Upon searching through websites like indeed and glass door I received a glimpse into what my future employees will require of me. Almost all of the organizations required that the applicant have at least a bachelor’s degree in a field related to graphic design. Employers required that all interested applicants also have knowledge on how to fully operate Adobe Suite programs such as Adobe Photoshop CS6+, Adobe Illustrator CS6+, and Adobe InDesign CS6+. Understandably they also required people with energetic and naturally creative personalities, they wanted problem solvers and people who were keen on attention to details. Considering the design world is all about attention to detail, I wasn’t really surprised. They also required a resume and also a portfolio of past work.
I firmly believe that by the time I am done receiving my education at city tech I will be able to enter the job market and put my skills to the test. So far I’ve had knowledgeable professors whom have helped me fine-tune my skills. My professors are blunt, and in a way it’s exactly what I need. Life after college wont be filled with people trying to sugarcoat things, especially in a professional setting. I also enjoy that the school offers a segment called ‘Meet the Pros’ where professionals from the design world visit the school and speak about their life as designers/artists. It lets us as students and designers know a bit about the potential hardships we may go through and also how to build contacts. This semester I’m learning how to build concepts to potentially run campaigns. Its a bit different from my other classes due to the fact that the professor consciously chose to not let students touch the computers but instead focus on the ideas themselves, whether it be drafting, sketching, or content planning. I am hoping I will be able to get an internship or two before landing an actual job.
