My main qualifications and strengths as a graphic designer is to know the software. Using my creative abilities I also apply it with the person I am today. I am currently interning at Made in NY Media Center and I am learning really quickly how fast you have to keep up. In one day I am asked for atleast 3 ways to execute the idea. This is a great way to learn how life is after college and use that knowledge for even bigger and better job opportunities. I am seeking a job as a graphic designer that would not need someone of more than 3 years experience. My professional goals are to stick with a company for a long time, get to be able to work along side a great teammate that shares my interests as well as teaches me knew things. I would also like to work with a group-oriented place to get professional feedback on my work. For now, I see myself working in an office space. I like the idea of having my own space to work and I also see myself working alongside other designers. I also love to travel, so if my job requires me to move I would definitely seize that opportunity.
While I was searching for a job as a graphic designer I see that many areas requested a portfolio and a cover letter, which is to my understanding what is required in my field. But, I did stumble into the conflict where a lot of them ask for a minimum 2-4 years design experience while others ask for Masters in Graphic Design. This something that might be a problem to me due to the fact that I just want to receive my Bachelors and find a job and see later on if I decide to go for my Masters. Another conflict for me is the fact that they want someone who can also code for the web. Web design is a basic knowledge for me, so that is probably a weakness I will have to improve.
There are a lot of positions that are available to a graphic designer. They are mostly titled Sr. Graphic Designer or Jr. Graphic Designer. Many goals of these organizations that interest me is that many of them kind of want to rebrand or change their look, which for me I find that whole process exciting. I also see that a lot of them ask for great time management and organization skills, which are abilities I acquire. I feel like my education at City Tech really does help out and has somewhat prepared me to meet my employers’ needs. For example, in my Communication Design class we are always having a client and brainstorming concepts and ways to execute the ideas. We also learn in different classes how to work with teams as well as our communicating skills.
