Journal #6

I am now in the groove with going to my internship site. I am doing twenty four hours a week to even out my semester in order to go to school, internship and work. Im excited to say I have been working on a lot of projects such as restaurant menus, flyers and posters. Its exciting because I am able to see my work in the real world not just a screen. Seeing my work in the real world excites and inspires me to create greater work.

One thing I have learned is how to work with clients. Some clients don’t know what they want, so I have to prep them and ask them what type of design would they like, bring samples of designs you like, ask them what colors they like etc. Also I have learned to send clients low res proofs when you are a printer. The reason you do this is so its clear enough to see a design but low res enough not to print any where else.

There are many printers in JLC Printing. They have plotters, Digital Printers, Thermal Printers and many more. I also learned how to make t shirts with  a heat press. The first step is designing the shirt on your computer, then you send the design to the plotter. The plotter prints and cuts the design on a special type of paper almost like a sticker. When everything is cut you place your printed design on your shirt. Place your shirt on the heat press for 5 senconds and your design is on your shirt.

Another Book To Read

Hey class, Jean-Paul again here with another good read on branding this week the Tittle, Logo: Lab, Featuring 18 case studies that demonstrate identity creation from concept to completion.
Christopher Simmons. Here is some insight on what this book is about.

Logo design is a hot topic for graphic designers, but most books on the subject offer little more than a gallery of successful identity systems. Logo Lab gives creatives the in-depth information they crave, with: -A look at 18 head-turning logos from concept to completion -Interviews with designers and clients on why each design works -High-profile case studies for Converse, the Houston Texans and Kroger Foods Every page is packed with the kind of analysis, sketches and insight designers crave. It’s exactly the kind of information they need to help their own clients stand out from the crowd.

This book is a great read for those of you out there who are into branding and would like some pointers on how to design logos, what works and what doesn’t and real life cases that have been affected by logo designs.

I bought a book called 999 Logo designs. They have a wide range of elements a designer can use to create logos or other things needed which use icon like vectors. Here is some insight on the book. 999 Logo Design Elements, Daniel Donnelly.

999 Logo Design Elements features 999 different logo elements provided to readers in vector format. Each logo element is a distinct and stand-alone piece that offers designers the capability to develop hundreds of thousands of logo variations on themes. The elements include swooshes, ovals, boxes, arrows, geometric shapes and hundreds of creative parts that can be pulled together to create original logo designs. Featured throughout the book are examples of logos and identities built with elements from the book. A CD-ROM containing all 999 copyright-free, vector-based logo elements is included with the book.

Enjoy the reading, Keep designing!

Journal Post #7

This week at the visual communications department my supervisor had some personal business to attend to so he could not be at the office.  I decided to work on the retouching from the previous week.  The photo was of the hospitality management students photo.  I had to clean up certain places, edit their clothing and tweak a few other nit bits of the photo.  First i started out with cleaning up one of the students jeans.  They were to baggy and i was told to make it look more clean and to remove the wrinkles.  This was an annoying task because his surroundings were very noticeable so any edits, blurs or warping around his legs would to look very obvious.  I first copied the photo and made edits on the most top layer.  I used the stamp and healing brush tool to remove small wrinkles and used the liquify to make the jeans more thin.  Liquifying the jeans to appear more thin causing the surrounding area to be blurry and stretched so i had to come up with a solution.  I cut out the area around the jeans and use the stitch tool and erased a little of the area for the bottom layer to appear.  I lit up all of the peoples faces in the photo and edited anyone’s lower body that showed skin.  I added a sock and stocking texture to the areas and added in a few tomatoes in the salad that one of the people were holding.  Lastly the sky was grey so i changed it to a blue sky and added clouds with the filters.  I completed the task and after emailing to my supervisor he seemed please with the retouch.

7st Journal

Time pass fast, I am working the internship job with George more than a month already in L&L. I am excited to back to office every week, because I can learn different stuff from my intern. My supervisor is trying to assign different kinds of job to me, and I have learned different experience from it.

George asks me to do the research of Thailand, be preparing the coming project for next week. Therefore, I keep looking over via internet for it, saving image, and making notes. I feel I am a tourist goes to Thailand soon since I did a lot of research, like the culture, food, and attractions. I got all the information that I need after 3 days, then I do another research about the advertising of Thailand, l try to see how to do a good ads for Thailand. After I have done those, I still have half day left, so I decide to go to the sales department to watch what kind of questions that tourist will like to ask mostly. During the period time, I make a lot of notes, which can help me do some good ads for next week. After I back to my seat, George asked me to leave early, he said I have done a good job today. I was shocked since I feel I didn’t do anything yet. Somehow, I understand something.

Nothing Much This Week

Hey class, unfortunately there isnt much to talk about this week other than the book I am reading. The book is called Lovemarks: The Future Beyond Brands Kevin Roberts, A. G. Lafley. Here is some infor mation on the book.

