Project 3 – Selfiemotion – Step 3 – Collage

The selfiemotion I selected was surprised. When I first began creating a sketches that would represent the emotion, I really wanted to find magazine images that I would be able to cut out into spirals and use with other cut outs of the mouth for my focal point. After given some feedback I realized that the mouth (see first collage) wasn’t really highlighting the emotion I chose and I went back to the drawing board. I kept the extra locks of hair going out in different directions for my next collage because I felt it showed a motion, but now after having researched “surprised faces” on the internet, I searched for wide-opened eyes in my magazines. I stuck with the idea of having an open eyes to show the emotion for the next couple of sketches but decided to get rid of the magazine image and use my own black and white photos.

The mood chosen is surprise. My first collage seemed like happiness not a surprise. While all we discuss about each of collage, some said happiness, and other said surprise. The professor said, “ what is supposed to be in your eye and mouths when surprised?”

That gave me the direction for the next step for improving my works. For expressing the feeling of surprise, I started to crop and used magazine to show that feeling.

When we talked about each other work, that made me do further lovely work. I was not satisfied with my work at some points, but I was glad to see developing my thoughts to the collage.

The mood I went for was angry! I’m a very edgy and assertive person with an aggressive side to me, so I thought going for angry would be the option I could work and do best with.

My focal point would be the angry mouth! I tried to achieve this by creating a gradient on an elongated neck (you’ll see this in my final piece) which forces viewers to look in the direction of the mouth.

The backstory to this is pretty simple. Me and my friends went out, bill came out to one thousand, and I was left to pay it. Because of this, I’m furious and have to say! This image requires alt text, but the alt text is currently blank. Either add alt text or mark the image as decorative.

The Selfiemotion project was fun to do. As you can notice, my first collage was plain and easy. when I showed it to my professor she said:” Chop, chop yourself.”
I was like what? more than this! She answered: yes, and that was all. I started cutting and playing with the pieces to show my emotion. I think I worked hard to get the final one that I will show in the final step: delivery.
I enjoyed the process and the discoveries made while trying to deliver.
What I learned from the ‘Selfiemotion Project” that with a grayscale value you can create a mood by focusing in a specific point that shows that mood, and using different values of grayscale you can direct the viewer’s eye.
In my project, using the grayscale helped me to express the movement of the chosen mood, and to emphasis the point that shows that mood. In this case, it was the eyes and the head.
However, I wasn’t fully satisfied with the result, so I kept brainstorming; that’s the final result that I will put in the next step.
