Mrs. Mallards tragic death?

The Story of an Hour by Kate Choplin was a very ironic story. As the story begins, you can’t help but to feel bad for, Mrs. Mallard. She was introduced as a woman who seems very fragile, and obviously it’s because of her heart problems. In the beginning of the story, the author makes us believe that Mrs. Mallard cares a whole lot about her husband, Brently. The author says that her sister Josephine told the new to her with broken sentences, meaning that she wasn’t sure how to tell her the bad news lightly. When the news was broken to her, she cried in her sisters arms and then made her way to her room, alone. The author speaks about a physical exhaustion that Mrs. Mallard had felt, that reached into her soul. Also how she was just looking out her window, crying similar to a child that had cried itself to sleep. At this point in the story I thought that the story would go on about all the pain she felt or how she would later on deal with the loss. It was very interesting when the author spoke about an intelligent thought that Mrs. Mallard had had because who really thinks in a situation like this. It all became a bit clear when Mrs. Mallard was shouting out free, but was also very ironic. It was very odd because Brently was not sick, he had died in an accident so it couldn’t have been a “My husband was very sick, he’s free from all pain” thing. We later on find out that she herself had been freed from a man who “..had never looked save with love upon her..” It was as if Mrs. Mallard felt relief by his death. When Josephine hears Mrs. Mallard speaking to herself and tells her to stop because it would make her ill, I thought maybe Mrs. Mallard was telling herself these things to console herself, since she did have heart problems. The big twist to the story was when Mrs. Mallard goes downstairs with her sister and we later find out that Mrs. Mallard had actually died of heart disease from joy. Also the fact that her husband Brently had not died.

Trouble heart:Story of an hour

The short story by Kate Chopin symbolizes independence. As the story starts, it states that Mrs. Mallard is suffering from a heart trouble, this foreshadows what later kills her, a heart disease of joy that kills. In my opinion I believe her heart trouble represent her unhappiness and forbidden pleasure for independence. In the story Mrs. Mallard can only experience freedom privately. After hearing that her husband as passed away, Mrs. Mallard at first weeps but then went away privately to her room.

As she look out the window of her room she saw “trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life”.Like the trees Louise was mentally excited to take on her new life without her husband who she loves “sometimes”. In there she thought silently of how her life has gradually changed in minutes. For once in her life she felt liberated and excited to make her own decisions. She sees her life as absolutely hers and her new freedom as the essence of her being, she felt “free, free, free!”.

When Louise saw the return of her husband she might of felt extremely disappointment. The joy she felt was taken away so quickly, her independence is taken away. As Chopin states at the end of the story, Mrs. Mallard dies of heart disease of joy that kills. This goes back to the beginning of the story when Chopin mention Louise have heart problems.imageimage

Life Might be Long

Zenia McLeod,

“The Story of An Hour” talks about a woman, Louise Mallard, and how the news of her husband’s death forced her to go through an emotional thought process of her life. This story reveals how she responds and why she feels the way she does. At first, she is saddened by the news. However, as she sits in her room and looks out the window, she feels an intelligent thought coming to her from a break of clouds in the sky. She feared the thought, but couldn’t help to realize that she was free from the rule of her husband. As Louise embraced this idea, she felt alive (‘her pulses beat fast, and the coursing blood warmed and relaxed every inch of her body.’). Regardless of the bitter moment of grief she would endure when seeing her husband at his funeral, she looked forward her new long life. She evening prays that her life might be long. These words had a different meaning to her before the news of her husband. She used to dread the thought of living long under his way of taking power and her will from her. Now, her prayer is that life might be long so she can embrace living in her own power and will. She can do and think what she pleases, which made her feel victorious. However, all of these feelings revelations crashed when she saw her husband walk through the front door. The joy of her husband’s death suddenly vanished, and her heart couldn’t take the immediate change of how her future was no longer hers. The irony is that sadly, she doesn’t live long. She never thought that she would die young. When she had her husband, she was focused on having to be with him forever. After his death, her focus was now living on her own the way she wanted to. Then, the unexpected happened when her husband came home. All that she had discovered now meant nothing.  Her heart, which was filled with joy for a moment, failed.

