or because he was the Director son. Everyone wanted to Meet John The Savage Man from the reservation. But no one really seem to care about Linda John’s Mother. “This was by far the strongest reason for people not wanting to see poor Linda, there was here appearance. Fat , having Lost her youth, with bad teeth and a blotched complexion.” Pg 142 Linda felt isolated that she touch as much as twenty grammes of soma a day. She felt like that was the only way she was able to stayed relax and wouldn’t care what any one else thought of her.

i Learned that Lenina has a crush on John she states that she never had sex with a savage man. Confused with her emotions on what she feels for john and being unsure if he likes her too he takes him on a feely. After getting of the taxi Lenina expects john to stay with her but he didn’t want to for the fact that he didn’t want to have sex with her. ” But John .. i thought you were … i mean aren’t you?” Pg 157 Lenina tells john expecting he would stay with her. But he didn’t he went back to his room and read Othello. After Failing to Seduce John the first time she takes soma and looks for john. Turns out after all John feels the same way for Lenina but he didn’t want to tell her for the fact she wouldn’t like the fact of commitment . I think John says this because when Lenina first arrived at the new mexico reservation all she talked about was ford and how people were so pose to do to a certain job. That everyone worked for everyone . and no one belonged to no one . But I’m noticing a change in Lenina she’s catching feelings.

As i continued reading Brave New World. I started to get more interested in it . In these few chapters we got to know a little bit more about Bernard. We also are introduce to John and Linda. In Chapter 6  the author explains to us what Bernard wants and what he is looking for. He try to explain to Lenina that he wants to be his own man, be able to do what he wants and do it on his own. Bernard Says ” More on my own not so completely a part of something else, not just a cell in the social body” Pg 90. Lenina is shocked of Bernard’s wants, and is surprise to hear it because it goes against everything she believes in. She believes that every one should work for everyone else , she feels like every one should follow there role in the caste system. After the little argument Bernard had with Lenina he ends up swallowing 4 tablets of soma he ends up having having sex with Lenina. In which he regrets the next day because he felt as if it was to soon. Later in that chapter We learned a little about the Director ; when Bernard approaches him with the idea of visiting the New Mexican Reservation. He explains that he was just like Bernard , that he had the same idea of wondering how life was out side the world state. So the director tells Bernard about Linda a beta in which he had a moment with and had lost her in the reservation. Also in this Chapter the Director calls out Bernard and tells him that he’s been getting reports of his behavior out of work in which he doesn’t like so he threatens Bernard by telling him he will transfer him to a Sub Centre in Iceland. I like the character Bernard for a bunch of reasons. One in which he’s sort of a little rebel going against the director and doing what he wants. Another is because he has that ambition of wanting freedom. In the Next few Chapters Lenina ends up going with Bernard to the reservation and she’s disgusted by the life style in which they lived in.” But how can people live like this “”These people have never heard of Our Ford” pg 105 Lenina explains that the life style in which the indians live by isn’t civil.The only part that really interested me while reading was when john was introduce , an indian who spoked perfect english and who seemed to be different from the others by his complexion. I got more into the story when john started telling Bernard and Lenina about the story about his mother Linda and how she had came from the World state long ago , with a young man who was his father. As Smart as Bernard is he ends up putting the pieces together and realizes that the director had told his the exact same story so he knew that john was the Director son. Bernard with the thought of being sent to Iceland tells John ” i Wonder if you’d like to come back to london with us” pg 129 . John an indian who always wanted to see the world state was trilled to go but Bernard first would have to get permission.

After reading the first few chapters of Brave New World by Aldous Huxley , Im still every unclear of the plot of the story. I like how the author has his ideal idea of utopian society of the future, how he divides people not by class but by the caste system. In which he people are categorize by either Alpha Beta Gamma Delta and Epsilon. People in this utopian society don’t get to choose what category they fall in, there given to them by birth in which i i disapprove from. I believe people should grow up to be who ever they want to be, no one should be force to do something or be on someone they don’t want to. In Chapter one , the author explains how each fetus is treated differently depending on which castes state they fall in to. For gamma , deltas and epsilon eggs are shocked so that they are weaken and become less society stable. The Author also explains to use that a person position in the caste system is usually recognize by the type of clothes they wear. For example deltas would wear khaki colored clothes. In Chapter 2 what I found pretty instering was the way they made babies dislike books and flowers. Reading it at first i didn’t understand why someone would do that but as i kept reading it made sense. By creating fear into an object a child would want , it would make them not want it any more. and in the infant nurseries room thats what they did they created fear in the babies by shocking them with loud noises such as alarms sounds while they crawled to the books and flowers. The Author explains that by doing this the babies develop a hatred toward the objects. in which makes them not want them anymore. I find this strategy pretty smart but cruel as well. We are also introduce to two Alpha males Bernard Marx and Helmholtz Watson. Also to Lenina    a worker in the conditioning centre. Also Henry Foster i really don’t know his position in the centre but he seem to explain the center to the group of kids . I notice while reading that there was a love triangle between Henry Foster and Bernard toward Lenina. Although i believe love is forbidden in this society because no man belongs to no women. One word i got suck on while reading was the word hypnopaedia , while later on i found out it meant learning by hearing while asleep. i was so lost when the Director was telling the story of the little boy who learned while hearing the radio his parents had left on. On page 36 the Director describes Hypnopaedia as ” The greatest moralizing and socializing force of all time” in which really caught my attention. I didn’t even know people could learn while they were asleep. Is this gonna affect the Society since the hole point of stopping delta babies from reading and writing is to that they remain in that caste system? I was getting confused after that. Also the drug soma was introduce although I’m still every unclear what it is, i believe it helps people go to sleep for a long period of time. This book is little hard to understand for the fact that is seems to change from story to story. I look forward to reading more of it .. -Arturo
