This semester, our work is divided into 4 different categories of concentration, or “UNITS.”

UNIT 1 (Literacy and Language)
UNIT 2 (Research, Citation, and Accountability)
UNIT 3 (Multi-Modal Creation and New Genre Adaptation)
UNIT 4 (A Final Portfolio including a written Final Reflection)

Each UNIT has one major, “capstone assignment.” To help you organize your calendars, the due dates for these major assignments are below (and are subject to revision):

Unit 1 Capstone Assignment Due Date: March 3

This assignment is called a “Literacy Narrative.” It is approximately 900 words long.

Unit 2 Capstone Assignment Due Date: April 7

This assignment is called a “Reflective Annotated Bibliography” and is approximately 1,800 words long.

Unit 3 Capstone Assignment Due Date: May 8

This assignment is called “A Multi-Modal Composition — Composing in a New Genre” and does not have any specific length. It is, however, accompanied by an “Artist Statement” that is 750 words long.

Unit 4 Capstone Assignment Due Date: May 11

Unit 4 is a Final Portfolio that includes your best version of ALL of the previous three capstone assignments put into one single document. There is no specific word length for the Portfolio. However, each student must write a “Final Reflection” of 1,000 words within their Final Portfolio.

Students will complete shorter, weekly assignments (approximately two per week, depending on the UNIT of study) and one Capstone Assignment for each UNIT.
  • The shorter assignments prepare the students in important ways for the Capstone Assignments, and also count as Class Participation. IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND THE CAPSTONES, YOU MUST DO THESE ASSIGNMENTS, IN THE ORDER THEY ARE GIVEN.
  • All of the assignments for this course can be found in the WEEKLY ASSIGNMENT FOLDERS at the start of each week.

Here is a document with a more comprehensive breakdown of the above UNITS and their goals.
