Brainstorm Assignment

3 Things that I believe I am a master and have interests in

  • Soccer
  • Video Games
  • Math (Calculations)

Soccer is what gives me happiness playing, watching, and talking about. I know that sadly the sport in the professional game has become more of a business, it’s basically rich people owning tv companies, tickets, stadiums to earn money and they do anything to gain more money, rather than caring about this beautiful sport. In an article at Forbes, the women’s USA national soccer team say that for their success in winning the most world cups,4 gold medals and 8 CONCACAF gold cups (During that time period), they would say that they were paid less than the men’s USA national soccer team, which never won a single world cup. While knowing so much about the men’s soccer team, I didn’t know a lot about this controversy with the female side of soccer. My question about this would be: How can they balance the players earning with a fair and equal amount of pay for both women and men with especially the recent pandemic, causing teams to lose millions of dollars?

It’s been a while since I have touched a video game, but I have that talent to play good in any game, and games are always fun. In an article by Game Rant, there has been recent controversy last year with Activision Blizzard as last year, there has been reports of sexual harassment, toxicity and gender discrimination from the workers in the company. This is absolutely terrible, and an investigation is being done to this day. I didn’t know about such terrible acts from a company like Blizzard, that are famous for many games. It made me think and question: What can we do to stop or lower the amount of toxicity and discrimination from video games, mainly multiplayer games?

Math is 50/50 for me, I like it because I am good with numbers and understand most of it.  For this topic, I decided to talk about economic problems, which I have some knowledge about. Most people talk about the war between Russia and Ukraine and the damages, refugees, etc. However, there has to be more attention put in the economy of both countries. This war, according to an article by CNN, says that Ukraine economy could drop by half this year and could be worse, depending on the duration and intensity of the war. While Russia being so powerful, there economy has dropped and is currently in a recession. These drops have affected Europe and Asia, which can cause a terrible decline to trade and value of things. My question would be: If war escalates, then how can we manage to save the economy from another great depression, and what’s the extent damage that a war can cause?

BRAIN/Storm Activity

Fashion is one of my greatest interests and I would consider it an art form. I wrote about this in the hive document but I am no designer. I love the fabric and the story some designers like to paint and all the creativity that goes into each piece a designer puts out. I am fascinated with designers using different materials other than fabric for pieces. One of my favorite designers, Iris van Herpen, uses 3D printing to achieve the look of her pieces. Tom Ford also took the challenge of using a different medium and molded metal to create a breastplate for one of his pieces. I feel that I have a good deal of knowledge about spotting a designer’s signature design aspect. I think it is very interesting to watch things like award shows and be able to pick out what fashion house designed what pieces. For example Comme des Garçons is easy to spot because of their obtuse designs for silhouettes and fabric combinations. I also like to see how that signature will slightly change with creative directors. Moschino before creative director Jeremy Scott had loud patterns and a focus on texture. After Jeremy Scott, there is more labeling and the brand has now become primarily camp instead of day to day wear. Another part of fashion that interests me is the push to make the industry more sustainable. Prioritizing the environment is very important to me as well as the humanitarian crisis the fashion industry causes. Hemp is one example of a sustainable fabric and it is personally one of my favorites. I love the texture of the fabric and how it will hold shape but it would not be a great option for every piece. Being knowledgeable about how these fabrics flow and hold shape is very important to me when talking about sustainability because the old fabrics need to be replaced by something.

I was actually not aware of how controversial using hemp fabric is. Hemp fabric is such a superior option when compared to cotton that it’s almost difficult to think why there would be problems using it. Hemp fabric is lightweight, three times stronger than cotton, and has the texture of linen but less expensive. Hemp fabric’s downfall and source of controversy is the fact that it is made of fiber that comes from cannabis plants. Because of the fabric’s association with cannabis causes many consumers to assume that it has psychoactive properties not realizing that the fabric does not work like that. Aside from consumers being ill informed, it is hard to grow these hemp fibers in the U.S. because cannabis laws are not the same in every state and because of how legally grown cannabis plants are regulated. Before this I had never known how difficult it is to create hemp fabric in the states. I think legalization in all 50 states would help this problem, but educating consumers after years and years of misinformation about cannabis in general might be even more difficult than that. My ending question has to be, how do we reverse these thoughts towards hemp fabric and towards sustainable fabric in general to save our environment?

Filter Bubble Response_Kenneth Marshall

From the video I’m learning how there are invisible algorithms that can dictate the way I consume information. It can stretch from the news information I search for as well as the content I consume when watching things like movies and tv shows. In my case I do think a lot of the news that tends to show up on the feed I pay attention to all have to do with something I care about. I tend to follow groups covering tech, comedy, anime, and movies so most new information gets filtered through those genres. I also imagine the friends we have play a large role in how we consume information, if you have a wide variety of friends, it can almost circumvent the algorithms. In my case one of my friends works as an E.M.T. She consistently shares intriguing stories about the medical field as well as updates on policy changes concerning my city. If friends were nonexistent, I imagine it would be difficult for people to ascertain new information that may or may not concern them in some sense I do consider myself trapped inside the filter bubble. I do investigate a range of topics but majority of the time I really care about the information that may concern me and my interest. I think the video brings up a good point about websites taking some responsibility to broaden the information that shows up on your news feed. Especially when it comes to misinformation all many people get is a poor update on why their opinion may be right.