Lovemarks, advertising giant Saatchi & Saatchi CEO Kevin Roberts delves deep into what mysteries lie behind the long-term success and unwavering customer loyalty for a can of Coke or a pair of Levi’s, ultimately concluding that Love is the answer, and without some emotional connection to a product, it will dry up like a generic raisin in the sun. Enter Lovemarks, the new marketing buzzword, which will likely be bandied about at board meetings as vigorously as The Tipping Point. But before Roberts can get to what in fact a Lovemark means in the worlds of advertising and marketing, he takes us on a virtual tour of his CV. There was his first post at Mary Quant in London, then the gig as New Products Manager of Gillette International in the Middle East, on to CEO of Pepsi in Canada, and later the same role at Lion Nathan in New Zealand. The list goes on, and so does Roberts–on and on–about his achievements and experience building brand awareness and shaking things up (he famously machine-gunned a vending machine at a presentation for a spot on the evening news). More importantly, he succeeds at blasting away the smoke and mirrors that might prevent a creative genius (or an ordinary consumer) from seeing what makes Superman the most beloved super-hero of all time. Despite the somewhat egocentric approach to taking us there (he is, after-all, a pretty smart guy), we arrive at Roberts’s point beautifully, and see what he sees: “That human attention has become our principle currency.” And that, in these times, forming long-term emotionally charged relationships with customers is the only way to make a product weather the long haul. And while Roberts speaks to us in a spirited, conversational manner (that makes Lovemarks a pleasure to read), the design of the book seems to work against him, as convoluted typography and a general lack of layout consistency give the book a visually amateurish look. –Christene Barberich

I was tested on this book and to my surprised I gained a lot of valuable information such as the difference between a Logo and a Lovemark. see you guys soon.

Python Drain Cleaning

New assignment. Python drain cling services needed a business card and federal card design. This man is a Plummer who started his own business and now services the new york new jersey and long island area. The client was taken out to lunch and we were briefed on what the client need. Fortunately for me the logo was already developed by a designer at the agency. I used the logo to create  business card that was easy to read and aesthetically pleasing. The prior business card looked like someone vomited all their information on a small sheet of paper. I redesigned the business card to be vertical with the logo of the company on the back with the email and phone number and the name of the associate on the front with the business address and company website. I was also tasked with the creation of a referral card. It was to be made as a rip business card where the person would use one part of the card as a coupon and refer the other half to a friend for twenty five percent off their next purchase.. The referral card has the company logo blown up on the back with a variation of the business card integrated on it. The front has the information on what to do. Right now I am awaiting a client response so that I can either change the design or continue working and finalize the design. Also the book for this week was How to Design Logos, Symbols & Icons Gregory Thomas.

6st Journal

As usually, I back to office to wait for assignment from George. He asked to edit the business cards for every departments of the company, he said there is many new employee and old business cards need to update. Therefore, my job is going over all the different departments to ask them if they need to update any information for their business cards.

I meet a lot of employee from different departments, and get some knowledge of how the system of this company. At the beginning, I think I am only doing internship here, I don’t think to get to know this company more deep, but I can see how a company runs with their system beside design.

After I collected all the information from different departments, then I started to work on their business cards. It has a temple for me to do it, my job is editing the text so I don’t have to come up any new ideas or recreate anything. By doing this, I don’t feel bored as last week. There is something change myself, I want to do more practice to improve my skills instead of do a new project now. I believe design skill is the first and the most important thing, so that I need to keep working on it.

Journal 7

Since my internship almost finished 120 hrs, my friend introduced a chief editor of the Asian Fusion magazine to me. He wanted to see my portfolio and learned about me more before hiring me. Last Thursday, we had first interview meeting. I bought my portfolio to his office. While he reviewed my works, he kept asking me questions, such as “what kind of font I used?”, “why I came out the concept?”, “do I have experience on designing magazine?”, and “what kind of class I taken before”. He seemed like my works. After we discussion my works, he introduced his magazine to me. Let me know the background and information of the magazine. While I looked over the magazine, he asked me to give some commons or my thoughts about the magazine. I point out that the text were too tight; I might use san serif font instead of serif. He agreed my comment. However, he needed time to make decision and ask me wait for his email. After two days ago, I received his email, and he could provide an internship to me. We decided to have second interview in this Tuesday. In the second interview, the question mostly base on my schedule, the works I needed to work on and some personal questions. In the end, he gave me the files of this fall issue which just published few days ago. He wanted me to play around with it first, make some improvement of the layout. During these three months, I have opportunity to work on their winter issue.

Journal 6

This week I needed to finish 10 pages album design and continue work on the invitation card. I showed the drawing which I was done in Illustrator last week to my supervisor. He liked the style and the drawing. He said there were some places needed adjustments. He asked me to change the stork to brush stork, change another pink dress, and give some make up to the cartoon bride. I decided to redraw the dress first. I went to Google look for some references, downloaded some dress as samples. And then I placed into the illustrator and traced it with pen tool. Even adjustment, I spend half working day to finish up the drawing. After my supervisor proofed my drawing, I started design the layout of the invitation card. The background color I decided to use pink. I think it match the wedding atmosphere and the drawing. I placed the image to the right side in the invitation card, and the information and texts were on the left side. The whole concept idea was inspirited from the post card ideas. The whole text I use both script font and san serif. My supervisor liked my idea after I showed him my design. After I done the invitation card, I went back to my new album design. This album needed to handle lots of photos. Each page needed to fill at least 7 images. After these weeks, I thought my album design skill got some improve. I have confident that I can handle this challenge.

5st Journal

For this week, I feel getting more and more easy to work as an intern designer in L&L.

George didn’t give too much assignment to me this week, he only asked me to do the retouch and edit some of the old brochures. I feel bored to spend the whole week to doing those, since the first two weeks have different projects to work on. So I decide to ask George about anything projects that he needs me to follow up instead of doing such boring editing jobs. George said me that I need to have more practices to improve my Adobe skills before start any new projects. So that, I keep on editing the old brochures, even I feel this is boring. However, I can see different design styles from them since those brochures designed by different designers. Also, I can see there is many ways to edit or redo it since the idea may need to update, the text style can be change to a better way. Some of the brochures need to comminute with original designers, I have learn different kinds of knowledge during the commination.

This week is not busy, but I feel I have learn a lot from different designers, they have share their experiences to me, I can see there is not easy to be a professional designer.