The story of Mallard

Yamena Taha

In the short story “The Story of an Hour” the author Kate Chopin describes a story about a women’s life journey to find happiness. As I was reading I noticed the main theme was irony. In the story Chopin explains how the main character Mrs,Mallard mother of six has heart problems. She is about to hear the news of her husband’s death. It is very ironic that Mrs. Mallard begins to have heart problems around the time when she found out about her husband’s death. Mrs. Mallard irony does find happiness. She expresses her joy, not her joy for her husband’s death but for her freedom. This emotion is symbolizes by her looking out for the window, symbolizing freedom. Not only did she emotionally express hurt freedom she verbally expressed her freedom after her husband’s death. She begins to feel guilty for he emotions. Later on in the story, Chopin later uses the literately technique, imagery. She begins see her dead husband on her door step. As we know Mrs.Mallard has heart problems. I believe that the theme of this story is death and or tragedy the reason for this is because it seems that Mrs.Mallard has died from heart disease.

Puritanical

Puritanical – Adjective

Very strict especially concerning morals and religion.

Found in: “There Was Once,” by Margaret Atwood.

  • “Another thing. Good and wicked. Don’t you think you should transcend those puritanical judgmental moralistic epithets? I mean, so much of that is conditioning, isn’t it?”

This passage means that “good and wicked” are just people’s labels on what they think is moral and immoral. However, it does not mean that these labels are absolutely true, or that people are born belonging to either label.

What killed Mrs. Mallard, Extreme Joy or Shocking Disappointment?

“The Story of an Hour,” by Kate Chopin, depicts the life of a woman whose husband had just passed, or so she thought. Throughout the short story, there is a great deal of imagery, foreshadowing, and irony even at the very end.

The protagonist, Mrs. Mallard, is straight-away revealed to have a heart problem, which makes her delicate to shocking situations. I saw that as a foreshadowing of how the story will end. She was gently told about her husband’s death and she broke down immediately. This goes to show that she really cared about her husband. Then there is some imagery mixed with irony in the story as Mrs. Mallard gazes out the window in a daze. A tragic accident occurred, and outside the window it seemed like a calm beautiful day. I believe that the scene outside brought a spark into Mrs. Mallard. She began to feel something “creeping” up inside her. She tried to fight the feeling, because deep down she knew that feeling so joyous at the death of her husband was very inappropriate; but she couldn’t fight it. She felt that marriage was overly binding. Though she loved her husband, for the most part she disliked him; maybe even hated him. She began to feel overjoyed at the possibility of her new life, a long life, just for herself. This seemed like a bad omen to me, mostly because of the information about her medical issue in the very beginning.

Toward the end, as a plot-twist, Mr. Mallard appears alive; at worst, he is “travel-stained.” Mrs. Mallard reaction was immediate, causing her death. I noticed this from the fact that, as soon as he walked in, Mrs. Mallard’s sister, Josephine, screamed. The doctors figured that she died of the extreme joy she felt. However, I say it was disappointment. Mr. Mallard turned up alive, killing her extreme joy when she thought he was dead.

