Filter Bubble Response-Haifa Yahya

Because of the internet, our lives have become easier and more convenient. We may use the internet to communicate with people all over the world, conduct business, meet new people and learn about different cultures, research, and so on. However, Eli Pariser demonstrates the disadvantages of personalisation and how it reveals our desires. Because each search engine’s approach varied, different results were provided for the same search. Individuals become focused or stuck in a bubble as a result of personalized information, which limits the complexity of our knowledge.

Eli Pariser’s overall message is that the internet is a profoundly unsettling place. People are forming new communities of interest all across the world, which may or may not be the ones they intended. Whoever puts them in a “Filler bubble” that tresves and limes their understanding. I used to be on the internet for hours at a time, looking up information. For my government class, I remember looking up information. Federalism was something I looked up. It showed me stuff I desired and had on my mind as soon as I typed it in and click search. and not knowing if the information is reliable. However, I’m growing more cautious about unsuitable information. I know that the internet is a powerful tool, but I also know that my own mind is an even more powerful tool. I have to be cautious about what I believe, because even though I know it’s reliable, I don’t know if it’s true.

Here is a quote that i liked by Eli Pariser

“Your computer monitor is a kind of one-way mirror, reflecting your own interests while algorithmic observers watch what you click.”

My Literacy Narrative – An Excerpt

My literacy narrative essay focuses on a personal experience that I wrote about and expressed with the help of articles and the internet. I chose this theme since it is something about which I am quite passionate. I genuinely believe that today’s literacy skills are a reflection of the society we live in. I chose to write about my reading and writing experience since it was one that I still remember to this day. When I think of reading and writing I think about the time when I did that essay. I recall the days I spent reading all of the articles and conducting research, and I have no doubt that this experience influenced me.

In my senior year of middle school, class started and I had two periods of english. In the first period, the teacher would explain the topic. And gives us a workout from the book. And second period, there would be a whole class discussion and the students would share their opinions and also write short response essays. This was the usual format for our English class for some days. It was a routine I got used to. But on one particular day, the topic was different. The teacher didn’t go over the book. Instead, she asked us a question, “If you were in a country where there’s war, what would you want to do?” I don’t remember the question clearly but I heard the word “Refugees“.

Refugees, which the teacher mentioned were people who had to leave their own country because of war. They had to leave their homes, their jobs, their loved ones, and even their name. They had to start a new life somewhere else. The class discussion went on for a long time. Some students shared their opinions. One student mentioned how the refugees were like strangers in the new country. They didn’t know the language and they had no money to pay for things. They were afraid that the people in the new country would not accept them. Then another student suggested that the refugees and immigrants sound the same . They both mean the same thing. But the teacher clarified that the word “Refugee” means “A person who has to run away or leave their country because of danger or war.” while immigrants are people who come to a country for better or for new things. They are not forced to leave their country. They have a choice.” Before the bell rang, the teacher handed us several articles and instructed us to write an essay about “Refugees,” referencing quotes.

Thank you, and please feel free to comment on anything that comes to mind.

“Name Names – dede.”

The one who truly influenced and educated me in life is grandpa. He was a fantastic man and a great role model. Been a hero to me, the one who instilled in me the values of independence and hard work. Grandpa also advised me to live a life that was free of regrets. He was the one who pushed me to be honest and live a decent life.

After high school i lost hope of going to college. I thought I didn’t have what it takes. Because of Covid-19 and how dad don’t trust me. They think that college is a club. The way society made it look like us Muslim women don’t need to be educated or enter collage. The mindset those Arabs hold scares me. Because of tradition, many girls do not complete their schooling. Many Middle Eastern parents continue to force their daughters to marry early. I’m not saying  dad is forcing me, however he thinks that college is no different than high school and you would learn the same things. But that is not the case, I’ve seen and been to collage and I’ve taken things further and further. There is so much more to learn. I want to learn more. I want to learn more than just Arabs culture. while hearing those thoughts and opinions of people for a year I started to think to myself what am I waiting for. I have to get my life back on track. I’m 19 years old and I’m no longer going to wait. “I can do this”.

Grandpa lives far from us, but comes every Sunday. He loves to tell stories of his journey across the country, how he worked hard and achieved his goals, and how he became the man I see today. Grandpa usually visits my room because he knows I sit alone often. So he would come to my room to chat and to give me a heads up. He was able to tell me many stories about himself and give me the best advice. Said that hard work and determination could get you anything you wanted in life. And if I want to go to college to do it. It will be possible. I wouldn’t have known for sure if it wasn’t for him. And he’s been an inspiration to me. I love spending time with him and I’m glad I have a reliable person like him. I love him because he is the reason I am the person I am today. Thank you grandpa.
