Alice Vidal – Discussion 1

  1. Dawoud Bey wanted to make his photograph convey a deep complex humanity, he wanted there to be a deeper meaning. He uses photography to look back in time. In the exhibition on the 1963 bombing by members of the KKK in Alabama, he paired two sets of portraits. The impact he sought to create was to visualize the past, while in the moment.
  2. Carrie Mae Weems uses photography to create a story. She was able to photograph whatever she wanted in her own environment. The kitchen table project sought to impact women. The project wanted to highlight the battle around family, monogamy, or between the sexes.
  3. I believe one way I can find my own voice is by experimenting with different types of photography and seeing which one I like the best. I should photograph things and moments that are impactful and important.
