Miss Furr and Miss Skeene

“Helen Furr and Georgine Skeene were regularly living where very many were living and cultivating in themselves something. Helen Furr and Georgine Skeene were living very regularly then, being very regular then in being gay then. They did then learn many ways to be gay and they were then being gay being quite regular in being gay, being gay and they were learning little things, little things in ways of being gay, they were very regular then, they were learning very many little things in ways of being gay, they were being gay and using these little things they were learning to have to be gay with regularly gay with then and they were gay the same amount they had been gay. They were quite gay, they were quite regular, they were learning little things, gay little things, they were gay inside them the same amount they had been gay, they were gay the same length of time they had been gay every day.” Found on page 499 of Gertrude Steins “Miss Furr and Miss Skeene”.

I believe that the main idea of Steins passage was happiness. I believe this because as I was reading the passage Stein spoke about the things and ways that Hellen Furr and Georgine Skeene were happy. I’m not really sure what their relationship was, but they lived together for a while and were happy. In this passage Stein says, “Helen Furr and Georgine Skeene were living very regularly then, being very regular then in being gay then.” Stein says that at this point they were living regular lives. They were nuetral, not happy. After that Stein says that they would look for things that made them happy. The author says that at one point they were happy both inside and out. The author also says that they were learning new ways of being happy. Its pretty interesting that Helen Furr and Georgine Skeene were always happy. They were never feeling anything but happy in this story. They were also both singers and that made them pretty happy also. At the end, Helen Furr and Georgine Skeene lived separately. The author tells the reader that Mrs. Furr goes on living in the same place and being happy as always, but we hear nothing about Georgine Skeene.

Level without prejudice

” And if you honestly desire to find your level without prejudice be brave and deny at the outset that pathetic clap trap war cry women is equal of man for she is not.”

The term manifesto means a public declaration of policy and aims. In the article by Mina Loy she focuses on many publications surrounding the female population. One of her focus is when she states ” And if you honestly desire to find your level without prejudice be brave and deny at the outset that pathetic clap trap war cry women is the equal of man for she is not.” This statement can be interrupted as women are superior to men. Women have always been looked upon as inferior man, this statement is advocation that women are similar to man but they are placing themselves at the top. This statement can also be interrupted as women cannot be compared to men in a similar way that would be able to set the two sexes as equal or better than each other. In other for women to experience fairness without prejudice that must expect the fact that they are not equal to man.

passé

  • part of speech- adjective
  • no longer fashionable; out of date.

  • “There Was Once” – Margaret Atwood. Page 69. Second sentence.
  • ” Forest? Forest is a passĂ© , I mean, I’ve had it with all this wilderness stuff. It’s not a right image of our society, today. Let’s have some urban for a change.”
  • Based off the next couple of sentences, the word “change” is a perfect context clue to describe the word “passĂ©”.

” There Was Once”

I love the way this reading was written. “There was once” is a great example of society and its history, the way many of us were taught to  look at life unknowingly. Many of these folk tales are told in subliminal messages, they paint a non visible picture in  our minds, evil ” stepmothers” wicked “step sisters” .. the golden “prize”; a  Prince charming; the l helpless miserable “good girl”. I have come to realize how these characters and traditional stories have manipulated the way I imagined life to be.

The second person in the reading was against  any common  clichĂ©, I loved it. I believe that this reading opens up the minds of the reader.  We must question all that we read. We must ask our selves why a wicked step-mom; a step-mom can be loving, caring supportive and many other great things, The second voice was basically questioning the first voice, The second voice was showing that he was  tired of all the negative’s that reflected on the woman in these tales. The negative female characters in these stories  seem to have been adapted as a norm for decades.

We must question everything we read, many of these tales tells a story about ourselves and the way society has been built around these readings. Our children and grandchildren’s children will also hear these tales, we want to be able to allow them to question and shape a better world, a great way of doing so is finding the root of reason. Why ?. Could a simple fictional story actually have a secret mission?, Could the tale of Cinderella have a connection with the gap  between woman ? were woman sublimely taught not to value and care for each other?. Why is the price and marriage the happy ending, are a woman’s life  not more meaningful?, Is marriage our biggest agenda?, can it possibly be a woman’s greatest achievement?.  I think not, we must apply the tactics of the second voice in everything find the story behind the “story”.

Frida Khalo

Love Embrace

Love Embrace is a depiction of the world and the role that woman play in it . The painting displays woman as the nurturer and preserver of life, from the holding of a grown man as an infant; to the milk falling from the nipples of the woman painted in the back of Frida. Love Embarce is a painting that celebrates life love and earth all in one. In my opinion it is Genus and mysteriously simple.

“The Story of an Hour”

The very beginning of the reading began by telling us about Mrs. Mullard’s heart condition. I knew automatically that her condition will play a part though out the reading. Mrs. Mullard was portrayed as a sensible individual. I felt as if her reaction when informed about her husbands death was normal at first, I thought that maybe she wanted to be grieve alone. I now come to the conclusion that maybe she went  in the room because she didn’t want to display her true feelings of relief knowing her husband would be gone forever.