Introducing Myself <3

My name is Naiomi Ramos and I am 19 years old. I come from a Dominican family which I truly love. I love my culture and my roots although I was born in New York. I believe I am a really family orientated person because we share lots of time together. I was blessed to be an aunt at a young age by my brother and I love my niece as my own (I love kids). I am Liberal Arts major at this point and will be getting my associates degree by the end of this semester. I will be coming back to school and trying to get into the radiology program which is my dream in spring 2015 because sadly they only accept people in spring semester. I was missing one prerequisite which didn’t allow me to apply this semester, but I am taking it knowJ. I hope for the best and that everything come out as plan. I am sure that I will like to stay in the medical field just in case radiology doesn’t work out. I am a very friendly person love to meet new people yet I could be shy at the same time. I love to dance (Spanish music is my preference haha). One thing I truly love to do and always do is laugh. I feel like laughing is the joy to life. I am a strong believer that everything happens for a reason so, therefore i try to always stay positive know matter what situation I am in. I am truly looking forward to this class. I hope to learn more about women writing and their different styles and ideas.  I hope my classmates and I have a great semester (of course you to professorJ). I was glad to meet you in our last meeting and hope on having a great relationship!

Introducing Myself

My name is Nathalie Severino and I am a Communication Design major. I am 20 years old and my family is from the Dominican Republic. I am aspiring to get my Bachelor degree, however, I am thinking of transferring to a different school this year. After I graduated high school, I actually had a tough time trying to figure out what career I wanted to get into. Up until the end of senior year in high school, I was convinced that I would become a lawyer. It wasn’t until my father saw me hunched over a design trying to make it perfect for two hours that I realized what I was doing. He helped me by pointing out what I was actually passionate about.

I currently live with my sister in the Bronx, but I visit my parents and younger brother in New Jersey often. I am originally from New York, but I had been living there since the fourth grade up until I graduated high school. Until recently, I had been working as a data entry clerk at a union for asbestos handlers called Local 78. It was a monotonous job, to say the least.

One of my favorite things to do is watching movies with my boyfriend, who is also my best friend. I also like video games, fashion, all kinds of music, playing sports, drawing, anime, and eating. One of the main reasons I am taking this class is because I also love literature, and women have written some incredible works throughout history, so this class was my first choice.

Can Death Equal to Happiness?

I found “The Story of an Hour”, by Kate Chopin very interesting. Throughout the story elements that kept coming across has to be irony and symbolization. It starts of by stating that Mrs. Mallard has a heart problem which right away made me think that something tragic was bound to happen as I continued to read. We then find out about her husband’s death due to a terrible railroad accident. As a normal wife will react towards this type of horrible news Mrs. Mallard was devastated, not wanting to accept the truth.

Mrs. Mallard then takes time to be alone and locks herself into her room where the irony of this story begins to take place. As Ms. Mallard is alone in her room staring through a window, which in the story it will symbolizes the new life she sees for herself. She starts to feel a sense of joy and freedom. The irony of the story is that due to her husband death she knows feels free. Mrs. Mallard is now in control of her “own” life. In the story she repeats to herself, “FREE, FREE, FREE.”  After reading how she felt only makes me assume that while she was living with her husband she was unhappy. I also believe that she really didn’t know how unhappy she was until this happen, until she actually felt the sense of being on her own where she will live for herself.

I also feel as Mrs. Mallard felt a sense of guilt for feeling this way after her husband death. The authors states, “There was something coming to her and she was waiting for it , fearfully”. This convey that she was afraid of what she was feeling because maybe she understood that it wasn’t normal to have joy or relief in such a terrible situation.

Mrs. Mallard now hopes for a longer life whereas before she was afraid of it being long. The story states “she was drinking in a very elixir of life through that window.” The window was a symbol of life where she saw all kinds of days she will be free, where she smelled fresh air and heard sounds that gave her a new reason to live.  Later in the story we find out that Mr. Mallard was actually alive and was not even near the accident that occur which is also something to think about because in the beginning of the story Richard states that he waited for the second telegram to assure it was him. At the moment of his arrival Mrs. Mallard dies of her heart disease.

Irony also takes place when the author states “When the doctors came they she had died of heart disease—- of joy that kill.” Now we can ask ourselves two questions was it the joy that of seeing her husband again or that fact that she just lost the joy she recently regained after feeling free again? In my opinion I believe that she died due to the fact that she was about to relive the life she had before.
