I think that the creators of Antigone in Ferguson wanted to attract people who wouldn’t have ordinarily attended the production of a Greek play to illustrate that important and impactful lessons can come from places and events that we normally wouldn’t associate with or expect to find lessons in. They wanted to show that varying forms of art can have profound effects, and that we must be open to learning a little bit of something from a little bit of everywhere. I think that the creators added the police in the preparation and discussion so that it wouldn’t feel biased or perhaps disingenuous, adding the cops ensured that both sides could see the entire coin, and a real conversation could take place. Antigone in Ferguson kind of changed my view on the play but at the same time it didn’t. It didn’t change the profundity of the tragedy and the story for me, but something I took away from the modern retelling is that this work of literature and art is still relevant in the modern day and it has held up pretty well and is still very impactful. That kind of blew my mind.
