My topic question was about how the beauty industry keeps failing black women. I have always been interested in beauty and makeup. I wanted to do some research that I was very interested in and that I believe a lot of women are also interested in. The inspiration that led me to write about this subject would be Rihanna. After reading about her brand, Fenty Beauty, I discovered that she made 40 shades of foundation for all skin types, and I was amazed, but it also made me wonder why other brands are not doing the same thing. This prompted me to write about the subject. The reason I chose this topic was that I had a lot of friends who were struggling to pick the right cosmetics that fit their skin. This frustrates me because they haven’t been able to feel beautiful with their makeup done. I chose white women and the beauty industry as well as makeup companies as my audience because they don’t want to make any adjustments to this issue because they don’t fully understand all black women who use their voices to get them to do what’s right and make changes. I’ve chosen to write in the genre that I did because they can use the numerous examples and links I’ve given to fully understand the problem. This will give them an insight into my thoughts, but also facts, information, and statistics through videos, magazines, websites, etc. The purpose of this piece is to make known the voices, challenges, and stories of black women who are struggling to find the right products for them in the beauty industry. My aim is to get to my audience and have information so that there can be more progress in the beauty industry. I want my audience to take advantage of these facts and sources given to obtain more facts about this issue, which is something that needs to be talked about, particularly because young black women need to grow up and have someone who looks like them as an inspiration and someone to look up to. My choices of the genre are my personal written statements and information, a video explaining my topic, a blog, and an article. These were my preference of genres because they will keep readers engaged and gain knowledge of the subject as well. This was the best way to reach out to my audience because I added my own thoughts and added facts, statistics, and articles about the experiences of black women. This will allow them to truly appreciate their struggle and their emotions. What I think I should have done better would be to look at more choices for genres to be included in order to provide more details and different views. However, I still believe I have been able to achieve my goal and reach out to my audience. I was able to speak about the issue and make the voices of black women heard and understood which is the first reason why I chose to write about this topic.

For creation, a lot of things are unknown. Even for me, the author of the project. I chose to do a video as the project. In fact, this is not easy for me, it could be a challenge. I’m a student and I haven’t been touching things about the video clips. As I said before, a lot of things are unknown, I need to realize and learn. But why did I chose to do the project as a video? First, I think it is an effective way to get information. Second, it may be more attractive than other genres. This is a very creative work, requires tons of wild imagination. In general, I should know what am I going to do and think about is an effective approach to my expectation. I only have a general direction for the video architecture, and I have no idea how is the final result will be. I found I can understand my audience, first ensure who will watch my video which is who is the audience. And then, I use their point of view to think, how is the video can be more acceptable. Maybe I can add some light music or some warm picture and short videos, so I can bring the audience into my rhythm. I can also find something useful in the article I have done, such as that film A Street Cat Named Bob, which I think fits my topic very well. I may choose some scenes to use in my video. Or I can search on the internet about the experience to make a video and some similar videos as I’m going to do. So if when I stuck, I can something to reference, and avoid some mistakes that they have. I also have difficulty, if I use a video to support my topic, it means I have to add some voice-over explanation from me. But I don’t know how to make my voice more natural in the video. During the production process, even I feel my voice cant blend into the video, it’s very inconsistent which is my trouble. I’m still trying to figure it out. Even though there are some troubles, I stuck to my topic. The reason promotes me to choose this topic is I think this is a topic that can make people feel warm, make people feel soft. Especially now, the situation of the world is not well, a lot of people quarantine at home. So people’s negative emotions tend to explode. Loneliness, sadness, and helplessness are emotions that many people have to face. Even hospitals are overwhelmed. I think people need an effective way to deal with stress. To help us get through this together.
I hope that after people look at my project, they will seriously consider implementing something. Now there are only a few ways to vent, if you keep ignoring it, one day will erupt. Just like a dam bursting. I hope my project can persuade some people, or give some people a clear direction, let them know an effective way. I haven’t finished it yet, but so far, my project is on track. Maybe I need more time to perfect it. And there’s one thing I’d like to share with all producers. When you are stuck, go find some similar things, not for copy, for find an idea.
Rough Draft of Artist Statement: For my topic, I wrote about the differences between Mexico and the United States. I wrote about this because I believe that this topic can be useful to future travelers. I started by writing about something I was curious about. I chose to write about traveling and my curiosity about the world we live in. When we think of traveling, we all have questions. We’ve all wondered what it would be like to travel to another country. I decided to use that and write about the differences between the two countries who are located next to each other, yet are so different. What I want people to gain from my topic is a better understanding of Mexico’s culture, environment, geography, and history. This information will allow future travelers to learn more about the country before visiting it. The topic is essential for educating travelers because when most people hear about Mexico, they typically think about Cancun and the beautiful beaches. My goal is to educate and almost guide people into seeing more of what exists in this country besides their beaches. There is a lot to see in Mexico. For example, the historical pyramids built by ancient indigenous groups have a meaning and background. Some of the customs and traditions these indigenous groups practiced are still used by people in Mexico. There are still many other things that make up the beauty of this country. This includes museums. art galleries, famous landmarks, and traditional restaurants. My intention is also to get people out of their comfort zone and get them to travel and learn more about the world. Being used to your surroundings restricts you from discovering new things and learning something new. I want to make people curious about the world and do their research before going to another country. Learning about culture and history says a lot about how individuals behave and will make people’s traveling experience more interesting. The genre I chose for my topic was an informational video where I discuss Mexico’s culture and add pictures to give the audience a view of what Mexico is all about. I will also discuss the differences between the United States and Mexico. In both countries, certain holidays are celebrated differently. People also behave differently and this usually because of culture. A video is the best way to get travelers attention because if I personally wanted to learn more about a country, I would want to a visual representation. Videos will point out the things you should do or what places you should visit while visiting the country. Something I could have done differently was created a blog post about my discoveries in places I explored. In this case, I would talk about the things I’ve done in Mexico. If I was to write a blog post I would try to convince others to check out similar things I did during my visit. Recommendations are also useful for travelers. As I mentioned before, people enjoy visual work. This is why I decided to create a video instead.
Reviewers Memo: I intend to make people’s traveling experience more interesting by teaching them something new about Mexico. I want people to be willing to take my information as well as doing research of their own before visiting Mexico. So far, I am feeling good about my project. I have made progress. I am not really having any problems yet. My sources are working well since my topic is based on traveling. I am trying to add more sources I used in my writing and incorporate it into my video. I will then add a brief description under the source (ex: a photo) along with a voice-over of me explaining everything. I am proud of the progress I made and the layout of the video. In the video, I will start by creating an idea for the audience. This is where curiosity comes in. Asking questions like what would it be like to travel? Why do we travel? What do we want to see when we travel?… These questions will start as the introduction. Then, I will get two different countries and discuss their differences. As well as what we should keep in mind when visiting. People, culture, and geography will be discussed as well.
