Celebrating the African-American Practitioners Absent From Way Too Many Classroom Lectures by Madeleine Morley, Eye on Design, 2018 and Typography as a Radical Act in an Industry Ever-dominated by White Men by Silas Munro, Eye on Design, 2019, Design Gets More Diverse by Alice Rawsthorn, NYTimes, 2011.

  • How do we change the commercial design field to include a diversity of voices and visions?
  • What will the commercial design field and the study of design history look like in 20 years?

We can change the commercial design field to include diversity by informing and educating more people of color about graphic design. As stated in the New York Times article. “Design gets more diverse”, the scarcity of arts education in the U.S., and the poor perceptions of careers in art of design can be blamed for the lack of diversity. I can relate to this because back in high school the only design-related class I ever had was one drawing class. I pretty much, like many other people, thought Graphic Design was just about sketching and drawing things. I wasn’t truly aware that Graphic Design encompasses a variety of things from typography to photography, package design, motion design, and so on.

In 20 years, I truly believe that Design will be much more diverse than it is today. This is because we are aware of the lack of that diversity. Bringing awareness to this issue is a step in the right direction because race is a topic that is often either ignored or looked down upon in the field of Design. With that being said, I believe this in those 20 years, the design will have much more variety in terms of race.
