James Baldwin is saying that it’s okay to question, step out of your bubble and find something new. You should never settle for what you know, go out and explore. The world is full of events, nature, and many other things that people donât know about. He states that âthe world is largerâ meaning that there’s more people, things and places that are being discovered every day. We as people sometimes donât know about these things because we stick to what the books or people tell us and never ask or question to see if thereâs anything weâre missing out on. In the education system we grow on learning the four basics: math, english, science and history but, as you get older you see that in life you need more than those lessons and also, you see that the information taught is limited. For example history, as a New York student you are obligated to learn the history of America and maybe take one or two courses in world history. Why didnât I have the chance to learn about the caribbean history? It wasnât until I had to start paying for classes to learn about that. Thereâs more to history than just George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Albert Einstein yet the education curriculum wouldnât tell you that. This grows questions making students hungry to know more. Knowing how to add, subtract and find the value of x is great but, why isnât there a class in some schools on money management or finance? When kids get older theyâll need to start paying bills and knowing the difference between needs and wants and it sucks that the education system failed them on that skill. What I believe Mr.Baldwin is trying to say is that the real questions that need answers arenât what is asked in the classroom but, is what is in students mind that theyâre holding back to ask.Â