I believe that she had loved her husband and maybe the years took a toll on her very existence, The way she viewed her self in her relationship was more responsibly than love its self. As she reflected on her life she felt as if she was more of a prisoner than a willing wife. Mrs. Mullard was unable to control her emotions of joy. The reading describes her repeatedly saying the word “free” , this is concrete evidence of the way she viewed her unhappy marriage.

I  came to the conclusion that Mrs, Mullard died when finding out her husband was actually alive because, there was too many emotions spiraling at once, and her weak heart couldn’t handle so much at once. In my opinion it may be a twist of karma , maybe her husband felt same as her, maybe he will celebrate, how can one have a happy relationship with one who is not?. Maybe her death represented true freedom for Mrs. Mullard after all. Mrs. Mullard’s death could have meant everlasting freedom and peace. She had plans to finally live for herself in the coming years and a twist of fate happened, although it was not what she planed, Mrs. Mullard still gained her freedom form life as she knew it.

Slaying Phantoms: Response to ‘Professions for Women”

Excerpt taken from second to last paragraph:

“These then were two very genuine experiences of my own. These were two of the adventures of my professional life. The first–killing the Angel in the House–I think I solved. She died. But the second, telling the truth about my own experiences as a body, I do not think I solved. I doubt that any woman has solved it yet. The obstacles against her are still immensely powerful–and yet they are very difficult to define. Outwardly, what is simpler than to write books? Outwardly, what obstacles are there for a woman rather than for a man? Inwardly, I think, the case is very different; she has still many ghosts to fight, many prejudices to overcome. Indeed it will be a long time still, I think, before a woman can sit down to write a book without finding a phantom to be slain, a rock to be dashed against. And if this is so in literature, the freest of all professions for women, how is it in the new professions which you are now for the first time entering?”

The main idea of this passage is that in any profession, women have obstacles to face because they are women. Some obstacles, such as struggles with self, may be more achievable than outward obstacles. The writer states ‘ The obstacles against her are still immensely powerful–and yet they are very difficult to define’. She reveals that there are still many prejudices to overcome. These come from the stereotypical roles that women are ‘supposed’ to have, and the attempt to break down these ideas in order for women to be truly successful. Outwardly, it may seem like women have overcome all odds already, but there are still issues women face underneath the surface. The writer also emphasizes the struggle that might take place by simply saying ‘  And if this is so in literature, the freest of all professions for women, how is it in the new professions which you are now for the first time entering?’. She notes that there are some professions that haven’t been attempted by women, and whose ‘phantoms’ still have to be slain. There mare fact that she feels the opposition in the freest of all professions shows her concern for professions that have yet to be reached by women. This point connects with the rest of the passage of giving an understanding of ones experience in professions for women. The writer is simply sharing what she has gone through and her revelations about women in the work force as a whole. I have found a lot of truth in this passage. I’ve experienced the surprised  responses in expressing my aspiring profession, knowing that I received those responses because I’m a woman. I also know that I’ll receive more of these responses as I grow more in my career. I just have to be persistent in slaying the phantoms.

Mina Loy, Feminist Manifesto ; Response

Last paragraph in “ Feminist Manifesto”
by Mina Loy “The desire for comfortable protection instead of an intelligent
curiosity & courage in meeting & resisting the pressure of life sex or
so called love must be reduced to its initial element, honour, grief,
sentimentality, pride and & consequently jealousy must be detached from it.Woman
for her happiness must retain her deceptive fragility of appearance, combined
with indomitable will, irreducible courage, & abundant health the outcome
of sound nerves—Another great illusion is that woman must use all her introspective andclear-sightedness & unbiased bravery to destroy—for the sake of her self
respect is the impurity of sex the realization in defiance of superstition that
there is nothing impure in sex—except in the mental attitude to it—will constitute
an incalculable & wider social regeneration than it is possible for our
generation to imagine.”

Throughout this story my ultimate idea of what she is trying to say is that men
and women are not equal. If both sexes start to be what each other “really”
wants to be and not what society expect them to perform then maybe the equality
between them will come closer.  It states “Leave off looking to
men to find out what you are not —–seek within yourselves to find out what you
are”, in my opinion I think that she is trying to say that many women become
the person their husband or “the men of the household” want them to be. They
never really figure out they real identity within. If we start to live without stereotype
such as : women are for being at home and taking care of the kids and men are supposed to work and support his family , make all the rules people will start to realize
that both sex can actually be able to do either if that’s the person they
really are. One of the lines that really caught my attention while reading has
to be “To obtain results you must make sacrifices & the first and greatest
sacrifice you have to make is of your”virtue”, clearly this line is trying to
say that any women have a hard time in realizing that they are actually more
then what society expect them to be which for example is, a for sex, a house wife,
emotional and a person that dwell a lot in love. The author is trying to say is
that the purpose is not to have the same right men do and be equal to them, but
to look deeper within themselves to gain their individual worth not caring the status
men are in. A women should take full responsibly in their lives make it their
business to be educated and be respected.

Fictitious

Fictitious (adjective)

Definition: Not real or true

Source: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/fictitious

Found in: Mina Loy “Feminist Manifesto” (12th paragraph)

Quote: “The fictitious value of a woman as identified with her physical purity—is too easy to stand-by—.”

I fully understand the meaning of the word fictitious now when Loy was trying to imply that value of women and their identities have been fabricated.
